In his lifetime, he has received 20 Grammy nominations and has won 10 Grammy awards. George Benson is known for playing his Ibanez guitar and his method of playing, which uses a rest-stroke picking technique, is similar to players of gypsy jazz. His style of playing, tone and melody is incredible. He worked with many of the jazz greats, from Wes Montgomery, Jack McDuff, Miles David, Count Basie Orchestra, Lonnie Smith and Ronnie Cuber. He performed at top places all over the world, and packed them all. His audiences were rich and poor, made up of all races, all religions and all nationalities. In fact, many of them had just one factor in common – they all loved him. George Benson is truly one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time. George Benson was born on March 22, 1943, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was raised in Pittsburgh’s Hill District, the eldest son of a family of six children. His mother was an aid at the nearby hospital and the family was very poor. George lived in a house without electricity until he was seven. The Hill District of Pittsburg was filled with jazz talent at the time. There were numerous jazz clubs all over the city and little George was surrounded by the sound. The song “Successful” in the album So Far Gone and Ready sticks out as one of my favorite songs record by Drake. He pushes past the dilemmas in his life and all the dislike everybody throws at him but still does what he wants to do. Compared to other rappers, Drake has by far the most meaning in every song he produces. Drake has a music style that isn’t like any other; most of his lyricism is in regard to being rich and famous and also past relationships with strippers. “Drake's sound is labeled as "soft" for his genuine, forgiving lyrics and expressive melody.” (Lester). What is another thing that sets him apart from the rest is he has a wide vocabulary in his rhymes that he produces; you can tell that he is very high educated. Harvard Square, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is no different. Centrally located within Harvard University, it is evident the Square mimics the university’s attractive Georgian architecture. Other influential characteristics can be seen in the Square’s efforts for preservation, like Out of Town News, which gives the Square its own local character. These architectural qualities influence visitors’ behaviors to use the space to their own benefit through the use of impulse buying, triangulation, and different seating arrangements. Harvard Square not only provides a historic place for individuals to shop, dine and congregate, but also an opportunity to find their own center in a large, impersonal city. Is it possible that a certain color of brick or position of wall can manipulate a person’s behavior? As strange as it sounds, this influence can be seen in an area situated in the middle of an Ivy League campus that contains several clothing stores, a large underground train station, and restaurants. ...Mara Barron Introduction The first time I watched HBO’s Game of Thrones I was enthralled, but scared. My parents were wholly unaware of me because I would sit halfway down the stairwell to look at my grandmother’s faded painting. The painting was so lightly colored, that I could watch the TV through its reflection. So, I would sit there and watched as dead zombie-like bodies tried to rip the living to shreds, a platinum-blonde-haired woman burn her enemies alive, and seemingly everyone else get butchered. I loved watching Game of Thrones even though I found its violence, nudity, and coarse language terrifying. I kept watching the show until I was caught watching the episode, “The Red Wedding.” That night, my mother was going to my room to tuck me in for the night, but instead found me clutching the stairwell railing. I was immersed in the violence massacre scene when I felt her presences and quickly fled the scene. She came into my room and told me sternly, “that show is too “adult” for you,” and kissed me good night. But as I lay there, I couldn’t help but want to know more. Now, I am an adult and I want to revisit the episode. Game of Thrones came out in 2011, has five seasons, been nominated for multiple Emmy awards and won, and its sixth season will be released sometime in 2016 due the massive amount of fan requests. It is set on a remote island, where Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan, plots to restore his daughter Miranda to her rightful place using illusion and skilful manipulation. He conjures up a storm, the eponymous tempest, to lure his usurping brother Antonio and the complicit King Alonso of Naples to the island. There, his machinations bring about the revelation of Antonio's lowly nature, the redemption of the King, and the marriage of Miranda to Alonso's son, Ferdinand. ...Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809, in Boston. After being orphaned at age two, he was taken into the home of a childless couple–John Allan, a successful businessman in Richmond, Va., and his wife. Allan was believed to be Poe’s godfather. At age six, Poe went to England with the Allans and was enrolled in schools there. After he returned with the Allans to the U.S. in 1820, he studied at private schools, then attended the University of Virginia and the U.S. Military Academy, but did not complete studies at either school. After beginning his literary career as a poet and prose writer, he married his young cousin, Virginia Clemm. He worked for several magazines and joined the staff of the New York Mirror newspaper in 1844. All the while, he was battling a drinking problem. After the Mirror published his poem “The Raven” in January 1845, Poe achieved national and international fame. Besides pioneering the development of the short story, Poe invented the format for the detective story as we know it today. He also was an outstanding literary critic. Despite the acclaim he received, he was never really happy because of his drinking and because of the deaths of several people close to him, including his wife in 1847. He frequently had trouble paying his debts. It is believed that heavy drinking was a contributing cause of his death in Baltimore on October 7, 1849.
