Sonya Carson

Growing up in and out of foster homes, the world was not always kind to Ms. Carson. She had only achieved a third-grade education, and was married by the age of 13. After birthing her two sons, Benjamin and Curtis, Sonya had observed that her, once loyal and dedicated husband, was no longer the man she once knew. Collecting all her courage, she took her two sons, and moved away from the life she knew in Detroit to be with her sister in Boston. As a single mother, raising two boys, and working numerous jobs, Sonya had two choices; she could struggle, stress, and wonder how she was going to survive the next week, or she could ‘learn to do her best, and let God do the rest’. This became known as the phase that resembles the personality of Sonya Carson. She was not always dealt the best hand in life, but she always has a positive outlook on the future. Believing that if she tried her hardest to achieve what she could, God would lead her into success. She instilled this optimistic lifestyle on her two sons. She was determined that Curtis and Benjamin would have a better life than she did, but she also knew that they would have to work hard for it.
Sonya raised her sons in a strict manner, only allowing two television programs each week. In addition, they were assigned to read two books from the library each week and submit a report to her on those books. They didn’t know until they were older, that their mother only had a reading level of a third-grader. She most likely couldn’t even read some of their reports that she had requested. The purpose of these tasks were to teach her sons to work hard and strive for success. She full-heartedly believed that if you did these things, God would lead you to your destiny.
With these powerful words, morals, beliefs and lifestyle, her youngest son Ben became known as one of the world’s greatest Pediatric Neurosurgeon’s. He worked hard to earn good grades and received a scholarship to Yale. Dr. Benjamin Carson is now working as the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at John’s Hopkins Children’s Center. Not only has he saved the lives of numerous children with his talent and skill, but he was also the first surgeon to successfully separate Siamese twins in 1987. He has received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest award for a civilian, and has made remarkable success with his charitable work as well. He is a best-selling author and motivational speaker and still preaches his mother’s motto: “Learn to do your best, let God do the rest”.
There is no doubt that Dr. Benjamin Carson got his motivational outlook on life from his mother. He now works with underprivileged children in low-income community to give them hope that their lives can be as successful as they wish. Sonya Carson is a true inspiration to the world and her son, Benjamin, is carrying out her message to the world.
