Extra Credit Solutions Assignment To briefly summarize my actual solutions assignment: I love stand-up comedy and movies. I actual perform stand-up comedy on occasion and I am a huge movie buff. I have always seen racist and sexist acts and jokes but never really thought of the impact on society they had. Sure, from a stand-up perspective, I thought that people just realized it was a joke and somewhat true. In movies I thought that most people realized that it was just a movie and a movie is scripted and staged. I now know, that as stupid as those jokes and scenes can be, they actually contribute to a large portion of the social inequality that occurs every day all over the world. So my main goal over all of my journal entries was to do as much as I can to not watch any movies or stand-up comics that played on the idea of racism or stereotypes. It was honestly easier than I expected to do. I have not watched any movies that play on these stereotypes. I was having a movie night with friends. They wanted to watch the movie “12 Years a Slave.” It won a few Academy Awards. I suggested that we shouldn’t watch it because it plays on the typical stereotypes that white men have the most control in society white black people usually take the role of some sort of domestic work I movies. They then asked me, quoting here, “Joe, you love movies. This is a great movie. Who cares what the subject matter is. Why are you telling us this?” I then went on to say that I had to do a paper about what I do that contributes to social inequality in this world. I then went on to describe what I do that contributes to the social inequality. I contribute by watching and indulging in movies and stand-up comedy that involves the portrayal of racial stereotypes and by watching them, I pass on the message that it is okay to accept stereotypes and racism. Of course I described it more in depth, pretty much just went over my solutions assignment paper with them. I was pleasantly surprised. My friends and I, even though we aren’t political science majors, we are well versed in politics and keep up to date with the world and the news going on within it. They never really looked at movies and TV like that. They never thought that when they recommend a movie that plays on racial stereotypes, they are passing on the message “here, watch this movie that shows you why people are different based on how we think the whole race acts as compared to a very small population of that race that upholds those stereotypes.” Actual quote from one of my friends. My friends that were there at the time were 3 white males, 4 white females, and 2 black males. It was ehhhh decently diverse I guess. Once I told them why I didn’t want to watch the movie, they thought of their own things they do that promotes social inequality. It was hard to come up with at first but everyone pretty much had the same mindset that I had. Some also said that they believe most of the stereotypes as well which kind of took me by surprise but then they said that they thought it was normal, everyday knowledge that these people have these tendencies and those people have those tendencies. What I said led to a great conversation about racism, sexism and inequality in general. I didn’t expect that to happen. It made me feel really good. Like I made a little bit of a difference. Doing this was a bit harder than I thought. A lot of the movies I watch have some sort of stereotype. So it was hard judging what movies can and can’t I watch. So I based it on how prevalent it was in the movie. Basically, if the whole movie was built around a stereotype of a certain people, I wouldn’t watch it. If the stereotype I believe was not intended or was a very, very small portion of the movie, I would still watch it. You can really tell by the movie posters and titles themselves if you can watch it or not. On December third something awesome happened. There was a stand-up comic call the Zoltan that came to perform at Albright. He was really funny. He had relatable jokes that resonated with college kids. He had great stage presence. He said something about following him on twitter. He said he posts more jokes and funny things on there. So I looked him up and the first tweet I saw was as follows, “Anytime I see a black persons Instagram on private, I just assume they have a bunch of pics of them smoking dank pot.” Another, “On a plane. Two guys behind me don’t speak English but the one guy just said “snorting cocaine” in English. I hope this plane doesn’t go down lol.” After I read those I just walked out. Little did I know my friend, who I talked to about the movies, was at the show with his girlfriend. I asked him “why did you leave?” and he said “I saw his tweets and realized he is just a racist that happens to be funny. Rarely people call someone out for being a funny comedian that plays of stereotypes and racism.” I never really thought about it like that but it is true. If you are an outright racist, people don’t like you. If you hide your racism as comedy, people think it is just that, COMEDY! When something is funny, people rarely question it because it makes people feel good. It makes them laugh. Some people might not realize they are laughing at racist material because it makes them laugh. So it was just nice knowing that what I said stuck to someone I know and they may have passed on the message to their girlfriend, who I didn’t know. Now as I type this, they may very well be saying the same things to their friends or family. That’s a great feeling! I wish I had more for this paper but I didn’t speak out against anything I front of a crowd or picket a movie theater. I can’t just scream at my TV and expect anything to happen. I just casually passed along the message to my friends and the message seemed to have stuck. The message also seems to be getting passed around very slowly with my friends other friends.
