Modern humans have lived in the region for over 100 000 years. The latest discovery is a new species of hominid, Australopithecus sediba, almost two million years old. It was discovered in the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, 40 kilometres from Johannesburg, South Africa in 2010. The small, mobile bands of Stone-Age hunter- gatherers, who created a wealth of rock art, were the ancestors of the Khoikhoi and San of historical times. The Khoikhoin and San (the "Hottentots" and "Bushmen" of early European terminology), although collectively known as the Khoisan, are often thought of as distinct peoples. The former were those who, some 2 000 years ago, adopted a pastoralist lifestyle herding sheep and, later, cattle. Whereas the hunter-gatherers adapted to local environments and were scattered across the subcontinent, the herders sought out...

...South Africa is the continent’s second-largest economy and comprises of more than 50 million consumers, a health and quality-conscious middle class, a fairly stable political climate and a sound, effective financial system (South Africa.info 2013). This positive environment seems to provide a solid foundation for Britannia Industries to expand its biscuit segment. However, it is important to conduct a more thorough and accurate analysis in order to have a better comprehension of the possible issues, opportunities and challenges that may occur upon entering the market. 3.3.1 The economic environment Since the 2008 global financial crisis, the South African economy has demonstrated uneven growth, with an average increase of above 2%. This is largely due to the effect of the global economy in addition to the country’s strong ties to advanced economies (Statistics South Africa n.a.). According to Schwab et al. (2013), South Africa was ranked as the 53rd most competitive country worldwide, overtaking Brazil to take second place among BRICS-countries. Regardless of some soft macro- economic indicators such as an extremely high unemployment rate (25.4%) and rising inflation (5.9%) (Trading Economics 2014), direct foreign investments (FDI) continue to flow into the county. As shown in Figure 1, South Africa is ranked as the 13thmost attractive FDI destination globally, coming ahead of Switzerland, Spain and Italy. This positive rating is a result of numerous successful large merger...

...South Africa Strayer University SOC 300: Sociology of Developing Countries Professor T. Taylor August 31, 2015 South Africa South Africa is located at the southern tip of Africa. It is made up of a unique demographic, and is approximately twice the size of Texas (Cia.gov, 2015). The death rate in South Africa is the highest of any country (Cia.gov, 2015). AIDS is very prevalent, with South Africa having the fourth highest rate of any country in the world (Cia.gov, 2015). Economic growth is slow, and unemployment is around 25% (Cia.gov, 2015). While the economy of South Africa is experiencing slow growth, they still use the benefits of funding from banking institutions. It is important to understand whether funding from these banking institutions, as well as the general health of the population, affects the economy and politics of the country of South Africa. The World Bank and IMF have the potential to positively impact the economy in South Africa. According to Olawale and Garwe (2010), it is essential that more small and medium enterprises (SME’s) are started in South Africa. They posit this idea due to the high unemployment rate plaguing South Africa. While the World Bank is in full support of more SME’s being opened in South Africa, South Africans fear corruption will prevent them from beginning new SME’s. On the other hand, one could draw the conclusion that loans from the World Bank and IMF are allowing the corrupt South African government to continue thriving...

...South Africa is one of the most geographically varied countries of the African continent, comprising territory that ranges from the rolling, fertile plains of the highveld and the wide open savanna of the Eastern Transvaal to the Kalahari desert and the peaks of the Drakensberg Mountains. While all of its diverse regions offer ample opportunities for adventure travel, the focus in South Africa--as in much of sub-Saharan Africa--is the safari. In addition to possessing two of the world's most renowned wildlife reserves, the Kruger and the Kalahari Gemsbok National Parks, the country contains over a dozen smaller regional parks and reserves. In addition, with its excellent road and rail systems, its abundance of top-rated accommodations, and its bountiful farmlands and vineyards, South Africa allows visitors ample opportunity for more luxurious comfort along with adventuresome excitement. Location, Geography, & Climate South Africa is located, as one might expect, on the southern tip of Africa. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the west, the Indian Ocean on the south and east. Along its northern border, from west to east, lie Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe, and to the northeast are Mozambique and Swaziland. Wholly-enclosed by South Africa, and situated in its eastern central plain, is the independent kingdom of Lesotho. Almost all of South Africa's 472,000 square miles (1.2 million sq. km.) lie below the Tropic of Capricorn, and the country is geographically composed...

...South Africa South African landscapes provide us with the lush greens of the jungle, the dry grass of the savanna, the majesty of the mountains, the eroded clay of the desert and the high-rise mortar of the city. A filmmaker can find there any background desired as the scenery for his motion picture, but variety is not the only true value of the African landscape. Here we find the lush, well tended greens that represent the wealth and control of the Europeans who have invaded the country; the dry savannas where the animals roam freely, but the native peoples are restricted; the eroded clay that somehow manages to sustain life and reminds us of the outlying township slums that somehow sustain oppressed lives; and the stifling city where a restrictive government and looming skyscrapers bear down to oppress the human spirit. According to Hugo Munsterberg, "the photoplay tells us the human story by overcoming the forms of the outer world, namely, space, time and causality, and by adjusting the events to the forms of the inner world, namely attention, memory, imagination, and emotion" (104). The South African landscape reflects its country’s history and the struggle of its people, and when a director chooses it carefully for background in his film, it can add emotional and symbolic depth to his message. In 1652, the Dutch East India Company came from Europe to South African soil to set up a fort for the purpose of replenishing their ships with supplies. The Europeans, in their...

...South Africa, alone of all the British colonies did not follow the political course of embracing democracy and freedom. Even though the geographic area called South Africa had a large British presence, the country was required to follow legislation given in the agreement of the surrender in 1806 from the Dutch. Those terms meant that the country was allowed to diverge from English law and replace it with South African law. The country at that time was not plagued with inequality, layers of a class system, prejudice or discrimination and the building of a new society was the idea on everyone’s minds. This ideal was not to be attained. In 1948 the National Party, led the first campaign that was openly racist.  The National Party won 80 seats (mainly from Afrikaner voters), compared to the United Party’s 64 seats.       Following the elections, legal or enforced apartheid or racial segregation officially began in 1948. It was not a new idea, but had been prevalent under the Dutch in colonial times. Legislation followed which separated the population into four racial groups (eventually changing in 1950 to three) with different rules for each. Suddenly racial discrimination was institutionalized (The History of Apartheid in South Africa, 1978). Residential areas, education, medical care, and other public services were separated. It is sad to say that the services were widely disparate in comparison to the services to white people which were vastly superior to the services to the non-white...

...South Africa - A Brief Overiew South Africa’s subtropical location, moderated by ocean on three sides of the country and the altitude of the interior plateau, makes South Africa a warm and sunny country. The country consists of nine provinces. Guateng province centred on Johnnesburg is the economic heart of South Africa and the largest inland city in the world not situated on a river. It is a multiparty democratic republic, home to 53m people (South African government 2013). Nobel prize winner Desmond Tutu called it the Rainbow Nation, because of its ethnic diversity (79.8% black, 8.9% white, 8.9% coloured, 2% Indian, 0.4% other e.g. Chinese, Malay). Diversity is a key feature of South Africa, where 11 languages are recognised as official, although English is the main language of government and business. The country was home to San bushmen, but in the 17th century Dutch and French Huguenot (Afrikaner) colonists settled in the Cape, whilst further east Zulus were migrating down from what is now Zimbabwe. British settlers started arriving in the 19th century; however the discovery of gold in the 1880s led to mass immigration. This created tensions between the Afrikaners and British culminating in the Boer war (1899-1902). Britain despite being victorious agreed to self rule in 1910, albeit only for European. Afrikaners came to monopolise government, whilst the British dominated the commercial world. Successive governments from 1948 operated an increasingly racist system (apartheid)...

...South Africa is a country located at the southern tip of Africa known for its abundance of natural resources such as rich minerals, gold, coal, diamonds, and platinum. Both the English and Dutch colonized the country in the seventeenth century. English domination of the Dutch descendents, known as Boers or Afrikaners resulted in the Dutch establishing new colonies of the Orange Free State and Transvaal. Around the 1900s an English invasion broke out which lead to the start of the Boer War all due to the discovery of diamonds. Independence from England caused an uncomfortable power-sharing between the two groups until the 1940’s when the Afrikaner National Party was able to gain a strong majority. It was at this time the Apartheid system was created by the National Party (Omatseye, p. 142 & 144). The Apartheid was a system of government that started in 1948 and ended in 1994. This system separated groups according to their race classification. Legislation classified inhabitants into four racial groups, White, Black, Indian and Colored. The government also segregated medical care, beaches, and other public services, and provided black people with services inferior to those of white people. 2 The main issue of segregation was education, which lead to the Bantu Education Act in 1953 (Krabacher, p. 186). “Bantu education was intended to maintain white supremacy, provide a permanent source of semiskilled but cheap labor, and arrest the detribalization of blacks, especially...
