Southwest 2008 Southwest has had major success in the U.S airline business; they have continued to show profit even when the entire industry is on a down turn. They still have a few problems that need to be solved. * In 2008 Southwest has had problems with the safety of the their jets. One way Southwest keeps their prices low is by having their jets be constantly in the air and tries to minimize the time jets are loaded unloaded etc. Southwest knowingly failed to conduct inspection on 46 of their planes fuselage systems and instead continued to have these planes fly. Their decisions to have the planes continue to fly cost them 10.2 million in fines. * Since 1971 Southwest has implemented a no- layoff policy and has tried to buyout employees who receive a higher pay scale. In 2007 Southwest tried reduce labor costs by buying out 8,700 employees but only 1,000 employees took the buyout, leading to a only a small decline in labor cost.

Southwest can solve their safety issues by * Following all safety inspection on time. Southwest will lose profit by having their planes sit idle while they are inspected, but this is something that must be done because of how much it effects customer’s opinion of the company. They money Southwest will lose in the short-run due to regular inspections, is nothing compared to the money they will lose in the long run if customers believe flying Southwest is dangerous.
Lastly, not laying off employees is great for company moral but * Southwest cant let its labor cost continue to rise and allow companies compete with Southwest’s prices. Problems will only continue to compound in the future as their company continues to gain more and more employees. A company the size of Southwest needs to cut the excess labor they have to make themselves more efficient. There last buyout offer hardly attracted any employees, so its proven that this buyout technique will need to offer even more money to employees to work, so laying off employees will be most efficient.

Southwest's company model changed the rules for the air carrier industry and soon after new air carriers were created based on Southwest’s model.
