...Population Ecology of Some Warblers of Northeastern Coniferous Forests (ROBERT H MACARTHUR) 1. What journal was the article published in? This article was published October 1958 in The Ecological Society of America 2. Find five terms that you do not know the meaning of in the paper. DEFINE these terms Non parametric statistics: is defined to be a function on a sample that has no dependency on a parameter, and whose interpretation does not depend on the population fitting any parametrized distributions. Statistics based on the ranks of observations are one example of such statistics and these play a central role in many non-parametric approaches. Stippled Area: is the creation of a pattern simulating varying degrees of solidity or shading by using small dots. Such a pattern may occur in nature and these effects are frequently emulated by artists. The term stipple can also apply to a random pattern of small depressions applied to a surface to increase the friction and make the surface easier to grip. Hawking: is a feeding strategy in birds which involves catching flying insects in the air. The term usually refers to a technique of sallying out from a perch to snatch an insect and then returning to the same or a different perch. This technique is called “fly catching” and some birds known for it are several families of “flycatchers”, for example Old World flycatchers, Monarch flycatchers, and Tyrant flycatchers. Allopatric: Occurring in separate, non-overlapping geographic...

...Acupuncture research in Cerebrovascular Accident induced hemiplegia. By Introduction to Cerebrovascular Accident and Hemiplegia Cerebrovascular Accident also known as stroke can broadly be described as an interruption of the blood supply to the brain. Without blood the brain cells are staved of oxygen, and can begin to die within minutes if the blood supply is completely cut off. It is this cellular death which has the greatest influence on the sequelae or after math of the stroke. Hemiplegia is the most common sequelae of stroke, this medical condition characterised by paralyses of one side of the body. It is similar to, but should not be confused with hemiparesis which is when one side of the body is weak but still mobile. While the leading cause of hemiplegia is a Cerebrovascular Accident, it is not the only cause, other neural conditions such as a unilateral pyramidal (UMN) lesion may also cause hemiplegia. It is difficult to discuss Hemiplegia without also discussing Stroke, similar to cause and effect, if stroke is the cause then hemiplegia is effect. A sudden stroke can be deadly, and how well someone recovers or if they recover depends largely on how fast they receive treatment. In Australia the most popular method for identifying stroke is the FAST test: * Face – Check their face. Has their mouth dropped? * Arms – Can they lift both arms? * Speech – Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you? * Time – Time is critical. If you see any of these...

...electricity could move through air. In 1819, Danish physicist Hans Christian Oersted noted that a compass needle moved in the presence of an electrical field. Michael Faraday demonstrated the first electromagnetic induction and built the first direct current generator in 1831. In 1865 and again in 1873, famed Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell published multiple papers regarding electromagnetics. Alexander Graham Bell and Charles Sumner Tainter invented the photophone in 1880. The photophone was a telephone that conducted audio conversations wirelessly over modulated light beams, which required a direct line of sight. In 1885 Thomas Edison used a vibrator magnet for induction transmission. In 1891 he filed a wireless patent for the signal system and method using inductance he applied to the Lehigh Valley Railroad system he established in 1888. In the meantime, Henrich Hertz demonstrated the existence of electromagnetic waves with an oscillator. Then came what is perhaps the most debated topic in wireless history, the invention of the radio. WiFi has easily been one of the most useful technologies of the past decade so many of our daily tasks and the devices we use rely on it, and it’s on the verge of getting a whole lot better. First, it's not as new as it might sound. This is not a new idea or proposal it’s about the availability and use of white space for unlicensed devices in the TV bands as part of the FCC’s incentive auction process. The promise of the...

...Bulacan State University College of Architecture and Fine Arts Malolos, Bulacan. THESIS PROPOSAL Kamayan sa Villiares (food and restaurant) In Particular Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts Major in Visual Communication Submitted by: By: Regienald S.D Bairan CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Advertising is how a company encourages people to buy their products, services or ideas. An advertisement or Ad is anything that draws good attention towards these things. It is usually designed by an identified sponsor, and performed through a variety of media. The critical part of making an advertising campaign is determining a campaign theme as it sets the tone for the individual advertisements and other forms of marketing communications that will be used. The campaign theme is the central message that will be communicated in the promotional activities. The campaign themes are usually developed with the intention of being used for a substantial period but many of them are short lived due to factors such as being ineffective or market conditions and/or competition in the marketplace and marketing mix. RESTAURANT Is a business which prepares and serves food and drink to customers in return for money, either paid before the meal, after the meal, or with a running tab. Meals are generally served and eaten on premises, but many restaurants also offer take-out and food delivery services. Restaurants vary greatly in appearance and offerings, including a...

...Yoga 1 Final Project Theme: The theme of your final project should be personal and unique to you and a topic that has been of continuing interest to you this semester. For example, if you noticed your hamstrings were tight, you’ve been interested in lengthening them this semester, and have found several poses we’ve practiced particularly helpful in stretching them, then “Hamstrings” might be a theme for your project. Other examples are: Hips (be specific on what area, are you stretching or strengthening), Abdominal Strength, Feeling Grounded, Finding More Breath Space, Releasing Tension in the Back, Ahimsa (non-violence- body and mind), Waking Up or Preparing For Sleep. These are just examples to get you thinking as there are countless possibilities! Vinyasa Sequence: Vinyasa is translated as “moving with the breath” and “put together in a thoughtful way”. You will do both as you design a sequence of poses from your theme. The majority of your sequence is the Sun Salutation (or I’ve referred to this sequence also as “step backs”) that you are already familiar with. You will add three poses specifically related to your theme into the Sun Salutation to complete your sequence. Place your three theme poses into the sequence in a “thoughtful way” so that the entire sequence flows together smoothly with the breath. Practicing your sequence will greatly help in making sure your poses connect together well and feels fluid! Theme Poses: These are the poses you will add to the...

...step in making an investigatory project is selecting a topic to research on. If you are making an investigatory project in Chemistry, you may select the topic about a new substance in making soaps. | Using fruits as batteries - an example of an investigatory project. Photo by Flickr user hans. | After selecting the topic, narrow down your research into something that you are interested in. For example, you might be interested in using different plants in making soaps. Papaya has been proven to make skin look younger. Find something that interests you. 2. Make a Research Question and Title Now that you have your topic, you should now create your Research Question. Your research question is something that you want to test. Something that intrigues you and you want to find out the correct answer. A sample research question might be, "Can I make an antibacterial soap using guava leaves?". If this is your question, then the title for your Investigatory Project is Using Guava Leaves in Making an Antibacterial Soap. Explore other questions that also interest you. Remember that you must make a scientific inquiry. That means the question or topic can be answered objectively and not through opinions only. 3. Design the Experiments and Procedures Now that you want to find out if guava leaves can be made into an antibacterial soap, you have to design experiments so that you can answer your research question. One experiment might be making soap and adding guava...

...Albert Einstein was born on March 14, 1879 to Hermann and Pauline Einstein a scientifically minded family, who were non-practicing Jews in Ulm, Wurttemberg Germany. As a child, he was very curious, and lively. Albert attended a Catholic elementary school, and his mother insisted for him to take violin lessons. Although he detested the lessons, and later on decide not to continue with them, he would later on find an appreciation and great comfort in Mozart’s violin sonatas. At the early age of five, Albert was fascinated by complex scientific and mathematical concepts at a very early age. Hermann Einstein shows his son a pocket compass, and Einstein with his sense of wonder, and curiosity realizes that something in “empty” space controlled the needle; he later on describes the experience as a revelation of his life. Albert Einsteins hobbies was to build models and mechanical devices for his amusement although he showed mathematical intelligence early on, Albert’s parents thought he suffered from a slow learning disability, perhaps from dyslexia, or possibly shyness, or Asperser’s syndrome. Six weeks later the Einsteins moved to Munich, and later on moved to Milan, Italy, they made the decision of leaving Albert behind to attend his high school in Munich (Belanger, 2006). Albert Einstein was not smart in...

...Learning Experience Paper Tiffany N. Moore Psy/103 February 22, 2016 Joseph Foster Learning Experience Paper How can anyone be afraid of an insect that is smaller than them? My fear of spiders started when I was seven years old. Every year during summer break I would go out to the country to visit my godparents on their farm. I was always told not to play outdoors in my bare feet because of the insects, snakes, and small rodents. Being an adventurous child I did the total opposite of what I was being told. While playing in the barn one summer day I decided to take my shoes off, which led to me getting bit by a spider, becoming terribly ill, and having to spend several days in the hospital. Every day since that incident occurred I have had a deadly fear of spiders. A phobia is a type of anxiety disorder where you have an excessive fear of a certain object or situation, says Raphael Rose, PhD, associate director of the Anxiety Disorders Research Center and associate clinical professor at the University of California-Los Angeles' Department of Psychology and Psychiatry and Bio-behavioral Sciences. An estimated 19.2 million American adults’ deal with specific phobias, the National Institute of Mental Health reports. And specific phobias are twice as common in women as in men, NIMH says. Phobias usually develop during childhood or, if not then, by early adulthood, Rose says. Common specific phobias, according to NIMH, include closed-in spaces, heights, highway driving...

...Neuroprosthetics Research is aimed at developing technology that will place prosthetic limbs and organs under the control of the nervous system, enabling users to control these devices in the same way they control their natural limbs and organs. For military personnel who have lost limbs or organs, neuroprosthetics will offer more rapid recovery and rehabilitation. The center draws upon WPI faculty expertise in the life sciences and biomedical, electrical, and mechanical engineering, including such areas as electronic control systems, communications, imaging, sensors, biocompatibility, and biomaterials, as well as the university's growing capabilities in bioMEMS (Bio-Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems). Luke Skywalker’s Hand and How Touch is Like Vision Perhaps the most famous neuroprosthetic device in movie history shows up at the end of The Empire Strikes Back. In the final scene, Luke Skywalker is fitted for a new, robotic hand to replace the one so cruelly lopped off by (spoiler alert!) his father’s lightsaber. To test out the new hand, Luke first flexes it a couple of times, then allows a droid to poke it in several places with a thin needle. That latter part is actually an important test, verifying the sensory ability of the prosthetic to mimic a real hand’s response to pain or pressure. Last week, we wrote about BrainGate, a neuroprosthetic that allowed some quadriplegic subjects to control a robotic arm with their brain activity. But a successful prosthetic limb, whether...

...Epidemiology Paper Epidemiology has become the method of choice for public health research. The patterns and trends and cause and effects of health affecting phenomena identified by epidemiology are instrumental in predicting risk factors e.g.; development of treatment strategies to prevent or contain diseases. Epidemiology estimates have changed over time related to changes in the definition and diagnosis of diseases. Epidemiology is practiced as a broad scientific discipline that addresses occurrences of diseases and distribution of health status of populations. Integration of casual concepts at the clinical, social and environmental levels will allow faculty to work to maintain an intellectual environment that will facilitate the integration of biological, social and, analytical approaches of epidemiology. This type of environment allows faculty and students to develop the knowledge to fully appreciate the complexities of biosocial system to understand, modify, and use this information to maximum potential. The focus of this paper will be on immigrant/migrants as a vulnerable population with emphasis on infectious disease a major health concern. The paper will define epidemiology and identify steps and methods of the type of epidemiology and examines relationships of illnesses and education related to infectious diseases. Epidemiology defined Stanhope & Lancaster (2008) defines epidemiology as “the study of the distribution and determination of health- related states...

...2007:224 CIV M ASTER’S TH E SI S Study of the reactions between iron ore slag and refractories Julien Zimmermann MSc PrograMMeS in engineering Materials Technology (eeigM) Luleå University of Technology Department of Applied Physics and Mechanical Engineering Division of Material Mechanics 2007:224 CIV • ISSN: 1402 - 1617 • ISRN: LTU - EX - - 07/224 - - SE Summary: For the fabrication of iron ore pellets at LKAB (Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB), one of the methods used is to sinter the pellets in a rotary kiln. This Kiln has a drift temperature of 1250°C in average. During this process a coating, causing the wear of the refractories materials, is formed, inducing expensive maintenance periods. The aim of this work is to find the reaction that takes place between the Slag and the bricks, in order to find the parameters that have to be changed to improve the bricks lifetime in the kiln. The use of bricks with higher alumina content is one of the solutions, but it is expensive. The influence of Alkalis and especially Na2O has been studied before in inert atmosphere. In this work it will be studied in air as well as the influence of the alumina content of the brick. Experiments were performed in air atmosphere, using powder samples that have been compressed into pellets. The devices used to characterize the reaction and the product of the reaction were: Kanthal furnace, X-ray diffraction (XRD), dilatometer, differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry (DSC/TG)...
