...Reading Response I Tongue-Tied Throughout my reading I was not surprised to hear that children and adults alike develop feelings of anxiety when trying to express themselves in their nonnative language. I have felt this same way when trying to speak Spanish. As Kit Yuen Quan puts in in The Girl Who Wouldn’t Sing, “I get this overwhelming fear, this heart stopping panic that I won’t be able to do it… My body tenses up and I forget to breath if there is a word or sentence that I don’t know or several sentences in a paragraph containing unfamiliar words. My confidence dwindles and I start to feel the ground falling from under me… So I tune out or nod my head as if nothing is wrong” (13). This is much like what I feel in my Spanish classes, especially now that my professor speaks solely in Spanish. If I don’t understand a critical word, or a series of words, from his sentences I often become lost and tune out. When I am asked to answer a question or share my opinion I often become anxiety ridden and blank on whatever it is I would normally say. I think that I can attribute this partially to my high level of affect felt in class. I feel the need to perform well, and when I cannot do this I become nervous and/or frustrated. What I found surprising and heart breaking all at the same time was the level of shame that some of the authors speak of. As a child, or even adult, who moves into a new country and is expected to speak the native language, I think the hardest thing to deal...

...answer the question: What were key points noted? What was observed? What innovations/trends were observed?) *There were several things that I observed while helping parents fill out paperwork at registration. To begin with- there is so much paperwork! Since our registration was elementary, middle school and high school, there was a ton of papers, three different ‘stations’ and long wait times. *I have filled out paperwork for my kids, but BGM has streamlined their paperwork a bit. I believe there are three papers to fill out. STC had several papers, and each one of those papers had an English and a Spanish version. *It was reiterated that I need to learn Spanish to help some of the parents....

...order to become CompTIA A+ certified, you must pass two exams: the Essentials Exam (number 220-701) and the Practical Application exam (number 220-702). ← Number of questions: 100 for each exam ← The exams each consist of 100 questions and are known as "linear exams". This means that you can go backward or forward within the exam, mark items, and change answers if necessary. It differs from an "adaptive exam" in that it has more questions, and the exam does not adapt to previous answers that the examinee has given. ← Type of questions: Primarily multiple-choice ← The exams consist primarily of multiple-choice questions, but you might see an occasional matching question. CompTIA reserves the right to change the bank of questions, while still adhering to the objectives. The tests are administered on a computer within a very easy-to-use program. The majority of the time, you will simply click the letter of the corresponding correct answer. The exams can be taken in many languages including English, Spanish, German, and Japanese. The new exams (220-801 and 220-802) due out in October 2012 will include Performance Based Questions where the test taker will be asked to do a task in a simulated environment, but the 701/702 exams won’t have those types of questions added to their bank of questions. Also note that the 701/702 series of exams will be retired as of August 31, 2013, but between now and then you can choose to take either series of exams. ← Passing...

...active 5 years old girl who is in kindergarten. I observed her at her home in TX. Her primary language is English and her Secondary language is Spanish. She is able to do a lot of things for her age. I watched her in her home setting through the months of October and November. She is on track for her age developmentally. Her physical development is good for her age. When I visited her we did worksheets together. She traced a giraffe with a pen she was able to hold the pen in her hand and trace the dotted lines on the paper. We also did a cut color and glue paper of a clown holding balloons. She was able to cut out the circles and color then the colors asked. She also was able to match the shapes. She drew me a picture of herself and she wrote her name on the paper next to the drawing. We went outside to play and she showed me how she could skip and stand on one leg. She was also able to button her coat by herself. Her language skills are also on track. She is a very talkative 5 years old. On one of the visits we sat down to read one of her books. We read It looked like spilt milk. She was able to tell me what the story was about since she had read the book before. She is able to speak clear long sentence. ...I interviewed five people for this assignment. I found a variety of people to ask the “Who am I.” question too. I was surprised by the answers I received. The answers were exactly what the text had written. Person 1 answers to the questions indicated that she fall into the category of individualism. She is a seventeen-year-old. None of her answers were about family although she did say she was a good friend. I found this interesting. She had no problem saying that she was smart, funny, flirty, helpful, pretty, blond, good sense of style, and a good friend. She was the only one who did not mention family as part of who she was. Person 2 answers to the questions indicated that he fall into the both categories individualism and collectivism. He is a 55-year-old male; he had a hard time coming up with 10 things about himself. The most the egotistical thing he said was he was a good multitasker. His list included: a son, a dad, a store manager, a husband, a bike rider, a person who enjoys camping, a person who likes to be outside, a dog owner, and a good multitasker. I tried to get him to add...

...MGMT340 Petrie’s Electronic Case Questions Week 5 Question 1: Using the guidelines from this chapter and other sources, evaluate the usability of the page design depicted in PE Figure 8-1. Answer: Some of the words are in a different language, which is incorrect. If you want to have, different cultures able to use the page, have a setting that switches all content from English to Spanish, or whatever other languages needed. Page should not display information randomly in different languages. I like the click to act method they have. Overall, I believe the page has limited capabilities to help most users’ interactivity. Question 2: Chapter 8 encourages the design of a help system early in the design of the human interface. How would you incorporate help into the interface as shown in PE Figure 8-1? Answer: You need to think about what the user is likely to do if they do not know something when creating a help system. The help system needs to be simple as well as easy to access. Help messages should be short, to the point and easily understood. It can show the users how do to something. I would incorporate a help by explaining to guests how to look at their point’s record. That way if a user wants to know how he or she got the points the help system you design can show the most unknowledgeable computer person easy transition to the information they are looking for. Question 3: Describe how cookie crumbs could be used in this system. Are cookie crumbs...

She replied, “ I have to apply for disability because I do not make enough income from child support and social security benefits to take care of my 4 children. I am hoping disability approves so I maybe able to better support my children,” I then asked her if she could change anything what would it be? And she explained she wanted to take college seriously and get a better degree because she wouldn’t be where she is now, My fourth question, I decided to ask her something positive, and asked what she makes her happy.
