Spanking, is it ethical? Some may say spanking is an effective method of discipline. Others consider spanking a form of child abuse. The difference between hitting and spanking forms a thin line for some, for others, there’s a big difference. Hitting is an aggressive behavior intended to inflict harm and pain onto another person. While spanking is a disciplinary action intended to teach or correct one behavior. Spanking is used to teach appropriate behavior but is often interpreted by the child, that to avoid pain and hurt they should not do what is undesired by their parents, at least not in their view. Parents who support spanking as a form of discipline use arguments such as; Spanking is as effective way to manage behavior, I got hit when I was a child and I turned out fine, If you don’t spank children, they’ll become disrespectful to others, and the bible says, “Spare the rod and spoil the child”. A study shows the more the parent spanks the more likely the child is to hit others including peers, siblings and as adults they are more likely to hit their spouse. Hitting children teaches them that it’s ok to hit others to get what they want. The results of 88 corporal punishment research studies over six decades shows that corporal punishment suck as spanking was associated with negative outcomes including delinquent and antisocial behavior, increased risk of child abuse and spousal abuse, child and adult aggression and decreased mental health. Not being spanked shows that it would have helped children to turn out healthier. More than five countries have banned corporal punishment of children. Within those countries the interpersonal violence is much lower than that of the United States. Corproal punishment was banned in 1979 in Sweden. Critics of the ban predicted the youth of Sweden would grow up more unruly and disrepectful after parents stopped spanking. After 15 years of the ban Dr. Joan Durrant's studies reported that the youth of Sweden had not become unruly, under socialized or self-distructive but rather the youth showed substantial improvment in their well-being. Therefore non physical discipline is important in a childs behavior. Discipline means to teach, through explaining and reasoning, inforcing rules and concequences, praising good behavior and also being good role madel for the child.
