...genius” The author of Eat, Pray, Love gives an incredibly inspiring description of creativity by employing various kinds of storytelling techniques. In order to illustrate her point on creativity that instead of the rare person “being” a genius, all of us “have” a genius, she gives four short anecdotes in her speech: two of herself and two of others. She starts with the fact that her book Eat, Pray, Love has recently become so successful worldwide that people around her begin to treat her like she’s doomed. Then she brings out how uncomfortable she is with the assumption that creativity and suffering are somehow inherently linked and that artistry, in the end, will always ultimately lead to anguish. Therefore, Elizabeth points out the central question of her speech: how to create some sort of protective psychological construct to help the great minds live and to help herself continue writing. Next she talks about how ancient Greece and ancient Rome regarded creativity not as something born within certain human beings, but as some kind of elf who would come out and invisibly assist the artist with their work and would shape the outcome of that work. This is the Eureka moment for her seeking! Furthermore, to support her point, she gives 3 examples of how this thought can actually help improve the mental condition of writers during their creative process. Especially the one about the difficult situation she encountered when she was writing Eat, Pray, Love, and how she managed to overcome...

...When ‘Cesario’ goes to woo Olivia, the speech that ‘he’ makes highlights the ridiculousness of this kind of adoration. He begins with “"Most radiant, exquisite and unmatchable beauty"”, but is forced to a stop because he doesn’t even know if he is addressing the right person, because he “"never saw her"”. The irony emphasises the satire of the way in which men woo women his sincerity is reflected in a different relationship in Twelfth Night, that of Orsino and Viola. Although Orsino has not known that his ‘man’ Cesario is really a woman, the relationship they have is much more sincere and based on truth and friendship, which means that when he realises the truth of the situation he asks her to marry him. Both the love depicted in Sonnet 130 and the relationship of Orsino and Viola would surely have the approval of the narrator of Christina Walsh’s A Woman to Her Lover, who wants “"co-equal love"” based on truth, rather than any kind of idealisation that makes the woman into an “"angel"” or a “"doll"”. His real love and real interest is his own poetry, and the name he is making for himself. This (much more modern) poem rather reflects Orsino’s own character in Twelfth Night: he is more interested in listening to music and Feste’s sad songs than going to make Olivia marry him. Viola partly wins Olivia’s heart by saying what she would do if she were Orsino, the first thing being to come and make camp outside Olivia’s house. This speech draws the reaction from Olivia: “"you might...

...we click the mouse and a machine confirms our sense of mastery.” The social media is like a machine that creates an imaginary self-image of its users. In the essay “Linking Is For Cowards. Go For What Hurts” published by Times Magazine May 28, 2011, is the author, Jonathan Franzen, describing how the social media has influence on the youth of our modern society and furthermore how love is affected by the social media and how real love should be like. The title “Linking Is For Cowards. Go for what hurts” refers to the Facebook-function “like” which is basically just a command which is an expression for your interest in a status/picture etc. This function though, has a negative side-effect according to Jonathan Franzen, “But if you consider this in human terms, and you imagine a person defined by a desperation to be liked, what do you see? You see a person without integrity [..] You see a narcissist” by this quote, he tries to inform the audience about his attitude to the subject that the social media emerges narcissists. The subject is the social media and its effect on the society as well as the comparison of the facebook “likes” and real love. This is an ideal subject as approximately 95% of the audience, which are the College students of Kenyon College, uses a social media and most have experienced or will experience love in the future. The speech was given in 2010 but first published a year later, which might indicate that the discussion of the social media was further ahead...

...Good, True, and Beautiful as the most divine and perfect forms of goodness, truth, and beauty because they all seek to better one’s soul. Each of these elements can form a framework to distinguish the most just form of rhetoric. Defining justice as an action to better one’s soul, Socrates utilizes these characteristics to distinguish a just rhetorician from an unjust rhetorician. A rhetor’s motive determines whether the speech is pursuing the Good or if the rhetor prioritizes his own private interests. Applying this methodology to writings or speeches allows audiences to know when to trust the orator. For example, in Frederick Douglass’ speech, “What to The Slave is the Fourth of July,” Douglass...

...A Women’s Civil Right The speech ”A Women’s Civil Right” was written in 1969 and the feminist author Betty Friedan delivered it. Betty Friedan was a proponent of the modern women’s movement and claimed that women in 1969 and onwards should not be trapped in the stereotypical housewife role. Friedan was convinces that social barriers in the society kept women imprisoned in “the housewife trap”. She wanted women to have better career opportunities, introduce equality with men and to eliminate the illusion of “the happy housewife”. This specific speech announces that abortion should be a part of a women’s civil right. Betty Friedan singles out women to be the invisible minority in America. The invisible women in the American society are the ones who take an active share in the important resolution of the government and not the women who take care of the domestic duties. Friedan compares the invisibility of forward-looking women to the Afro-American permanent residents in America. For many years, the Afro-American people in the U.S. have been the invisible section of the population in the Southern states. Racial segregation in America became a crucial part of life until the segregation legally ended in 1964 because of the Civil Rights Act. The blacks were in those days invisible according to their voting rights. The voting rights of blacks were systematically restricted because the black’s voting papers did not manage to be registered. Many Afro-American were killed because...

...Liking Is for Cowards. Go for What Hurts “Liking Is for Cowards. Go for What Hurts” is an essay by Jonathan Franzen. It is based on his speech at Kenyon College, Ohio, USA. And the essay was published in The New York Times, May, 2011. “Liking Is for Cowards. Go for What Hurts” deals with the differences between peoples care and love for consumer technology and real life, such as love and nature. Jonathan Franzen starts by talking about his relationship to his smartphone. He is impressed how far the technology had advanced over years. Jonathan Franzen mentions that the social websites, like Facebook, has substituted the way to live the real life. It represents the obsession with the internet, smartphones and other things that contribute to the construction of our façades. People are afraid of their emotions and feelings and being hurt, scares them. Therefore they want to stay behind their computer screen, where they can be safe and keep a distance from the real world. He thinks that people have a desire for consumer technology, because this technology gives them other things which purpose is to make them happy without asking for anything, but instead gives them all they need. All the hating comes from love, it’s not the technology which is the problem, it’s the human reaction which is the real problem. We personify objects to make them likeable, they give us much without we’re giving back, as many see like a perfect relationship. As Jonathan Franzen mention, the primary...

...theme in hi speech “breaking Silence” regarding Vietnam. While King centers his entire speech around Vietnam, the war is used more as a case study on the issue of speaking out and taking action. His Focus in the speech is specifically on speaking out and taking action in relation to inequality that exists in society. It is a sad fact that because of comfort, complacency, a morbid fear of communism, and our proneness to adjust to injustice, the Western nations that initiated so much of the revolutionary spirit of the modern world have now become the arch anti-revolutionaries. ... Our only hope today lies in our ability to recapture the revolutionary spirit and go out into a sometimes hostile world declaring eternal hostility to poverty, racism, and militarism. With this powerful commitment we shall boldly challenge the status quo and unjust mores, and thereby speed the day when every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain.” This specific quotation deserves attention because it highlights an issue in society that is still prevalent today. Of course nowadays communism is no longer a big concern, however, racial and political inequality can still be seen everywhere. Our revolutionary spirit as Americans is also called into question through this quotation by Dr. King, who claims Americans maybe are too comfortable and willing to accept injustice. The “Break Silence” speech was given in...

...The verbalization, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” by Jonathan Edwards, is set in the time of the Great Awakening. Although this time period was after the Puritans, it sets the stage for the abundance of Edwards’ notions. Edwards’ speech, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God”, speaks to the audience because of the harshness and the ability to create trepidation in people. He strategically lowers the audience’s self-love and makes it feel guilty until eventually when hearing the horrors of hell, you endure fear. The speech begins by making you terror hell and then gives you the loophole out of it. Although the message is not distinctly stated, Edwards’ vigor in speech blows the audience into believing every single word. Given the setting and circumstances of his time, Edwards' speech, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God", is an example of an effective argument due to his allusions to the past and polished use of visual imagery to engender fear in his audience. Edwards’ speech uses visual imagery, therefore leaving a mark and creating guilt in the audiences’ conscious. After creating multiple emotions like: guilt, fear, self-realization, he gives them a mode to be saved from it all. Although each of these images were diminutive and concise, when allied with the allusions they create the trepidation Edwards worked...

...All Pun Intended Samantha Garapati Period 4: English Date: 30th May 2010 “Prick love for pricking, and you beat love down”(1.4.28); it doesn’t take the mind of a rocket scientist or a teenage boy to figure out the innuendo behind that quote. That’s precisely Shakespeare’s genius; people can enjoy his plays, whether they have the intellectually tuned minds of inventors or the less stimulated minds of cottars. Puns are one of the tools with which he accomplishes this popularity in all spectrums. Not only does he use puns to add rude humour to scenes with bawdy jokes to enhance the enjoyment of the public, he also uses it to indirectly characterize, adding dimension to characters. Finally, he also uses it to foreshadow approaching events, creating anticipation and tension in audiences. William Shakespeare’s primary use of pun is to add humour to scenes with bawdy jokes, thus providing audiences and readers comic relief and dissolving some of the tension of the previous and following scenes [T]. In the following quote, Shakespeare manages to both create the sexual imagery concerning virgins in readers’ minds and suggest that the best kind of wit is wit that is able to mould itself and accommodate many levels of meaning. Applying this to a larger subject, Shakespeare is suggesting that the best way to live life is to live on every level, base or intellectual. Our perception of life is essentially our personality, and our perspective is limited or broadened by our experiences...
