Informative Speech Outline

General Purpose: To Inform
Specific Purpose: Create awareness among the audience
Central Idea: Animal Abuse is a constantly growing issue and today I am going to provide you with some information on where it stems from and how to prevent it.
Introduction
I. Attention Material a. “We are coming up on our 6 month anniversary of the day we brought Lola home from Homeward Pet. She is an amazing addition to our family; I cannot imagine a better dog for us. We are so grateful for our experience with Homeward Pets, our lives are changed forever.” That is a direct quote from the Miles family, who adopted their dog from an animal shelter. b. Raise your hand if you have had either a pet dog or cat at one point in your life. c. About 62% of households in the United States has a pet, this includes 78.2 million dogs and 86.4 million cats are owned in the United States. d. Based on those statistics, think about this. According to the yearly animal abuse report, of the 1160 reported cases in 2010, 64.5% involved Dogs and 18% involved cats. II. Orienting Material e. Central Idea: Animal abuse is a constantly growing issue, and today I am going to provide you with some information on where it stems from, as well as how to prevent it. f. The slide show that I will show may be graphic, but are pictures from real life abusive households. These pictures are not meant to upset you, but to show you the effects that abuse can have on an animal.
Transition: While the slideshow plays through, I will be explaining the statistics on abuse in the United States.
Body
I. Main Point#1: Unfortunately, animal abuse is an extremely broad topic, so instead of going into the minute details on all animal abuse I will focus on Dogs and Cats. Now, don’t get me wrong, all animals are capable of suffering abuse, but for the sake of time, I will narrow this down. a. The most common type of abuse is neglect and abandonment. In 2010 there were 417 cases reported. Now, when I say reported, this means that these cases were taken to the authorities- this does not mean that this was the only time they occurred. More often than not cases go unreported. b. The second highest report of abuse is animal hoarding. During the same year there was almost 150 cases. c. Beating and Fighting came in third with almost 120 cases a piece. II. Main Point #2: Neglect, hoarding, physical violence, malnutrition, hair loss, shock collars. These are all examples of the abuse and suffering being inflicted on these creatures. d. As a whole, neglect is the largest growing issue facing animal cruelty. One large scale case has the potential to cause pain on hundreds of animals. These are cases such as puppy mills and animal hoarding. On the other hand, neglect can be limited to a couple animals at a time. Leaving dogs chained up outside in extreme weather conditions, or just extended periods of suffering whether it be from lack of food or water or just by un-addressed injuries. Unfortunately this is the most common type of abuse that faces animals in the United States. e. Animal Hoarding is also an aspect of neglect, but has since been put into its own category. Many of you I’m sure have heard of the show on the discovery channel, “Confessions: Animal Hoarding”. These are the extreme cases. Tens of hundreds of pets are hoarded into dirty, unsanitary homes where they are living in their own filth. This has been characterized as a mental disorder along with the hoarding of personal belongings. There have been reports of pet owners having so many animals living in their home that they don’t even know when some of them die. According to the Humane Society, animal hoarding affects an estimated 250,000 animals a year. Dr. Gary Patronek, the founder of Hoarding of Animals Research Consortium says, “We already recognize many similarities with the compulsive hoarding of objects, but there's one incredibly important difference: animal hoarding involves other living beings—namely animals—that suffer the dire consequences. This can include a multitude of severe physical and mental health problems, such as disease, weight loss, anxiety, fear, frustration, boredom, lack of exercise, among many other issues as well as illness and death." III. Main Point #3: Enough with the guilt, now the following are some ways to prevent the spread of animal abuse. f. The most beneficial way to start is to make sure that any pet you own is spayed or neutered. i. By preventing breeding with strays it can help to lower the amount of animals that are left on the street. ii. Even if it is not a stray, unwanted pets are the ones that are found the most hurt. g. Because of the amount of unwanted pets, shelters are at full capacity. My mom runs a non-profit animal shelter in Woodinville called Homeward Pet Adoption Center. This shelter is different from PAWS or the ones run by the state because they are a “no-kill” animal shelter. Euthanasia is not tolerated. iii. I know from experience the amount of animals that are left on the streets, in paper bags, garbage cans, or dropped of at shelters. There was a group of pit bull puppies that were found on the side of the road in a garbage bag. They were turned into my mom’s shelter and my mother and I personally fed them out of a syringe for weeks until they were big enough to eat on their own. These puppies were thrown away the second they hit the ground and are at their most vulnerable state. iv. It is shelters like my moms that have made a huge dent in the fight against animal abuse. v. If you are interested in learning more, Homeward Pet’s website features stories from families that have adopted from the shelter. These families voluntarily send updates to Homeward about the happiness they have gained from their adopted pet. h. Other than animal shelters, I’m sure you all have seen that Sarah McLachlan video for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or the ASPCA. vi. This organization and many others such as PETA have been working to bring light to the issue of animal cruelty. vii. With these organizations you are able to donate money to keep their cause active. They work to also create awareness of the other advocates in communities and ways to get involved. viii. It is organizations like these that have helped to raise awareness of the affects of animal abuse.
Conclusion
I. Summary: a. I hope today that my speech made an impact on you guys, and that you leave with a better understanding of the issue at hand. i. The amount of reported cases in the United States was extremely shocking. It is an uneasy feeling to know that thousands of cases go unnoticed. ii. Neglect does not just limit cases to 1 animal. A person can hoard hundreds of animals and only be reported once, while these hundreds of animals are suffering or dying. iii. Fortunately for organizations like Homeward Pet Adoption Center and ASPCA, they are fighting the overwhelming battle against animal cruelty. II. Clincher: b. To end with a quote by Mark Twain, “The fact that man knows right from wrong proves his intellectual superiority to the other creatures; but the fact that he can do wrong proves his moral inferiority to any creatures that cannot.”

Speech

...Journal #1 My speech wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be, but it could have been better if I put more time into getting more information from my partner. The body paragraphs needed to give more information and go into more detail. Although it wasn’t that bad of a speech giving the thought that we met up for about thirty minutes. Back in high school when someone was giving a speech, we, the audience always tried to make them laugh, or simply just didn’t pay attention to the speaker and did something else. Now the audience was paying attention and being respectful which calmed me down when giving my speech. As the speaker I needed to be more enthusiastic while giving my speech, because how is the audience going to be interested if I don’t even seem interested. I noticed very few people glancing at their phones or just with a blank look in their face; this made me relax a little more for some reason. Even though I could have had more information and gone more into detail, my speech did flow from the thesis statement to my conclusion paragraph. I was getting more nervous as the names kept getting closer to mine, once my partner Aldo, brought me up when he gave his speech, which calmed my nervousness down a bit because it wasn’t that bad being in front of the class and having everyone’s eyes looking at you. Once my turn came to speak, I took deep breaths as I made my way to the front of the classroom, and once there I paused, and took one last deep breath, and then...

Speech to Entertain

...Speech to Entertain: An Overview The primary purpose of a speech to entertain is to have the audience relax, smile and enjoy the occasion. The speech should have a central theme or a focus. A series of jokes will NOT work well for this type of speech. Good speeches to entertain typically mix humor with more serious morals, lessons learned, or experiences. In other words, they have a real point to make… they are not just silly, slapstick humor. You can tell a lighthearted, personal story that reveals a life lesson you’ve learned or examine a familiar subject from a different and unexpected viewpoint or take a lighthearted look at a particular issue. Example: Summer jobs: “Summer jobs for high schoolers: The daily diary of the American Nightmare.” Additional suggestions for the composition and delivery of after dinner speeches are as follows: 1. Carefully select an interesting, timely, and appropriate topic. Having something familiar in the talk that the audience can relate to will enhance listener interest. 2. Build your speech around a central theme, moral, or idea. 3. Support your main point or central theme with colorful stories, narrative and examples. 4. Be imaginative and creative when delivering your talk. Few speeches demand more imagination and creativity than the speech to entertain. 5. Be positive and good-natured when delivering your talk—irony and sarcasm are acceptable but not bitterness. 6. Be optimistic and modest when speaking and create...

Reform Speech Critique

...The speech that I listened to was a speech by Melvin Russell and it is called, “I Love Being a Police Officer, but We Need Reform.” He was a very effective speaker his speech was very engaging and had some humor added to him. I would rate this speech as a nine out of ten points. The reason I would rate it this way is because he was very organized with his thoughts, he even had a piece of paper that he use to keep the speech going. He used real life examples to support what he was saying. The way he would say things would also make you think about think that you have been through. Melvin Russell said, “I need to say this: it's not just law enforcement, though. Because every one of us makes up a community. Everybody makes up a community. And as communities -- can I say this? -- we have put too much responsibility on law enforcement.” He made a very good point when he said this,...

I felt fairly comfortable in front of the class. I knew what I was going to talk about, my topic was not too hard to get enough information in four to six minutes without leaving anything out. The speech went well. I was in the time limit. I had good eye contact. My technology worked perfectly. The only thing I did not do was verbally cite my sources. Once I was done, I instantly thought about not citing my sources. I originally planned to cite each source at the end 0f each main point. I forgot about the first source and then quickly decided while giving my speech that I would throw them...

Introduction Speech For Burritos

...My introduction speech did not go as well as I had hoped. Although it didn’t go altogether badly, I feel like it didn’t go too badly. The audience seemed to be very attentive and receptive to what I was saying, and I found that to be encouraging. I thought that explaining my Lebanese heritage in a comical manner worked out very well, because it brought out my humorous personality and simultaneous allowed the audience to get to know my roots. Calling my sister a babe may have been a little bit weird, but the audience laughed nonetheless. My favorite part of my speech was the end, when I said that I like burritos. Frankly, I couldn’t think of anything to say and burritos are always my go-to. I mean, who doesn’t love burritos? I was a...

In the outline I included all of the requirements that was needed starting at the top with General Purpose, Specific Purpose, Central Idea, going down to the Introduction, the meat which is the Body, the Conclusion and the Bibliography. According to my instructor, I dressed professionally, I stated my credibility, had good resources in alphabetical format, my transitions were good and I also used verbal citations in my speech from research related to my topic. With that being said she gave me two grades. I received a 14.25/15 on my speech and for the outline I received a 4.75/5. I was pleased to know that I did well however, I can do better. The second credibility is consolidated with my classmate perception of my presentation and my roommate feedback. My classmate Mena Howash gave me feedback on my presentation. Well Said Speech

...According to Darlene Price, President of Well Said, Inc. and author of “Well Said! Presentations and Conversations That Get Results,” speakers only have about 60 seconds to get the attention of the audience, establish credibility, introduce the topic, and encourage the audience to listen (Insider, 2014). This makes the introduction extremely important to the success of the speech. Goals of the introduction are to get the attention of the audience, establish listener relevance, begin to establish speaker credibility and goodwill, and identify the thesis (Verderber, Verderber, & Sellnow, 2011). There are several ways to grab the attention of the audience. A startling statement, direct or hypothetical questions, stories, personal reference, and...

Informative Speech Reflection Paper

...Abubakr Mohamed 1. What I most liked about my speech was the first three and a half minutes because I started out my speech with confidence and strong voice that carries throughout the room. I also followed my outline and stick to it which made my purpose clear and showed the importance of the topic to the audience. Moreover my eye contacts was on entire audience , my posture was good , legs did not cross, no leaning on podium, and my hands movement was minimal and did not move too much which is the case when I usually talk to people. I think I also was able to show the importance of my topic to audience by getting their attention. I avoided making my speech to technical so it will be easy for those who are not familiar with the topic to understand. 2. After the three and a half minutes I started to rely heavily on my outline instead of eye contact and that the main point I need to work on. Also, I had multiple problems with stumbling over my words and using fill in words instead of speaking clearly and using very descriptive words. Furthermore, I saw that I tended to sway a lot, and that is something I will consciously try to fix during my next speech. In term of content, my outline needed more information and examples that will encourage the audience to ask questions after the speech and that will reflect their interest in my speech. For delivery , I was very nervous and I stumbled over my words and I had to pause longer than I should to recall my points ...

Kochiyama Speech 'Consciousness Is Power'

...Speeches can lead to an audience with different opinions about the message. Some people might support the speaker’s main points, while others will not. A speech that exemplifies this is the speech “Consciousness is Power”. Kochiyama was a famous Asian-American civil rights activist. She gave the speech “Consciousness is Power” on November 3,1995 to an audience of primarily Asian Americans. Speeches commonly leave people with mixed feelings about the message of the speech. It is very rare that everyone will interpret a speech in the same way. The difference in feelings can be attributed to several things. For example, the type of language choices made by the author can lead to a disconnect in terms of how supporter and non-supporter interprets...
