...Road Speed Limits Professor: Kanyo 08/03/2011 Mid-Michigan Community College Abstract Most of nations have their own road speed limits. This is also an argumentative problem in the modern society. A number of people think that it is necessary to use speed limits to protect people because they believe that lower speed limit can decrease fatalities, injuries and property damage. Others believe that we need to change this policy because it cannot correspond with the development of car quality. According to the data from many car manufactures, the technology of vehicles has changed a lot. I think we do not need to maintain the old standard. We should make new policy to accommodate new technology and new society. Lower speed do not means safer and not fast speed means dangers. I am the one who wish government can change this policy because I think that changing the speed limit cannot only save our time but also boost our economy. Road Speed Limits Most of countries have their own speed limit; it is used to regulate the speed of road vehicles. Speed limits may define maximum, minimum or no speed limit and are normally indicated using a traffic sign. Speed limits are commonly set by the legislative bodies of nations or provincial governments and enforced by national or regional police or judicial bodies. The first speed limit legislation was created in the United Kingdom with the Locomotive Acts. Drives are required to control at a safe speed for...

...55 MPH SPEED LIMIT SPEED! The only thing that people think about when they are in a rush. Have you ever wonder why there are different speed limits around the U.S.? I bet you have. Every day somewhere, someone gets in a car crash or is getting a traffic ticket. The reasons for these situations is because people don’t go by the speed limit. In 1974, President Richard M. Nixon, signs the Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act, setting a new national maximum speed limit. He signed a federal law lowering all national highway speed limits to 55 MPH. This act was intended to force Americans to drive at speeds deemed more fuel-efficient, curbing the U.S. appetite for foreign oil. To conserve fuel and save lives, the 55 MPH speed limit should be restored to save fuel,...

...saying. 1) the so called fast lane is always for the "faster driver" BS! I personally have seen both if not all three lanes be used as a "slow lane" it didn't matter where I lived... From Georgia, to Florida, to Oregon, to California, to Arizona, back to Florida and finally in Tennessee... it did not matter 2) the fact that slow drivers in the left lane should be ticketed... again BS if you really think that is THAT horrible that they are moving that slow, how about you pass them on the right and go about your merry way. there is nothing stopping you from taking the 10 seconds to pass them. then you could speed along your merry way. this article was well written, i will not lie, however, saying that all drivers need to go fast or faster to be allowed in the left lane is utter nonsense... speed limits were made for the speed that it was averaged out to be. if the speed limit is in fact 60 and that person is going 60, they do NOT need to be cited. the ones that need to be cited are the tailgaters, road ragers and in general...

...Neighborhood Speed Control By Charles Russell, 21 May 2011 Thesis: Changing our neighborhood traffic speed so everyone can be safe, when they want to take a walk, jog down the road and or even ride their bikes but most important, protecting their most valuable asset; their children. There is a beautiful upscale Washington DC suburb called “Kingstown” located in Alexandria, VA. This is the area my family and I decided to live about five years ago. We purchase a townhouse located off a street called “Chelsea Search Way” which is a cuddly sac off another street named “Summer Ridge.” This is the main street going through our neighborhood and links many cuddle sacs together. Summer Ridge is like one big loop that turns off of Kingstown Village Parkway and then reconnects after a mile and a half. Summer Ridge is one of the liveliest streets neighborhoods you would ever see. Everywhere you look there are small children playing, people walking their dogs, joggers running and bicyclist’s riding. The only problem with this is that this neighborhood could be one of the most dangerous places because there is a lot of traffic going up and down this road. Each year over 4,000 sons, daughters, mothers & fathers were killed while walking in their neighborhoods or crossing streets. Fairfax County must not understand that there is a problem here, because the speed limit was set at 25 miles per hour, which I believe is way too fast for such a playground. Not only the speed is the problem...

...THE RIDE OF A LIFETIME Last year, when I was still living in India something terrible happened. In India everybody in high school has a motorcycle, in the US if a teenage driver gets pulled over by a cop for speeding twenty miles per hour above the speed limit or driving with out license might end up in jail. In India there are no speed limits in cities. If a teenager gets caught by a cop speeding or driving with out license, he can get off by buying a cop a coffee or giving him $10. For me a motorcycle was something more than two wheels and metal, it was freedom for me. According to me freedom is not asking some one for a ride to school or home or on long rides beside mountains racing friends. I finally asked my mother for a motorcycle. Before I begin, I think it is important to give a little background on how I got to where I am today. As a teenager, I had a terrifying experience on a four-wheeler that led me to fear the falling off part. My cousin Sam, his girlfriend of the time, and I were riding on a four-wheeler. He decided to let her drive, and as she jerked forward attempting to take off, I fell backwards off the back. Hanging on by the bars, I could feel my head grazing the blacktop road. It caused a great deal of alarm, but I was a teenager so we continued on our way not telling anyone what had happened to avoid getting into trouble. Since then I started preferring motorcycles rather than...

...Benton Mr. Clark Writing 1 Compare and Contrast Essay Autobahn vs. U.S. highways When it comes to the U.S. we love the American open road, there is nothing like it. We have all the necessary traffic laws, cameras, and speed limits. But who needs that when you have the autobahn in Germany! Like every other place in the world the U.S. highways have long stretches of open road. The down side to the autobahn is because there are no speed limits, there are more deaths. There is a news report I read that 4 people were found in the trenches which is never a good thing. U.S. highways are safe for the most part people still have accidents but a large percent of them are usually ok. In the U.S. are traffic laws are pretty self explanatory. If you speed and get caught the police will pull you over and politely (yeah right) give you a ticket. If you feel like they are wrong you can go to court and fight it. In Germany, there is no speed limit so it gives the cop less work to do. In Texas, the most common speed limit is 60 mph. people who drive a ninety thousand dollar sports car in Texas are wasting money mainly because you can not max out the power potential that you might want to achieve. In Germany it is the opposite. There is no speed limits on the Autobahn there are some laws but most of them are towards the truck drivers and farmers. There is nothing wrong per say with the American way of doing things I just believe that I need to drive fast. The autobahn is a way...

...Darpa Challenge The problem is creating a vehicle with good handling on dirt and in heat without compromising speed and gas efficiency. I will not know how many way points there would be, and the degree of mobility that would be needed or weight/ height limits we may encounter. We have a general idea of the terrain but we do not have full information on it. I am looking at a speed limit of 20-25 miles per hour. It is assuming that the majority of the course does not happen on trails with set speed limits below 15 miles per hour. When considering the speed limit, I took into account possible tire changes, rest room breaks, breaks to re hydrate and eat, and slower portions of the course such as turns or unstable terrains and unexpected stops. Keeping a smaller vehicle design will help with turns, gas consumption, weight/height/width restrictions on the course, Using a general all terrain tire will help with most terrain that maybe encountered. Learning strategies for driving in a dessert such as, releasing a certain amount of air from a tire helps with traction in sand. Having a spare set of tires, as well as specialized tires for extreme terrain. It will be hard to fully prepare the vehicle for maneuverability and driver safety if we are unsure of what kind route the driver has to take. A straight route with few turns would not need a roll cage, where as tight turns or going along side a plateau would require one which adds weight. We can prepare tires accordingly, adjust...

... In fact, this item managed to hold my interest since I am really concerned with awakening the public on the numerous numbers of accidents occurring a year. If truth be told, over 500 people in Lebanon die every year in car accidents mostly caused by drinking and exceeding speed limits. Additionally, more than 9000 accidents are taking place each year, which of course are no coincidence. Thus, convincing people to be cautious and watchful is, without a doubt, a requirement. Subjective part: As abovementioned, drinking too much along with driving too fast has already cost and threatened so many lives. As a matter of fact, many people, when being in nightspots, tend to drink an outsized amount of alcohol, and on their way home, become fatalities or sufferers of car accidents. Accordingly, in order to circumvent such dramatic catastrophes, I think that the government should place security forces in almost every region to catch and punish the persons who consumed an amount of alcohol greater than the tolerated average. Plus, as stated earlier, most of the people can’t stand driving behind cars motoring at a snail's pace. In reality, they tend to overtake them even if they had to exceed the speed limit, and most of them turn into victims of grave car accidents. Hence, containing such disasters would begin by installing many radar sets in different roads and regions, which, once they seize somebody disobeying the regulation, penalize and fine him. As a consequence, drivers will...

...Introduction One of the problems linked with the assessment of research based on statistical analysis involves the determination of whether a true cause and effect connection between variables exists, or is it just a statistical relationship known as correlation. While there may be correlation between variables, there is not a causal relationship unless the variation in the independent variable or variables actually causes the variation in the dependent variable. Often correlation is misinterpreted as causation, as is the case in the examples presented in this essay. The first example is from a journal article that says watching TV increases a persons risk of heart disease and non-cancer related deaths. The second two examples are related to transportation, one saying that speeding causes car crashes and the other saying population in a traffic analysis zone (TAZ) causes trips produced. Although correlation is necessary it is not sufficient, it is important that a true causal relation exists before making conclusions. Body (Example A) The first study is presented in the journal, Circulation-Journal of the American Heart Association with the title, Television Viewing time and Mortality: The Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle Study (AusDiab). The baseline data for the study was gathered between the years of 1999 and 2000. The locations for data collection were chosen based on Census Collector Districts in each of the Australian states and in the Northern...

...Dan A Parallel Message Analysis of Ecovia’s Don’t Speed Speeding plays a role in over one third of all fatal car crashes. If this amount of people speeding could be cut in half, thousands of innocent lives could be saved. Driving too fast has become an issue ever since cars were put on the road but society feels it is time to put an end to this. There are many advertisements and commercials on the television and on billboards, but they don’t seem to be doing the job to stop the speeding. Ecovia, a transit company, is trying to get the message across in a different way. They are tying the message of “don’t speed” in with a very popular issue, of violence against women. Is speeding just as serious as violence against women? That is the question this image is trying to get humanity to think about. The use of text, color, shadows and contrast make this image prove that driving too fast is equally as appalling as domestic abuse. This ad portrays an image of what seems to be a man’s fist striking the jaw of a woman. Right above the man’s arm there is a text box with the words “STOP THE VIOLENCE DON’T SPEED.” The words “DON’T SPEED” are written in the color red. On the man’s hand there is a painting of a red truck. On the woman’s face there is a painting of a yellow SUV. The red truck makes the red writing really stand out. It also draws the message of don’t speed to the red truck to make it seem as if the driver of the red truck is the guilty party in the crash...
