to the overall effect and impact that the characters have on each other.

Spoon River

...Spoon River Anthology Benjamin Franklin once said “Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning.” Franklin is stating that without growth and progress the world would be standing still, not improving or achieving anything. This relates to Spoon River Anthology in the sense that the world is constantly changing and needs to continue to change or we won’t be helping anyone or any situation. In Spoon River there are many themes discussed that help explain the townspeople’s thoughts and roles as the changes happen. Prohibition, women’s rights, racism, Social Darwinism, and progressive reform are some of the themes that are described in Spoon River Anthology. Since I myself am a woman the idea of women’s rights really sticks in my head and seems like a very important and good change for the world. Also Prohibition had a major impact on the world at this specific time period, 1865- 1916, so it is a major theme throughout Spoon River. I am a very strong, independent, smart woman and I still cannot believe women at one time had no rights. Their job was to stay at home, take care of the kids, and provide meals for the man when he got home. This is not in the slightest bit fair. Women weren’t even allowed to vote! The Fifteenth Amendment, ratified in 1870, states “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or...

One Hard Life Is Not Always Easy In Spoon River Anthology

...Brieanna Fredricks One Hard Life (A Discussion of the theme Life is Not Always Easy in Spoon River Anthology) Nothing about life is easy; you work, you try, and sometimes you fail regardless of your efforts. Some people believe in reincarnation, others in some form of an afterlife, and some believe you only have one life. Believing that you’re only able to live one life could benefit the person because they take that idea and they accept it. In that acceptance they choose to live everyday as if it were there last, so that by their last breath they can say they had a good life, even with the struggles and heartache. Most people live with the belief that we only have one life; although life is a gift with endless possibilities, it's not always...

How to Beat the Micros

...*** A Complete Guide to Beating the Micros *** PROLOGUE The goal of this guide is to provide anyone with the skill-set and knowledge needed to beat the micro limits online. A lot of people will shrug off the micros and repeat the same thing over and over: "Value bet, don't bluff, ????, PROFIT!". They’re actually right, but I don't feel that advice in and of itself is that helpful to a new player. Beating the micro limits online is a pretty simple process, but getting to that simple process is a whole other story. For a lot of players, including myself, it's a big hump to get over and hopefully this guide can make it easier. If you've been playing 2NL, 5NL, 10NL, or 25NL online and can't seem to post a profit, win consistently or beat the limit, then this guide is for you. This guide will be updated as required with suggestions from more experienced players than myself and possibly with links to further reading as well. Yes this is very long, but with poker you pretty much get what you put in If you're already beating 25NL or above you probably won't get any new information from this, but feel free to read it. Enjoy! WHY WE WIN: THANKS FOR ALL THE FISH First let's explain exactly why beating the micro limits is so easy. I think knowing why what you're doing works is extremely helpful when you're learning. Poker is a game of skill, like chess or backgammon. The short term goal of poker is to win money, but the underlying goal of any game like poker or chess isn't actually...

Walter Benjamin

...Walter Benjamin (1936) The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction ________________________________________ Source: UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television; Transcribed: by Andy Blunden 1998; proofed and corrected Feb. 2005. ________________________________________ “Our fine arts were developed, their types and uses were established, in times very different from the present, by men whose power of action upon things was insignificant in comparison with ours. But the amazing growth of our techniques, the adaptability and precision they have attained, the ideas and habits they are creating, make it a certainty that profound changes are impending in the ancient craft of the Beautiful. In all the arts there is a physical component which can no longer be considered or treated as it used to be, which cannot remain unaffected by our modern knowledge and power. For the last twenty years neither matter nor space nor time has been what it was from time immemorial. We must expect great innovations to transform the entire technique of the arts, thereby affecting artistic invention itself and perhaps even bringing about an amazing \change in our very notion of art.” Paul Valéry, Pièces sur L’Art, 1931 Le Conquete de l’ubiquite Preface When Marx undertook his critique of the capitalistic mode of production, this mode was in its infancy. Marx directed his efforts in such a way as to give them prognostic value. He went back to the basic conditions underlying capitalistic...

The dog was part of it. He wasn't fond of German shepherds, and this one, though he was standing quietly, reminded him of Panther, the police dog that rode with Deputy Kenny Moore and was quick to bite suspects in the crotch at the slightest command. Most of the time he regarded Moore as an idiot, but he was still just about the closest thing to a friend that Clayton had in the department, and he had to admit that Moore had a way of telling those crotch-biting stories that made Clayton double over in laughter. And Moore would definitely have appreciated the little skinny-dipping party Clayton had just broken up, when he'd spied a couple of coeds sunning down by the creek in all their morning glory. He hadn't been there for more than a few minutes and had snapped only a couple...

The roof had fallen in long ago, and an enormous sycamore had grown on the spot where the sacristy had once stood. He decided to spend the night there. He saw to it that all the sheep entered through the ruined gate, and then laid some planks across it to prevent the flock from wandering away during the night. There were no wolves in the region, but once an animal had strayed during the night, and the boy had had to spend the entire next day searching for it. He swept the floor with his jacket and lay down, using the book he had just finished reading as a pillow. He told himself that he would have to start reading thicker books: they lasted longer, and made more comfortable pillows. It was still dark when he awoke, and, looking up, he could see the stars through the half-destroyed roof. Paulo Coelho - The Alchemist Page 2 / 94 I wanted to sleep a little longer, he thought. I don’t have a problem,” I said. She didn’t react. Just gestured that I remove my shoes and take the couch.
