Spotted Goby The spotted goby, also known as the round goby, is an invasive species of fish. This species is known scientifically as Neogobius melanostomus. A spotted goby can be found at the bottom of lakes and rivers. This belligerent species can range in size from three to ten inches in length. With a dark gray colored body, a spotted goby is known for having a black spot on its back fin. In addition, a spotted goby has a barrel-shaped body. Able to reproduce multiples times throughout the year, the population of spotted goby can quickly expand. Spotted goby are furthermore capable of surviving in low quality water. The population growth of spotted goby has had negative effects on indigenous species. Spotted goby feed on numerous species of native fish in the areas it resides in. By eating fish eggs, spotted goby have made native species decrease in population. Spotted goby, furthermore, compete with other species for food sources and shelter. These species include the mottled sculpin, logperch, the northern madtom, and the eastern sand darter. The spotted goby has also been found to be associated with outbreaks of botulism type E. This disease has resulted in the death of numerous birds and fish.
