Question # 3

Is there a significant difference in the mean household grocery order amounts in St. Catherines, Edmonton and Moncton. If there is a difference among the means, indicate where orders are higher and/or lower.

To determine whether there is a difference among the means of each city, a one-way ANOVA test will be performed. A level of significance of 0.05 will be used. We will assume that the populations are normally distributed, the populations have equal variances and the samples are randomly and independently drawn.

Hypothesis:

µ1 = household grocery order amounts from St. Catherines µ2 = household grocery order amounts from Edmonton µ3 = household grocery order amounts from Moncton α = 0.05 level of significance
Ho: µ1 = µ2 = µ3
Ha: Not all of the population means are the same
- at least one μj is different; j = 1, 2, 3

Results:

F Critical Value = 3.103
Fcalc = 7.128 p-value = 0.001
∴ p-value < α

With a p-value of 0.001 and a 0.05 level of significance, we reject the null hypothesis because the p-value is less than the specified level of significance. Therefore, there is evidence that at least one μj differs from the rest.

Mean Grocery Order Amounts from St. Catherines to Edmonton:
Ho: µ1 = µ2
Ha: µ1 ≠ µ2 p-value = 0.002

Since the p-value = 0.002 < 0.05, the conclusion is to reject the null hypothesis and there is evidence to indicate that the means for St. Catherines and Edmonton are different. There is also evidence to indicate that the household grocery order amounts are higher in Edmonton because of the negative mean difference between the two cities.

Mean Grocery Order Amounts from St. Catherines to Moncton:
Ho: µ1 = µ3
Ha: µ1 ≠ µ3 p-value = 0.711
Since the p-value = 0.711 > 0.05, the conclusion is to not reject the null hypothesis and there is no evidence to indicate that the means for St. Catherines to Moncton are different. There is also evidence to indicate that the household grocery order amounts are higher in Moncton because of the negative mean difference between the two cities.

Mean Grocery Order Amounts from Edmonton to Moncton:
Ho: µ2 = µ3
Ha: µ2 ≠ µ3 p-value = 0.016

Since the p-value = 0.016 < 0.05, the conclusion is to reject the null hypothesis and there is evidence to indicate that the means for Edmonton to Moncton are different. There is also evidence to indicate that the household grocery order amounts are higher in Edmonton because of the positive mean difference between the two cities.

Therefore, through the use of multiple comparisons, it is evident that Edmonton has the highest mean household grocery order amounts and St. Catherines has the lowest mean household grocery order amounts.

The data included are fictional and were created solely for this assignment. The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D scale) is often utilized to measure depressive symptomology (Radloff, 1977). It is a self-assessment that is completed by the individual. The CES-D contains 20-items rated on a 4-point scale (0 = Rarely or None of the Time to 3 = Most or All of the Time). The phrase “Within the past week did you…” prefaces the questions in order to emphasize recent depressive mood. Scores are summed and can range from 0 to 60. Traditionally, individuals with scores over 16 are identified as “depressed” (Weissman, et al., 1977), though due to high false positive rates, a score of 27 is considered a more useful cut-off (Zich, et al., 1990). The full scale can be accessed at: http://www.chcr.brown.edu/pcoc/cesdscale.pdf. Items 4, 8, 12, and 16 are reversed to avoid “yay-saying” or “nay saying” (Radloff, 1977). The software name originally stood for Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). SPSS is the acronym of Statistical Package for the Social Science.SPSS is one of the most popular statistical packages which can perform highly complex data manipulation and analysis with simple instructions. It is designed for both interactive and non-interactive uses. It is also used by market researchers, health researchers, survey companies, government, education researchers, marketing organizations, data miners, and others. The original SPSS manual (Nie, Bent & Hull, 1970) has been described as one of "sociology's most influential books" for allowing ordinary researchers to do their own statistical analysis.[4] In addition to statistical analysis, data management (case selection, file reshaping, creating derived data) and data documentation (a metadata dictionary was stored in the data file) are features of the base software. ...then were given survey questionnaires. Sample size n was computed using the multiple regression sample size calculator. From that, the number of observations was also dependent on the sample size. The computed sample size was 103 however, a total of 45 respondents were acceptable by using multiple regression analysis because according to Hair, Anderson, Tatham, & Black (1995), in order to maximize the number of observations per variable, the minimum ratio of five observations per independent variable should be utilized. The relationship of various DINESCAPE factors and overall satisfaction were determined using different statistical tools like descriptive Statistics, multiple regression analysis, and correlation analysis using the SPSS software. By using multiple regression analysis, it showed that for fast food restaurants not all of the DINESCAPE factors turned out to be significant. The most number of specific factors that were significant is three. For Jollibee and McDonald’s, there were no significant factors. For Chowking, only three specific factors were significant; enough space seating, crowded seating arrangement, and warm atmospheric factors. For casual dining restaurants, only few resulted to be significant; seats/furnishings is the only factor that is most common among the significant specific factors. In correlation analysis, individually there are more specific factors significant in fast food restaurants than in casual dining...

Minitab Tutorial

...STAT582 HW7 Review of Two Statistical Software Packages – Minitab and SPSS Yan Sun As a statistician, have you ever got stuck in front of your computer, trying to figure out the correct syntax of a command to type into the little programming window, and just could not get it right? At that moment, I am sure you would wish there was some magic easy button that you could just click and then things would work the way they should. Well, magic does not happen everyday. However, some better choices can make life easier. Instead of using programmed command lines, some statistical software make their usage much easier by using a menu-driven interface. This kind of software are like well-organized control panels. Each of the things you need to do is controlled by a button somewhere on the panel. Once you get familiar with the layout of the panel, the actual work should be quite an enjoyable process. Several good menu-interface statistical software are available. Among them, Minitab and SPSS are the most widely used ones. This report serves as an introduction to these two software packages. For each of them, the software’s specialties, advantages, and suitability will be discussed. Some important functionalities, their implementations, and programming in the two software will be introduced. This report also includes ‘helpful resources’, which I personally found very helpful in learning and using the two software. 1. Minitab History Minitab was...
