SRYou day is a day for Salve Regina students to present their research projects to students and faculty. The events I went to were the poster presentations. One poster presentation I listened to was about energy usage on our campus. The presentation showed the energy usage on Bryant University’s campus as a baseline, since the campus size and population are about the same as Salve Regina. Figure 1 (see in image on last page) shows Bryant University’s energy usage in 2015. Figure 2 (see in image on last page) shows Salve Regina’s energy usage in various parts of the campus, such as Miley Hall and the McKillop Library. The figure showed large increases in energy uses in multiple parts of campus from 2009-2016. The presentation concluded with the solutions for lowering Salve Regina’s energy usage. Solutions included adding a flashing reminder to turn off manually controlled lights on campus, investing in wind turbines, and placing “Shut off the Light” reminders near light switches.…show more content… I never realized Salve Regina could save so much money by investing in wind turbines. I also never thought about how much more energy our campus has used over the years. I find it intriguing how we, the student body, do not take energy usage more seriously. The more energy we use, the more money is being spent. The university could be saving this money and putting it back into our campus and student body. For example, the money could be used for building renovations and student activities. Not only would we save money, we would be a more environmentally friendly campus. To do this, we can use more energy efficient lightbulbs throughout campus and shut off lights when they are not necessary. This is the only planet we have, and I believe the presenter brought up very important points for not only university faculty and staff to keep in mind, but also for the students to remember and help in the effort of using less
