There are five stages of sleep. They are 1. Falling asleep and trying to get comfortable. Some people can get through this stage in a few minutes and other people it takes longer. 2. You go into a light sleep. You can still be taken up easily here but you are starting to lose consciousness. Your heart rate and breathing slow down here. 3. You are in a deeper sleep and on to the 4th stage of deep sleep. This is also called delta sleep because of the delta waves of the brain. This is when your body relaxes and regenerates. The final stage is REM or rapid eye movement. In this stage you dream. There are some beliefs about dreaming which are: External stimuli such as a phone ringing or knocking on the door can intergrade into your dreams. Another belief is that dreams last a short time. Some also feel that they do not dream at all while others believe that erections are due to a sexual dream when they are actually due to sheets or something rubbing against the penis. Sleep walking and talking are a belief that happen while you dream. A couple of theories of dreaming are recuperation where your body restores itself and psychoanalytic dreams where your subconscious acting out your hidden desires or thoughts accord to Sigmund Freud. There are other theories about dreaming as well such as we dream as therapy to make sense of things. I think we dream for all of the reasons. I think that for me anyway, it helps me deal with things and realize things to make sense of them. I have sleep paralysis and I have some pretty crazy nightmares and can’t wake up. My husband says I scream but can’t move but yet I feel like I am moving and a spirit is entering my body. Dreams are so interesting to me and what they mean. I would like to learn more about this topic one day to understand more about why I have the dreams I do.

Lastly, but not the least, Stage 5 is identified as dream sleep and with REM (McPhee). Each stage is not just discerned by its major aspects, but by the activity in the brain in each stage. Although sleep can be described through the various behavioral changes, the different activities in the brain allow the discerning of each stage during sleep. ...Stage 1 This is the beginning of the sleep cycle and is a relatively light stage. This is more of a transition period between wakefulness and sleep. In Stage 1, the brain produces high amplitude theta waves, which are very slow brain waves. This period of sleep lasts only a brief time (around 5-10 minutes). Stage 2 This stage lasts for approximately 20 minutes. The brain will begin to produce bursts of rapid, rhythmic brain wave activity known as sleep spindles. Your body temperature starts to decrease and heart rate begins to slow. Stage 3 This is deep, slow brain waves known as delta waves begin to emerge during stage 3 sleep. Stage 3 is a transitional period between light sleep and a very deep sleep. Stage 4 At this stage, sometimes referred to as delta sleep because of the slow brain waves.
