...Stan Lee: Genius Award Daniel Orminski HUM/102: Introduction to the Humanities- The Renaissance to the Present July 29, 2013 Rachelle Williams Stan Lee: Genius Award According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary (2013), “A genius is a person with extraordinary intellectual power, especially as manifested in creative activity.” Stan Lee may not have the amount of intelligence or inventions as Albert Einstein or Benjamin Franklin, but he is a genius in his own in way. Stan Lee is responsible for some of the best known characters in literature, except there is not an Oliver Twist or a Huckleberry Fin in these books. These characters are super heroes and super villains trying to save the world from destruction. Born during the great depression, Stanley Martin Lieber was born on December 28, 1922 in New York City. After Stan changed his last name to Lee, he was hired as an office assistant by Timely Comics in 1939. In the early 1940’s he was promoted to an interim editor. Stan Lee also served time with the United States Army during World War II. During the war, Lee worked as an illustrator and writer for the Army (Stan Lee, 2013). After World War II, Stan Lee continued working with Timely Comics, which was now known as Marvel Comics. In order to compete with DC comics and their new Justice League of America comics, Marvel instructed Lee to create a new comic series. With this, Stan Lee created the Fantastic Four in 1961. ...The Stanford Prison Experiment was unethical for a number of reasons. According to McLeod (2007), for research to be considered as being ethical, there should be informed consent from the participants. Informed consent can only result if all participants have been given adequate information on the purpose of the research and the procedures to be used in the study. Additionally, informed consent depends on the participant’s full understanding of any dangers they may face during the research. However, in the Stanford case, participants were not fully debriefed on risks of participation in the experiment (Chang, 2015). Additionally, the researcher, Zimbardo promoted an unpredictable research that himself could not predict the outcome. Consequently, any consent may have been gotten through deception (McLeod, 2007). Again, the research was unethical as it exposed participants to unknown dangers. As a result, two participants had to remove from the experiment before its conclusion. Indeed, participants playing the role of prisoners were exposed to psychological and physical abuse. For instance, one participant who played the role of a prisoner had to be released before the due time because of uncontrollable bursts of screaming and crying after being subjected to abuse (Rubina, 2015). Again, the Stanford research was unethical since it was ended prematurely before fully debriefing participants about its success or failure. More importantly, the study broke research ethics...

...That one song that moves you to the beat during a workout. That one song that helps make everything better. That one song that makes me lose my sense of reality, picks me up when I’m down, is “Stan” by Marshall Mathers (Eminem). “Stan” is by far one of Eminem’s greatest songs ever made, it’s one of the songs that made him so popular. I don’t listen to rap but I love listening to “Stan.” It’s one of the deepest songs written and produced by Eminem. This song goes really in-depth about love, suicide, depression, obsession, and murder. I am choosing to interpret this song so you can see it from my point of view. Stan, is the main character from the song he’s a crazy obsessed fan of Eminem. At one point in the song it shows Stan writing a letter to Eminem, he has pictures of Eminem plastered all over his wall. A second part that makes Stan so obsessed is he dyed his hair blond like Eminem’s in the song too. In the first few verses of the song this person “Stan” is a big fan of Eminem and pours his heart out into these letters he writes him. In the letters, he talks about how messed up his life was and still is and how they’re childhoods were so much alike. Including how they should become best friends and they were born from the ghetto, had abusive dads neglected as children’s, and so on. Stan basically explains why he loves Eminem so much, and why they should be together (as...

...real situations with some superhuman powers thrown in for good measure. The heart of the conflict is an ideological difference of opinion between the two sides, and in a surprising turn of events, it’s our very own law-abiding, orders-following Captain who’s opposing the decisions of the Government to pass the Sokovia Accords in the aftermath of their epic battle in Sokovia as shown in Age of Ultron. Thus, the Avengers, for the first time in Marvel history, stand divided, but it is heart-warming to see that despite it all, there exists zero animosity; it’s friends against friends, and no Accord can strain that relationship over a single night. But add to that a conspiracy involving Cap’s Achilles Heel, Bucky (played by the dashing Sebastian Stan), and you have Captain and his team rallying to protect him from being wrongfully tried for a crime he didn’t commit, turning them into outlaws, vigilantes, criminals…you name it. Jaw dropping action sequences have always been Marvel’s plus-point, and Civil War does not fail to disappoint in that (or any) category. Love Bucky or hate him, but you can’t not emit a gasp when he punches off a guy driving a motorcycle in full speed , and then hops astride it in one swift move. IN SLOW MOTION. And you can’t not grip the armrest (or...

The story had many things in it which clearly violated the code and when they summited it they were denied approval the code. They published the story anyway without approval and it sold well without the seal. This did not cause Marvel any issues but the Comic Code Authority instead by pressuring them to change the code since it was outdated. ...Running head: WEEK THREE INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT 1 Popular Literature Paper SOC/105 October 10 2012 WEEK THREE INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT 2 The following paper will describe to the reader a brief overview, followed by a little bit about the author, and then explain how this type of popular fiction fits with other literature in the same genre. Comic books of yesterday and today have introduced a lot of new and interesting characters. The character that I selected to right about is the Incredible Hulk. The Incredible Hulk was introduced to the world in a comic book back in 1962. This character, Bruce Banner, was a scientist that was working with atomic weapons when an atomic bomb went off and exposed him to an enormous amount of gamma radiation. When he was exposed to the radiation, it turned him into a savage and extremely strong animal of a human being. Normally when Mr. Banner becomes enraged the Incredible Hulk is exposed and only when the Incredible Hulk calms down does he turn back into Bruce Banner. Although the Hulk's color has varied just a bit over the time that he has existed, the majority of the time he is the favorable and most popular green color. Whenever Bruce Banner turns into the Incredible Hulk, he is then capable of immense strength, minus the brains. Strong emotions such as anger, terror and grief are also triggers for...

...Aryan Shankar Catherine Thomas English I 2 November, 2015 Iron Man and its Role in Creating a ‘Positive Geek Culture’ Superheroes are everywhere these days. Although, the origin of superheroes can be traced back to the comic books of the 1930s and even earlier, they have been depicted in media like film, television shows, video games, radio broadcasts and graphic novels. They even find their place in apparels like t-shirts, sweatshirts, socks and underwear; stationery items like pencil boxes; accessories for electronic gadgets like cell phone covers and laptop skins; and various home furnishing items. Originally confined to a certain class of comic book fans, the popularity of superheroes has reached a wider audience with a lot of different people being happily associated with them. This phase of increasing infusion of superheroes into the mainstream culture started in the 1990s and the early part of the 21st century but it was only after the release of the film Iron Man that superheroes reached their present level of popularity. Therefore, it can be argued that Iron Man has led to the creation of what can be called, a ‘positive geek culture’. ‘Geek culture’, as it is popularly understood, has many different facets and it is not always associated with being a superhero fan. Geek culture includes interest in board games like Dungeons & Dragons, the film series Star Wars and martial arts films of the 1980s, and television series like Star Trek, Battlestar...

...A Modern Day Allusion The Elizabethan era, once filled with long dresses, courtship and theatre has now transitioned into a time when less clothing is considered better and with some teenagers, dating is a quick as a game of musical chairs, switching partners when the music stops. Teenagers are more interested in social media and texting than interacting with other people. There a two allusions that can be switched into Hamlet to allow it to appeal to a young and modern audience. Updating the term Termagant and Hercules could appeal to a more modern audience. Termagant was originally “a deity erroneously ascribed to Islam by medieval European Christians and represented in early English drama as a violent character.” This original allusion is used to describe a nasty or violent person and in Hamlet is it used in Act III Scene ii, before Hamlet performs his play. It is used in the context of “I would have such a fellow whipped for o'erdoing Termagant. It out-Herods Herod.” Hamlet was telling the actors not to overdo their performance and to not have violent outbursts. Many teenagers would not know what this word meant unless they had to look it up for a project. The word bully would be a better fit for a modern audience, because for years, teenagers and kids have been taught about the definition of a bully and what it means to bully another person. The new line would read as “I would have such a fellow whipped for o’erdoing a bully. It out-Herods Herod“ By making this replacement...
