...In Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca, the theme of identity is being searched for throughout the entire book. The spirit of the former, deceased mistress, Rebecca, looms over the entire mansion of Manderley. The dark nature of supernatural elements of surrounding nature add to the ominous appearance of the disheartened crew. Maxim, owner and master of Manderley, marries a new mistress who brings a different essence of of characteristics than the prior Rebecca. The new Mrs. de Winter never quite seems to be able to assume her new role of being a mistress. She has been thrown into a position, which she never dreamt of having, to where she has to live up to the “perfection”(I say this in quotes because Rebecca was not at all perfect) of Rebecca. In numerous instances, Mrs. de Winter does not plant herself as the leading mistress: hiding the broken glass ornament like a toddler and being connived by Mrs. Danvers, the only servant who was truly loyal to Rebecca, to wear the same dress as Rebecca to the elegant gala. Therefore, it took what seems like years for Mrs. de Winter to grasp the importance of her ability to stand up for her own dignity....

...A Public Declaration of Opinions: AKA My Manifesto I remember doing book reports on a book we got to choose, based on what we thought was good writing, but that was before I went to middle school and learned what “Required Reading” was. After reading Stranger Than Fiction, by Chuck Palahniuk, I was asked what I believed good writing was. I cannot say that I have ever been asked this question by a professor before. Students are told to read so many books, and some we like, but most we do not. Maybe it was the tone of the book we did not enjoy, or the font size being so small that it made us sigh in disgust every time we flipped the page. But, what do we think good writing is? Based on what I have read, I believe good writing involves vivid imagery, uncommon vocabulary use, a mapped out plan, and short chapters; however, good writing cannot be accomplished if the author changes their point of view. Why do people go on hikes, or climb rocks, or want offices with windows? For the view. Vivid imagery brings writing to life. As readers, we want to feel as if we are in the scene, feeling what the characters are feeling. Stephanie Meyer does a great job of this in her novel Twilight. Edward brings the main character, Bella, to a secret meadow: a sunny and beautiful heaven away from the rainy, overcast misery of the town they live in. When she is first brought to this meadow in the depths of the Washington forests, she illustrates that, “The large oak trees reached heights that...

...appreciated from way up in the air—and there is no evidence that the Nazca people, who inhabited the area between 300 B.C. and 800 A.D., invented flying machines. According to ancient alien theorists, the figures were used to guide spaceships as they came in for a landing, and the lines served as runways. Vimanas Many Sanskrit epics, which were written in India more than two millennia ago, contain references to mythical flying machines called vimanas. Pointing to similarities between descriptions of vimanas and reports by people who claim to have seen UFOs, ancient alien theorists have suggested that astronauts from other planets visited India during ancient times. The Moai of Easter Island The Polynesian island of Easter Island is famous for its “maoi”: the 887 giant human figures with enormous heads that guard its coastline. Roughly 500 years old, these monolithic statues stand 13 feet high and weigh 14 tons, but some are twice as tall and much heavier. How could human beings without sophisticated tools or knowledge...

...Uszyńska-Jarmoc, (2007), takes the form of a desire to improve, guard, and defend the self, and has an important influence on a child’s behavior. Early Development Saundra Moskoff, née Johnson, was born in 1968, a time in the United States fraught with racial unrest and violence. As an African American child, she was aware of the differences in the people she watched on TV, and saw in the books she enjoyed. Saundra’s parents exposed her to positive images of female African Americans such as writer May Angelou and performer Sheila Frazier. In addition to an African American inheritance, Saundra inherited the height of her tall Osage ancestors, and was much taller than her peers were. By the time Saundra was age 5, she was almost four-feet tall. Saundra found being tall more unbearable than being an African American. Her parents taught her how to adapt to new surroundings and helped build her self-esteem by encouraging her to smile, sit and stand straight, and look people in the eyes. Saundra’s parents ensured she observed them doing the same. Today Saundra is six feet, two inches tall and attributes her part-time modeling career to the lessons learned as a child. Family and Social Relationships Saundra’s maternal...

...spacious cabin ensures all are comfortable while traveling to their destination. The good fuel economy makes taking regular trips more affordable, and even an off-road adventure isn't off the books. Subaru recognizes drivers want a stylish vehicle for their family outings and has equipped the 2017 Subaru Forester near McComb Ms with exterior revisions that truly show how refined this vehicle can be. In addition, they have added more safety features to ensure each trip ends as pleasantly as it began, and the added sound-deadening features allow for more pleasant cruising. Subaru has opted to enhance their EyeSight safety system with the addition of blind-spot monitoring and lane departure warning. Furthermore, high-beam headlights can now be controlled automatically, and buyers may choose options such as reverse automatic braking and adaptive LED headlights. Some may wish to do so, yet others are perfectly content with the standard headlights and taillights which have been revised for this model year. Performance As our McComb MS Subaru Dealerships report, drivers love the acceleration offered by the Forester. Honestly, who wants to go slow when an adventure awaits at the other end of the journey? This vehicle only takes 6.3 seconds to go from zero to 60, and the turbo power allows it to stand out in the crossover segment. Braking isn't an issue either, as the Forester takes less time to go from 60mph to a full stop than the majority of competitors and does so with control. Off-road...

...EFFECTIVE DELEGATION ISSUES AND IMPLICATIONS FOR THE MILITARY BY OLOWU DAUDU YINI MALACHY DEPARTMENT OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION AHMADU BELLO UNIVERSITY, ZARIA Being a Paper Presented at the Departmental Seminar Organized by Department Of Business Administration Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria May, 2006 Introduction The Growth in size, functions and administrative procedures of the military have presented a challenge to the managers of the organisation. And like any organisation, the military has its objectives, which may be broad, specific, simple or complex. For these objectives to be successfully accomplished, there should be the delegation of authority and managerial responsibility for specific functions to agencies outside the central structure. This decentralization distributes authority to the smallest practical unit but at the same time keeps reasonable controls to ensure that all units are working toward the same organisational objectives. The objectives of the decentralization is to share the responsibility for making and/or implementing decision on public services with a larger number of actors, either within the same organisation (deconcentration) or different organisations (devolution) in the public sector or with actors outside of the state sector altogether. This paper, therefore, attempts to examine the concept of delegation, control and decision-making in organisations with particular...

...soon after their initial conquest of this area… Part of his plan to jump-start this company is to hire a CSU-DH grad as the grand poobah of HFE (and other duties as assigned). Your first few weeks are full of new assignments from Bill as well as requests for your new expertise. So, the majority of what follows will be in the form of a management briefing, slide show, or report, or memo. 9 questions plus 1 bonus question 1. Given the rapidly rising importance and pervasiveness of knowledge management, we could easily devote an entire course to information processing. As quality professionals we are often called upon to improve a process - and the result is the additional need for data collection or new "mental routines". Dr. Bill wants to become the guitar pick success story for 2011 and has hired you to take the skills you have learned in QAS 515 and assist him in bringing (dragging?) the processes and workforce into the 21st century. After your first week walking around both the plant and admin areas with a clipboard taking notes, several themes arise: • there are no computers – for stand-alone, process/machine control, or administration use • there is a Tayloristic job breakdown and about 3 times as many workers as needed • all of the production and lab equipment was built in the late 1920's and is well maintained, but single purpose • the office furniture and layout looks like a 1950’s TV show • everyone appears to be working steady, but no one appears...

...The Segway PT is a two-wheeled, self-balancing transportation device that consists primarily of a set of tall handlebars on top of two disc-like wheels. There are no chains or visible mechanical workings. Riders lean forward to move forward and back to move backward. Turning is done mechanically via hand controls. The device is driven by a quiet, nonpolluting electric motor and can travel up to 10 miles per hour. The name "Segway PT" stands for "Segway Personal Transporter. " The Segway was built in secrecy and was unveiled on December 3, 2001 , on the ABC program Good Morning America. The initial reaction to the Segway PT was enthusiastic. Venture capitalist John Doerr predicted that it would be as important as the Internet. Apple's Steve Jobs predicted that cities would be built around it. To cope with the expected demand for the product, Segway's factory in Bedford, New Hampshire, was designed to build up to 40,000 units per month. Initial sales were targeted at between 10,000 and 50,000 units during the first 12 months. But, after 21 months, only 6,000 units had sold. What went wrong? Feasibility Analysis While the Segway was a technological marvel, in retrospect there were fundamental flaws in both its product feasibility analysis and its market feasibility analysis. When reviewing Segway's prelaunch and postlaunch behavior, one has to wonder how so many critical issues seemingly weren't analyzed or were missed. It provides lessons for future entrepreneurs to be more...

...assumption has caused the world to ignore male victims, making violence against men one of the biggest problems. Denis Campbell, a designated reporter for the online newspaper “The Observer,” wrote that forty percent of domestic violence victims are male, or about two in five of all victims. It will continue to grow as long as we let it. I consider myself as a feminist. That is why domestic violence was my top research subject. I was under the impression that the only victims were women and men were just simply evil. However, when digging deeper into research I realized that violence against men is dangerously ignored and how the affects are the same. I now feel the need to report this and bring awareness. Starting on the journey of this new topic, I had many unanswered questions. How could a hefty, tall, strong man be victimized by a small, petite woman? The answer relates back to the lesson of “a man never hits a woman.” Yes, most men are capable of overpowering their companion; however, every gentleman knows never to hit a woman. Even if it means taking the abuse. This value also provides women with the upper hand. They can abuse and dictate without rebellion or a fight. Violence against men also branches out farther than just physical. A woman can just as easily use verbal attack and...

...BIGFOOT: LEGEND OR FACT? 2 There are many different legends and stories that have passed down from generation to generation. It is likely that everyone will have heard some type of legend told to him or her at some point in his or her life. Some legends are told and then fade into history. Some legends are kept alive as time passes and become so widespread that it touches everyone's life at some point. One legend that has caused decades of speculation is the legend of Bigfoot. The legend of Bigfoot has become widely popular in North America. It has even spawned similar legends told in other parts of the world. While most legends are told and brushed off as simply crazy stories, the legend of Bigfoot has caused much debate and investigation into the truth behind the stories of the giant ape-like animal. Many scientists have studied the supposed evidence of Bigfoot and the stories that have been told about the creature. For years, the research into the existence of Bigfoot has gone on with no conclusive evidence being found to prove the existence or non-existence of such an animal. As the questions remain, the legend of Bigfoot lives on and continues to grow from year to year. The stories and evidence provided in this paper are all from David Jenkins’ personal collection and experiences. David Jenkins was my zoology teacher in tenth grade, my biology teacher in eleventh grade, and finally my marine biology teacher my senior year. Mr. Jenkins has gone to church with my...

...REPORT ON COURT ROOM OBSERVATION. This report is based on my observations carried out in two Courts in England and Wales precisely in Manchester. The report is in two parts, one on civil jurisdiction and the other one on criminal jurisdiction. This visit has afforded me the opportunity of witnessing “law in action” different from “law in books”. I have also been able to compare both the civil and criminal process and proceedings. The two courts I visited are both in Manchester. The Crown court I visited is situated in an old building commissioned years ago whereas the magistrate court is situated in an ultra modern building commissioned not too long ago. I have read books and journals enumerating the differences between the judges and magistrates. This court room observation has given me he on the sport assessment of the differences between the two courts and many other questions that I will be addressing in the course of this report… As we were advised, my first visit to the courts (Magistrate and Crown Courts) was to find out about the time and the cases. I discovered that youth cases and family are not opened to the public and at this point, I was able to decide on the dates to attend the courts and the types of cases to observe. “The Magistrates’ courts are purely the courts of first instance”. The Magistrates in England and Wales are lay men without the knowledge of law and they are also referred to as “Justices of the Peace” but they are assisted by a Justice’ clerk...
