In March of 2015, CBC announced that the yearly Education Quality and Accountability Office exam (EQAO) was postponed for nearly 200,000 Ontarian students in grades three and six. Elementary school teachers refused to administer the test. They reasoned that it was not part of their work-to-rule action in their contract. Standardized testing has been a major political debate in the past years. It has not only caused a great debate, but also has questioned of whether or not standardize testing should continue to be a part of elementary students' curriculum. The key argument for continuing this drama is the idea that standardized tests are crucial in indicating a child's education quality. However, this is a mistake. At a general level, standardized achievement tests are able to reflect the information taught in class such as English and Mathematics. Conversely, this is where the similarity stops. There is a crucial mismatch between standardized testing and the information learned between teacher and student. Firstly, large corporations such as Pearson and McGraw Hill construct many standardized tests and hope to reflect the school's curriculum using a one size-fits-all test booklet. In addition, teachers are given the liberty to choose how to teach a class and what the focus of the general topics will be. In 2001, Porter and his colleagues preformed a case study and were able to witness these disparities. Using five common national standardized tests, they compared it to the content of grades 4-6 classes' and four frequently used textbooks. The result was that less than 50% of the material on the tests received the proper attention in textbooks. Because commonly used textbooks and student lectures are insufficient at preparing for the exam, a child's education quality should not be critiqued based on their test scores. The disparity between testing material and class material should be noted and the public should realize that standardized testing is ineffective as an indicator of a child's education …show more content…
Students from a higher socioeconomic background have a higher exposure level. For example if a question asked, "A fruit contains seeds. Which of the following are not fruits -- apple, celery, pumpkin, or orange?" The answer to the question is celery. This can be a simple question for a student who encountered each item on the list. However, students from poorer communities who attend schools in lower socioeconomic areas may have never seen celery or may have never carved opened a pumpkin. Additionally, these students have no support system outside of the classroom. The families cannot afford a tutor and a single teacher cannot keep up with the high attention demand every child needs. These students would be at a disadvantage not due to what they have learned in class, but because what they have not learned outside of class.
