...CASE STUDY: Alice Peterson An experienced elementary school teacher is having problems with a pre-first grade class in which every student brings unique (and difficult) problems into the classroom, leading her to wonder if she is reaching anyone. Alice Peterson drove to work mentally agonizing over the same dilemma that faced her every school day: how to help her students learn. Alice taught a class of prefers-grade children at the Mason Elementary School in Eastvale, a small town outside Chicago. This year was proving to be the most challenging and the most frustrating of Alice’s twenty-eight-year career. The Eastvale school district served a heterogeneous school population. More than 40 percent of the students were black or Hispanic, and about a quarter of the school population qualified for the free or reduced-cost lunch program. There were also many students from middle class or upper-middle class families. Three years ago the school district introduced a pre-first grade class in an attempt to serve developmentally latent children. Over the past ten years or so, the kindergarten curriculum had become more academic, with less attention paid to readiness and group social skills. For some children, an academic kindergarten was not the best preparation for formal schooling; they needed more time before they faced the demands of first grade. On the basis of testing and the recommendations of their kindergarten teacher, such children were...

...A laboratory information system (LIMS) is a software that allows you to manage samples and data to improve lab efficiency. Some of the key features that support a laboratory’s operations are data tracking support, flexible architecture and work flow. Security includes alarms and door locks also known as security codes. Alarms will need to be logged as well as logging the security codes on a protected system. This is so managers of a laboratory will know which alarms have been set off, security alarms are useful to be logged on to a LIMS as it may need to be used on an overview in a map layout of the laboratory, people will know where the alarms are located. A schematic map is needed in a laboratory as nay new employee’s or members of the laboratory will need to know where to go and where certain things are such as utilities (water, gas and electric) and fire exits in case of an emergency. Offices should be logged on a laboratory information system as every member of the laboratory information management system as every member of the laboratory will need to know whose office each one is, where every office is located in the laboratory. Heating systems are in the office as well as any vents that run through offices this is important as it can be logged on to a map of the building and is useful as this will allow oxygen to constantly be in a long supply for whoever is using the office. Space will need to be logged (M3) within the system as some activities may require more space...

...Classroom Observation Conducting classroom observations are very important to the prospective teacher. Observing helps show how experienced teachers manage their classroom. For this observation it was important to notice how the classroom was arranged, how the teacher interacted with the students, the teacher’s management style, and interview the teacher. Upon speaking to the principal about observing he assigned me to Mrs. Johnson’s third grade class, because she was the best organized. I was surprised when I walked into the class and it was not pristine and in perfect order. Shelves are organized with baskets but the baskets are overflowing with books. I was glad to see that she actually used her classroom. My observations on the teacher’s management style, interaction with students, arrangement, mutual respect, enforcing and reinforcing classroom expectations, and preventative procedures and activities. The day I observed Mrs. Johnson’s classroom was a good day because not only did I get to see the interaction between her and her students she also had the other third grade class for a period and I got to see her interaction with students she does not have on a daily basis. She was very positive and never raised her voice once. If a student got too loud or was breaking rules she would call the students name and tell them to take a letter. She is very respectful with her students calling them ladies...

...breaks that they've received while working in their retail jobs are mandatory based on the companies that they work for, not mandated by federal law. Up to 75% adults who are in the throws of their careers don't take their lunch breaks away from their desks, and therefore aren't receiving a break of any sort away from their desks (“We're Not Taking Enough Lunch Breaks. Why That's Bad For Business”, 2015). Although it may appear as if employees are getting more work done since they are at their desks more, they are in fact getting less work done by being less productive and less creative than they could be with a break. Creativity Being stuck at a desk all day is a terrible thing. Limited change of scenery and limited interactions with your co-workers; essentially, there is no time for your mind to escape the perils that have become working at your desk. This lack of variety at work is part of the problem facing corporations that complain that their workers aren't creative enough. According to John Cleese in a speech on creativity, sometimes you just need to do something else and suddenly you'll have a eureka moment. Mr. Cleese gives several ways in which we can be creative. Although they don't center around a nine to five desk job, they are still eye opening and relevant to all walks of life (“John Cleese on Creativity”). Productivity In addition to stunted creativity at work, another downside of not taking proper breaks while working is a drop in productivity. Due to...

...Creating a Literacy Environment Katherine Blevins February 8, 2014 ECH 425 Bonnie Barrett Classrooms come in all shapes and sizes. There are things that have to be in a classroom and things that just make the classroom complete. Every classroom has to have a literacy rich environment; this is hard to show in a picture so I will attempt to explain how a classroom should look and the things that need to be in one. Pre-school rooms are much different from others so we will start with a pre-school room. Pre-school classrooms have to have different centers such as a library with many different kinds of books. This area should have child sized furniture and bean bags for the children to get comfortable and enjoy reading. There has to be a kitchen area and dramatic play area. Sometimes these areas are put together because they go together and the children can play “house”. In these areas there should be books about cooking, food, and the way different cultures dress. This can help the children to look at the pictures and copy them in their play. Another area is blocks with trucks and other building items. In this area there should be books about construction, building, transportation, and architecture. There should also be a computer area for the students to utilize with programs that are age appropriate, a lot of times the HATCH computers are in these rooms because they are loaded with many programs for this age group. Science and Discovery is another area where there should...

...With respect to a standing army, I believe there was not a member in the federal convention who did not feel unworthy at such an institution. What remedy then could be provided?-Leave the country defenceless? In order to provide for our defence, and exclude the dangers of a standing army, the general defence is left to those who are the objects of defence. It is left to the militia who will suffer if they become the instruments of tyranny. The general government must have power to call them forth when the general defence requires it. In order to produce greater security, the state governments are to appoint the officers." Nor is there any clear cut reference to restricting the power to voluntary enlistments that the power should apply in peace as well as war; that there should be no specific limitation of numbers to be enlisted. 3 suggestion that the power embraced "the customary and ordinary modes practised, in other governments "Congress have also the power-given them to raise and support armies, without any limitation as to numbers, and without any restriction in time of peace." (I One of the grievances set forth in our Declaration of Independence as a justification for overthrowing government was: "He has kept among us, in times of peace, standing armies * * *" In England there had been a long opposition to standing armies. They were condemned in the Petition of Right in 1628 and the Bill of Rights; they were branded as dangerous and contrary...

...destiny is tied to the land, as much a part of us as we are of it. Others say fate is woven like a cloth, so that one’s destiny intertwines with many others. It’s the one thing we search for, or fight to change. Some never find it, but there are those who are led” (Chapman). Those are the words of Merida, the heroine of one of Pixar’s latest films, Brave. The Disney production may be quite recent, but the overall moral of its tale is certainly nothing new. Instead, it merely reinforces two simple but powerful themes: it implies that pride and a reckless wish to change one’s fate may result in a recipe for potential disaster. This paper will explore through a semiotic study how its three most important symbols, the torn bond, the bear, and the standing stones render the tale of the courageous tomboy a cheerful but cautionary one. As the princess of the Scottish Kingdom of DunBroch, custom holds that she is to be married to a prince from one of the neighboring clans. Throughout approximately the first half of the film, her mother Queen Elinor tries to prepare her for her marriage and for the day that she herself is to become queen. Unfortunately for both mother and daughter, Merida has no desire to be married to any of the suitors in the film or to accept the responsibilities of the crown just yet, and thus creates a tension with her parents that is all too common among those her age, which is amplified by her position as a princess. After succession of brief scenes depicting Elinor...

...Abstract: The purpose of this experiment was to verify the relationship between frequencies, wave length and wave velocity of a transverse wave on a string, as well as the relationship between the spring tension and the number of standing waves formed. Two different strings used in this experiment are white and black in colour; the µ1 value calculated for the white string is 2.73 x 10-3 ±0.00055kg/m with an uncertainty of ±8.2932 x 10-5 kg/m while the µ2 value calculated for the black string is 1.38 x 10-3 kg/m with an uncertainty of ±8.6492 x 10-5 kg/m. However, the actual linear mass density µ0 of the white spring calculated is 2.87x10-3kg/m; compared to the experimental linear mass density µ1, the difference in error was 4.88%, however, the mass of the black spring was too small to be weighted therefore the actual linear mass density µ0 was unable to be calculated, so cannot be compared to the experimental linear mass density µ2. Introduction: A wave can be described as a disturbance that carries energy and travels through a medium form one location to another. Waves can be classified into two types, transverse waves and longitudinal waves. This experiment was based on transverse wave and can be described by the position of the particles at a particular time as well as how the position changes with time. Transverse wave can also be considered as a wave that remains at constant position. Wave produced by a vibrator travels down a string and reflects...

...------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------- Microwave an RF Supplementary Project ------------------------------------------------- Equivalent Impedance of an Antenna Introduction: Antenna impedance is a measure of the resistance to an electrical signal in an antenna. Many factors have an impact on an antenna’s ability to transmit a signal, including the environment that the antenna is in and the design and composition of the antenna. Understanding antenna impedance is important when designing components that connect an antenna to a receiver or transmitter. The ratio to voltage current, which is equal to antenna impedance, is expressed in ohms. The antenna impedance represents the power that is absorbed by the antenna as well as the power that is dispersed by it as it comes into contact with electromagnetic waves. Voltage and Current Relationship: Antenna impedance relates the voltage to the current at the input to the antenna. Let us assume that the antenna has an impedance of 50 ohms. And if a sinusoidal voltage is applied at the antenna terminals with amplitude of 1 volt, then the current will have amplitude of I=VR=150=0.02 A. Since the impedance is a real number, the voltage is in phase with the current. Alternatively suppose the impedance is given by complex number say Z=50+j50 ohms. If Z=50+j50, then the impedance has the magnitude equal to: 502+502=70.71 The phase will be equal to: tan-1ImZReZ=45° ...
