Have you ever wanted to do something small in order to make a big difference? Like a social issue? Well In the New York Times Upfront Article,Star-Spangled Protest, By Carl Stoffers. It describes how one man, NFL Quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s protest of the star Spangled banner, and also how it is having a larger impact on the nation and its people. It talks about how a simple protest for one idea can have a large impact on the world around us. It continues on through the use of many ideas and cause and effect strategies to inform the reader on the protest of Colin Kaepernick kneeling on the ground during the National Anthem of the United States of America. It throws around the ideas that Americans are bound to ideas and concepts that hold the main ideas …show more content…

Stoffers then moves on to reaching into the past and talking about some of the tradition of the Star-Spangled Banner. He talks about how Francis Scott Keys wrote the anthem during the War of 1812. He talks about the history of the National Anthem first played in MLB games during World War II, during a strong surge of Patriotism throughout the country. He talks a little on how it is a pre game ritual of all of the 4 major sports leagues, the NHL, MLB, NFL and the NBA. He then switches thoughts and continues to talk about previous history and intensities of Similar protest, such as at the 1986 Olympics in Mexico City, Champion Sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos Raised their fists during the National Anthem, in protest of Black Disobrance and the Black Panthers. This is important becuase he then ties it back to the main idea that a small protest can have a profound impact on those around us. He then wraps up the article by talking about the issue and tieing it in with some of today's celebrities such as Lebron James and how he talks about this is

Athletes Gone Too Far

...When is it too far? A U.S. army soldier is getting ready to enjoy a basketball game. They used to play basketball when they were younger. They feel proud as everyone stands to salute the flag, they feel proud to serve this country. Until they see one of the players on his favorite team not saluting the flag, but sitting during the national anthem! He is astonished. Why is he not respecting the flag? This has gone through many minds, soldier and non, when someone protests the flag. This should not happen. The anthem is a time for respect and patriotism, nothing else. Hence, athletes have gone too far targeting the flag. Athletes have gone too far because the anthem is meant for patriotism and not an opinion on politics, we are saluting our country and not our politics, and Kaepernick should have had a different target....

Living History

...___________________________ LIVING HISTORY Hillary Rodham Clinton Simon & Schuster New York • London • Toronto • Sydney • Singapore To my parents, my husband, my daughter and all the good souls around the world whose inspiration, prayers, support and love blessed my heart and sustained me in the years of living history. AUTHOR’S NOTE In 1959, I wrote my autobiography for an assignment in sixth grade. In twenty-nine pages, most half-filled with earnest scrawl, I described my parents, brothers, pets, house, hobbies, school, sports and plans for the future. Forty-two years later, I began writing another memoir, this one about the eight years I spent in the White House living history with Bill Clinton. I quickly realized that I couldn’t explain my life as First Lady without going back to the beginning―how I became the woman I was that first day I walked into the White House on January 20, 1993, to take on a new role and experiences that would test and transform me in unexpected ways. By the time I crossed the threshold of the White House, I had been shaped by my family upbringing, education, religious faith and all that I had learned before―as the daughter of a staunch conservative father and a more liberal mother, a student activist, an advocate for children, a lawyer, Bill’s wife and Chelsea’s mom. For each chapter, there were more ideas I wanted to discuss than space allowed; more people to include than could be named; more places visited than could be described...
