...1. Discuss competition in the search industry. When it comes to the competition in the search industry the three companies that come to mind first have to be Microsoft, Google, and Yahoo. Two years ago they ranked as the most visited sites in the world. Google was number one with 147 million visits a month. Facebook was second with 132 million, and Yahoo was close behind with 130 million. The Search industry is a true conundrum in and of itself because of the dynamic among that top three I spoke of. Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft are each other’s competition, but at one point or another they have actually worked together. Granted the only reason for this was for individual benefit, NOT for brotherhood or solidarity. Even so, that is still pretty much unheard of on any other industry. Early on in Google’s infancy, Yahoo actually was a customer of its search engines. Of course when Yahoo broke away from them, there was some legal wrangling over patents, and Microsoft actually tried to actually takeover Yahoo some years ago. Well, eventually Yahoo reached an agreement with Google to host their search ads. This alliance gained Yahoo nearly one billion dollars in revenue. But, like every time any of these companies try to play nice it failed again. Google pulled out after receiving a warning from the U.S. Justice Department that their partnership could possibly violate antitrust statutes. Essentially, over the course of their existence Google and Microsoft...

...Personal Responsibility is linked to College Success Gen/200 July 1, 2013 Jeremy NeVille Personal Responsibility is linked to College Success As George Washington Carver said, “Ninety-nine percent of all failures come from people who have a habit of making excuses.” (LeadershipNow, n.d.). Although, people are naturally unable to take responsibility, college success is attainable when an individual accepted personal responsibility. With an early behavioral intervention set at a young age, academic success is easily adaptable and reachable. Continuing higher education such as attending college is an individual’s personal responsibility of choice. Higher Education offers a place for learning and practicing skills such as; setting goals, manage time, resolve conflicts, and learn new skills. Recognizing our potential can advance our ability to gain lifetime-acquired skill for success in college. Accepting personal responsibility is to own up to his or her mistakes. When an individual accepted personal responsibility of his or her actions, he or she takes full control of all the decision-making. Pointing fingers or making excuses for any circumstances are not a trait of an individual who takes personal responsibilities for his or her life. Acknowledging your own mistakes is an admirable trait of a responsible individual. In every family household there are different sets of values and approach on teaching their children personal responsibilities. These children are taught...

...David Cook founded Blockbuster video in 1985, opening the first store in Dallas Texas and has grown to become the world's number one video chain. Mr. Cook took the idea of video rental and improved it by creating the video superstore concept. Many family-owned video rental stores could not compete against Blockbuster' stores. Blockbuster stores were highly visible stand-alone structures that appealed to customers. Blockbuster His stores had a wider selection of videos and offered longer hours of operation. He focused on creating a family image for his stores by including a children's section and excluding adult movies. He also made it possible for busy people and people with children the opportunity to view movies for a longer period by starting the 3 day rental period. In 1986, Mr. Cook sold 33% of Blockbuster to h, m & Flynn and in 1987; he decided to leave the company making Mr. Huizenga CEO (Smiley, 2010). Mr. Huizenga had experience growing small companies but no experience in retail, so he hired the best managers who were capable of developing a retail chain. Under Mr. Huizenga's leadership Blockbuster experienced major growth. By 1992, Blockbuster had over 3,000 stores (1,000 franchise and 2,000 company owned). Blockbuster had established 3 operating divisions to manage functional activities. These three divisions cut cost for the company by eliminating the outsourcing of these jobs. Years ago, almost everyone who rented a video got it from Blockbuster or a local video...

...Hi Kevin- It’s been too long, old friend. How are you doing? Hope Sara and the dogs are doing well. I wanted to write you and fill you in on some big news: I got promoted last month! NCO has changed a lot since you left, but I was promoted to Operations Supervisor. I took over the Florida Department of Education and Illinois Student Assistance Commission contracts, and even the Education Credit Management Corporation contract, as well. I have to say, it has been eventful taking over my own team. Trying to lead a new team of people who knew me as a peer before my promotion has been an uphill battle thus far. Luckily, however, this promotion has coincided nicely with some leadership readings I have had in my Organizational Behavior class in my MBA Program. I know you were always big on “self-help” periodicals, so I thought you would be interested in hearing about some of the things I have learned, which has helped me classify not only myself and my “work-ons,” but also my team members as I move forward growing my team. The best article I have read is called “Level 5 Leadership.” It has really helped me understand what kinds of characteristics I should have in my new role and how to apply them. The concept is pretty simple: there are five levels of leadership, all building upon the stage below it. According to the article, it is very rare for a leader to be a level 5 leader. Only 11 of the 1435 Fortune 500 companies that the author studied had a CEO whom he classified as a level...

The stoppage has allowed him to avoid sustaining any more damage after having been knocked out and he will live to fight another day. Almost as long as there has been civilization there has been a dark and competitive side to mankind. This dark side is often what fuels our competitive nature, and causes the creation of almost gladiatorial like sports to test or strength and abilities against others. The roman’s had their gladiators, and in the modern age we have sports such as MMA. While there are a few sports whose all out brutality have caused them to be scrutinized by lawmakers and medical professionals none have had the uphill battle of mixed martial arts. Mixed martial arts, or MMA, are just as its name implies a mix of many styles of combat from the oriental martial arts to boxing, wrestling, and ju jit su, which is a form of submission grappling. And while MMA is a dangerous sport in its own right it is no more dangerous than the more widely accepted sports of boxing and professional...

...with the securities produced was ignored. Initially, the securities that were built were not expected to fail. When the home loan industry began to breakdown it became clear that something needed to be done. Legislation that the financial industry was trying to avoid was necessary. The Dodd-Frank Act was enacted as a result. Introduction The financial industry is currently facing a number of challenges such as poor investment strategies, improper activities by lenders and poor ethical standards within investment companies. Over the last 3 years more than 200 financial institutions within the United States have ceased to exist because of the 2008-2009 credit crises. Restoring confidence in the financial environment has been an uphill battle since the credit crises began. Today banks that were not able to sustain operations are being acquired by others that are more stable which causes the long-standing institutions to become more risky. As a result the acquisitions are dramatically affecting the remaining banks and further weakening the finance industry. Banks have been searching for ways to boost cash flows with new regulations in place; most recently by raising fees for previously free services. This paper will examine the history of how the credit crisis began and the new legislation put into place to protect consumers from the destructive lending practices that caused current economic conditions. A Brief History In order to understand how financial...

...Many decades ago, the woman’s role was a housewife and mother, and women were not entering the workforce, however, the role of women has drastically changed. Until modern time, legal and cultural practices, combined with longstanding religious and educational conventions restricted women’s entry and participation in the workforce. In today’s society, women populate approximately 47 percent of the United States labor force. While women in the workforce is a modern phenomenon, it would not be possible without the pioneers of the Women’s Rights Movement; however there are still challenges women face, such as gender discrimination. Gender discrimination is treating individuals differently in their employment specifically because the individual is a woman or a man. Currently the federal law, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, protects individuals from discrimination based upon sex or gender. This law makes it illegal for an employer to discriminate against individuals because of their gender in the following actions: hiring, firing, and other terms and conditions of employments, such as promotions, raises, and other job opportunities. Title VII covers all private employers, state and local government, and educational institutions that employ more than 15 individuals. Even though gender discrimination is illegal for companies to discriminate against, it seems to still be an issue in the 21st century. The focus of this research paper is on gender discrimination in the...

... is a form of direct sales in which individuals, known as distributors, sell products, usually over the telephone or go door to door. Distributors recruit other distributors who do the same. Each distributor makes money on the products that their recruits sell in addition to the money they make from their own sales. The idea is that eventually the original distributor can just sit back and let the distributors he recruited make money for him. For a fee, usually between $25 and $100, these MLM companies will sell people a distributor kit that includes informational brochures about the product they will be selling, price lists, order forms and an instructional manual. Basics of MLM When it started in the 1930s, MLM was a legitimate business practice that afforded a way for small businesses to get their products to consumers in rural areas that had no access to these products. The idea was much like that of the traveling salesman. At the time, the products sold themselves and the percentage that went to the owner(s) was regarded as an award to those who built the organization. The focus remained on the product. MLM today Today, with the advent of technology giving us the ability to travel far distances, there is no need for these "distribution systems." Therefore, the focus has shifted from the product to recruiting new people to buy into the program or to sell low-quality products for high-quality prices (for example, selling a face cream that costs $4 for $25). The idea...

...About a month after we started Y Combinator we came up with the phrase that became our motto: Make something people want. We've learned a lot since then, but if I were choosing now that's still the one I'd pick. Another thing we tell founders is not to worry too much about the business model, at least at first. Not because making money is unimportant, but because it's so much easier than building something great. A couple weeks ago I realized that if you put those two ideas together, you get something surprising. Make something people want. Don't worry too much about making money. What you've got is a description of a charity. When you get an unexpected result like this, it could either be a bug or a new discovery. Either businesses aren't supposed to be like charities, and we've proven by reductio ad absurdum that one or both of the principles we began with is false. Or we have a new idea. I suspect it's the latter, because as soon as this thought occurred to me, a whole bunch of other things fell into place. Examples For example, Craigslist. It's not a charity, but they run it like one. And they're astoundingly successful. When you scan down the list of most popular web sites, the number of employees at Craigslist looks like a misprint. Their revenues aren't as high as they could be, but most startups would be happy to trade places with them. In Patrick O'Brian's novels, his captains always try to get upwind of their opponents. If you're upwind, you decide...

...• In this case Deloitte & Touche Consulting Group was tasked to come in and consult with SKS Manufacturing, an auto supplier, in order to fix their inventory problems along with other issues the company was facing. Maria Chen would lead part of the team for her first time on this 12-week engagement, but would in occur some difficulties throughout the first 6 weeks of the project. The Deloitte team has a lot of work to do before the end of the engagement in order stabilize the company and prepare them for a more radical long term project that plans to “reengineer” their business process. Most of the responsibility for the slow start on the project is resting on Chen’s shoulders due to the choices she has made during the first half of this engagement. Why does SKS need Deloitte’s services? Would you have approached the improvement problem in the same way as Deloitte in terms of defining the problem and work planning? SKS needs Deloitte’s services for a number of reasons with the main influence being that they were having a cash flow problem, and they didn’t have the experience or manpower to address this problem themselves. As there were a number of unfinished components sitting between presses and “‘split-batches’” making the production shop “a little chaotic”, their whole process scheduling likely had issues. Additionally, they were having difficulty maintaining acceptable levels of customer service by being late to ship a significant proportion of the orders...

While working at Edison’s company Ford came up with machine called Ford Quadricycle, ran by internal internal combustion engine and in 1899 Ford founded the Detroit Automobile Company. Company soon failed and after few other unsuccessful attempts Ford finally formed Ford Motor, a first automobile manufacturer, company in 1903. In the beginning of car industry, a time when the technology was completely new, 40% of American cars were powered by steam, while 38% were electric and 22% had gas engines. So, in the beginning of the automobile industry it was really unclear which direction in will turn. Steam engine, internal combustion engine and electricity had almost equal starting positions to become a standard for powering cars. Even at the time with inventions of Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla electricity may be even considered a more probable outcome. Although, back in it’s birth, cars were considered an unpractical thing and available only for rich people. Henry Ford had a vision of producing an affordable, cheap and mass produced car. In 1908 he came up with Ford Model T which became a huge success and heightened company and whole industry itself to unbelievable heights allowing Ford company to...

Initial whispers of the Nexus will be floated out roughly a year before intended release to start conversation amid consumers. As the date draws closer, social media (blogs/review/previews) will be used to drum up additional attention. In the quarter leading up to release, TV commercials and magazine ads will kick into high gear to complete the frenzy generation for the “iPad killer.” Upon initial release, advertising will slow down long enough to show how the Nexus is taking the 7 inch tablet market by storm. 2.0 Situation Analysis The Nexus is the new face in the tablet market and faces an uphill battle as it competes against well-known and proven products like the Kindle Fire. It must set itself apart from the competition more in the area of price point. Once set aside from the more expensive competition, consumers can see the benefits gained by choosing the Nexus over a simply ‘cheap’ tablet. There are several macro-environmental elements that need to be considered like income, demographics and available technologies. The Nexus will not look to target high...

...1. Complex question but simple understanding. My daughter has a way of coming up with awkward question and at times you are baffled with their unexpected questions. One such thing happens to me sometimes back. The T.V was on but I wasn’t really watching, my mind was plastered on the meeting that I was going to be held tomorrow, but my daughter’s curiosity had the better of me. It was 19:30 and during the news report it was inevitable that the PM had to be mentioned. My daughter precipitously looked at me with a puzzle face and asked “Dad, what is a Prime Minister.” It took me sometimes before I could response; my daughter was only nine years old. I tried to explain that a Prime Minister is a leader of a group of individuals who takes decision for all people in a country and ensure people live in peace, harmony and gets all the need we require. My daughter looked at me and said “So you are the Prime Minister” Great thinking. Yes as a matter of fact I am the Prime Minister of my house; I ensure peace, harmony and get all the needs for my family. From there on it was much easier to carry on the explanation. I am the Prime Minster of my house and there is another Prime Minster of the country in which there are many, many houses. Simple understanding for a complex question. Progressively when we grow up we are surrounded with sophisticated and contemporary thinking. With the passage of time unknowingly we lose our creativity and simplicity. In our complicated...
