...Research Case Study: Vodafone's Youth Market | | INTRODUCTION This case study will explain how the highly competitive telecommunications market lead Vodafone to set up an on-going 'panel' of respondents to give them a greater understanding of the youth market. THE CLIENT Vodafone is probably the biggest success story of the telecommunications market, becoming a household name with a penetration of 29% (TNS Telecoms panel Q3 2001) of the mobile phone market. Vodafone's media and planning agency, OMD UK plays an important strategic role in terms of researching the commercial market. THE CHALLENGE Operating in such a highly competitive industry meant that Vodafone had to look at new ways of researching how it could best profit from the hugely competitive youth market. The youth market is defined as anyone aged between 16-24 years old. Currently 90% of all 16-24 year olds own a mobile phone in the UK, amounting to 6.1m people in the UK. THE SOLUTION OMD UK, along with 2CV Research, recruited a panel of volunteers who receive monthly questionnaires over a long-term period in order to build up a profile of habits, attitudes and opinions of the young Vodafone user. The panel is made up of 200 respondents, all of whom must have an email address and a mobile phone (this is 85% of the youth market), and is maintained by 2CV. Questions sent out every month cover a whole range of areas, not just telecommunications. The idea is to build a very comprehensive picture of...

...Krystal Bante Case Study Chapter 2 1. In the beginning, Pandora tried to get music subscribers by giving people 10 free hours, then asking them to pay $36 a month after that for the service. Of course no-one was willing to pay so much for a service that they could get for free by switching on an FM radio. After that model failed they tried several other options until they decided to use the “freemium” model they are using today. With a freemium service the basic service is available for everyone for free, but with strict limitations in bandwidth and ads between songs which results in a lower quality listening experience. The premium service is priced at just $36 a year, 1/12 of their previous asking price. Three dollars a month is much easier for a consumer to justify. The premium service offers higher bandwidth songs and no advertising. 2. What Pandora does for its customers is provide access to music through the “Music Genome Project.” This project was started by the founders of Pandora and offers a way to classify music so that similar music by different artists will group together into what they call a personalized radio station. The music is evaluated by professional musicians for genre, and then within each genre 200-500 different data points are set for each song by the music professional. A function is used to identify the distance between songs so that similar songs can be included in a customer's playlist. A user can apply additional weights to promote or demote...

...what is being learned to everyday life. Therefore I believe that young children’s understanding of literacy as meaningful and purposeful, and not merely an abstract skill to be learned, is a critically important part of learning to communicate, read and write. For my case study I have decided to look at the following questions and observe these through different role play and teacher lead activities in the classroom. What types of scaffolding techniques enhances emergent literacy skills in a bi lingual environment? How can a positive attitude towards writing be encouraged? Section 2 Briefly outline your proposed methods and sites of data generation and your proposed methods of sampling During this case study project participants will be expected to answer a series of questions about their feelings and understanding of literacy. Participants will also be expected to take part in role play activities and literacy exercises during the course of the study. During the study, participants will also be asked to complete and partake in specific writing exercises. At the end of the study participants will be asked a second set of questions to try and establish their learning and outcome after taking part in the study. All of the procedures that will be introduced are experimental and will only be observed to see what significance it might show with regard to emergent literacy skills. The writing and drawing exercises will be collected from students at the end of each session. This...

...Burning Down the House: A Case Study in Forensic Instrumental Analysis by Adam M. Boyd and Randolph K. Larsen III Chemistry and Biochemistry St. Mary’s College of Maryland As Dr. Marie Stanforth steered her cumbersome suv into an unoccupied space at the scene of the latest fire in upstate Michigan, she instantly recognized the address. It was the current residence of her ex-husband. Yet, with the same calm and collected demeanor with which she approached every crime scene she ever visited, Dr. Stanforth confidently opened the door of her car and walked purposefully towards the extinguished blaze. Her boots crunched through a thin layer of snow as she trudged toward the scene. The record cold—the coldest morning to date that winter—gave rise to a light snow slowly blanketing the entire state for the first time that year. Marie marveled at how snow seemed to cover everything in a forgiving white veil. “Poor jerk,” she thought to herself as she approached the smoldering blaze with her hands tucked in the pockets of her heaviest parka. “I wonder where he’s going to live now.” Before she reached the scene, however, she was met by her partner, Adley. “So what happened?” she dryly asked Adley as she tried to maneuver closer to the extinguished blaze. “There was a fire,” Adley recounted. “There was a real bad fire.” “Thanks for the update, partner,” Marie laughed as she put her hand on Adley’s shoulder. “Let’s have a look,” she added as she tried to push her way past Adley’s outstretched...

...SOLUTION TO CASE STUDIES CASE: 1 “NATIONAL AIR EXPRESS” CASE: 2 “MINIT-LUBE, INC.” CHAPTER # 1 “OPERATIONS AND PRDUCTIVITY” CASE STUDY NATIONAL AIR EXPRESS 1. Is the productivity measure of shipments per truck still useful? Are there alternatives that might be effective? Answer: Productivity of company can be measured by the number of stops covered by each driver. This way the amount of services can be measured on every day basis and with the area covered by each driver. So the company can tell how much area has been covered by a driver in one day. This way productivity can be assessed in a measurable way. It can be formulized as: Productivity= NoSDrv Where, NoS = Number of Stops Drv = Driver 2. What if anything, can be done to reduce the daily variability in pickup call-ins? Can the driver be expected to be the several locations at once at five pm? Answer: This can be done by load balancing over the specified time duration. By load balancing I mean that we divide the crowded hours to reduce the pressure on peak time. Usually most of the telecommunication companies offer promotions at the night time when the network is not crowded so people only for important calls can use and benefit from the network and it does not affect the businesses by doing so. Problem shows that most of the calls are around 5 p.m. so the promotional strategy can be applied to reduce the load. 3. How should package pick up performance be measured are standards useful...

...Assessment Centre > Introduction | Assessment Centre has a variety of definitions and these are based on its methodology of assessing a candidate’s performance and aptitude. Trained Assessors observe a group of candidates performing a variety of aptitude diagnostic procedures which provide specific information on the abilities and developmental capacity of each applicant. An Assessment Centre is actually a process applicants take part in and is not specific to any one location. Its popularity is also evident in staff growth plans where it is usually known as a Development Centre. These procedures are designed to ensure employee investment is maximised for both the organisation and the individual. Whilst the general process is very similar to Assessment Centres the subtle difference is that at a Development Centre you will be given feedback immediately and work with the assessor to agree a future plan. Many organisations use the expertise of an HR consultant to design the exercises to meet their specific role requirements and then to conduct the actual testing and assessment of candidates. These services come with a significant cost and that is why you will increasing face testing through an Assessment Centre as you apply for higher-level strategic and technical roles. The length of an Assessment Centre will vary from half-a-day to two full days and may be held on the employer’s premises, often within their own training facilities or on the premises of the organisations Human...
