...Statistics is defined by Bennett, Briggs, & Triola (2009), as “the science of collecting, organizing, and interpreting data” (p. 1). Almost every profession uses statistics in some way to guide in making good decisions based on current research. The nursing profession relies heavily on current research to guide patient care with the integration of evidenced-based practice. Statistics provide valuable information to caregivers to help them understand, plan, evaluate, and improve the quality of patient care. In the acute care hospital setting there are ongoing measurements of such things as patient satisfaction, hand washing compliance rates, catheter acquired urinary tract infections, and central access infection rates, just to name a few. The collection of this data involves descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, and levels of measurements. Acute care hospitals use descriptive statistics in many ways. Descriptive statistics describes raw data in the form of samples or graphs (Bennett, Briggs, & Triola, 2009). One area in which they are used in the hospital is to evaluate hand washing compliance of health care providers. According to Vincent (2003), nosocomial infections occur in approximately 30% of patients in the intensive care setting and are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Research shows that effective hand washing can prevent many hospital acquired infections (Vitez, 2010). In the hospital setting, hand washing compliance is monitored...

It is suggested that specificity should be interpreted statistically, as a function of term use rather than of term meaning. The effects on retrieval of variations in term specificity are examined, experiments with three test collections showing, in particular, that frequently-occurring terms are required for good overall performance. It is argued that terms should be weighted according to collection frequency, so that matches on less frequent, more specific, terms are of greater value than matches on frequent terms. Results for the test collections show that considerable improvements in performance are obtained with this very simple procedure. Exhaustivity and specificity We are familiar with the notions of exhaustivity and specificity: exhaustivity is a property of index descriptions, and specificity one of index terms. They are most clearly illustrated by a simple keyword or descriptor system. In this case the exhaustivity of a document description is the coverage of its various topics...

...Information Systems and Software Applications BIS219 05/05/11 Information Systems and Software Applications Software applications are computer software programs specifically designed to help individual users or businesses perform specific functions such as accounting, data entry, organize statistical analysis, record trends, security, etc. The definition of information system or management information system (MIS) is the planning, development, management and use of information technology tools to help people perform all tasks relating to information processing and management. Information systems use specific software applications as their “technology tools” to perform certain tasks or information processing. Information systems and software applications are used in specific departments of a business such as marketing, accounting, and human resources. Marketing departments or firms use geographic information systems (GIS) to gather information pertaining to where and how they should market their good or service. GIS’s gather information like population size, average income of the population, and competitive business in radius to potential site locations. This information is used to plan where they should open a business or how and where they could direct their advertising. This information is put together and simplified using charts and symbols to help marketing firms make better and quicker decisions. Different examples of software applications would include web design...

...The Contribution of Enterprise Systems An enterprise system is classified as a system of integrated application-software packages that use data storage and transmission to support the flow of information, reporting, and analytics in the company as well as in some cases it is used outside of the company by colleagues and clients. Enterprise systems manage the flow of information relevant to those within the company as well as those outside of the company that have permission to access certain information. If a company has multiple lines of products and information that is relevant to all products such as statistical data that needs to be shared with all people within the company, an enterprise system exists to enable the sharing of information. An enterprise system provides as single system central to the organization which ensures that the information can be shared across all management and functional levels Enterprise systems are also invaluable with elimination of problems with information fragmentation which can be caused by having multiple information systems in an organization. It does this by creating a standard data structure. Typical information systems are housed in data centers and would run enterprise software as well as include application such as; content management systems that would cross organizational borders. Enterprise systems provide value for increasing operational efficiency, as well as provide wide information to help managers make informed and effective...

...connects enterprise applications. The middleware lies between the operating system and the enterprise application. It lies on each side of a distributed computer system network. Middleware supports sophisticated and distributed computer software applications. Any application between the computer kernel and user applications is considered to be a middleware. The most important aspect of the middleware is that it enables communication and input and output of the developers. Middleware becomes the link between the os-ware and the application software. This aspect of the middleware makes it possible for the applications to borrow the services of middleware. On the other hand, the middleware uses network layer services operating system (Myerson, 2002). Types of middleware Middleware gets used as a hybrid, public, or private. The best way to understand middleware is to look at some specific examples. The examples do not get built on any platform. However, they can be incorporated into cloud computing (Mohammed, 2005). Some common examples are Message-oriented middleware The infrastructural middleware supports sending and receiving messages in the distributed applications environment. According to Serein (1999) it helps to disburse applications to various other platforms. It eases the work of creating software applications to get incorporated in several operating Figure 2: Message oriented middleware Transaction middleware The middleware has applications like transaction...

...software, that marketing software can provide are analyzing, planning, producing, and measuring software. In conclusion- software application and information systems are superior tools for many small and large businesses. Firms benefit by saving time money that otherwise would be spent on traditional labor. In addition, information systems provide all the necessary information to employees in a faster and efficient manner. In general, information systems and software application are used to accomplish the most vital of a business’s financial needs. hardware, communications devices, network, people, and specific tasks. The form of operation is very similar to any other systems, which requires the inputs from users by keying in commands and instructions, scanning and typing. These date information inputs are processed by calculating, reporting, and using technological devices such as computers. In addition to information systems, application software also helps business to process and operate daily tasks more accurately allowing for more advance and secure methods than the more traditional methods used in the past. Software applications provide the user with diverse programs used to operate computers and related devices. For example, spreadsheets, word processors and database management systems fall under software applications. Software applications and information systems are relate to the organizational departments. Examples of these departments are accounting, human resources...

...Joy Harrison, Kevin Bouchard, Clarrisa Houle, Joel Belew CMTG/445 September 30, 2013 Charlie Neuman Business Case Prototyping Before an application can be implemented executives would like to see a prototype of the application or system to see how it will function within their existing systems. A prototype is a scaled model of an application or system that allows developers to present the application although it may not be fully functional but has enough functionality that allows executives and end users to get the basic understanding of what the system or application does. When it comes to prototyping there are several approaches that can be used, such as the waterfall approach which is the most common method of prototyping used. The waterfall approach “relies heavily on written specs, and leave testing and user feedback until late in the development cycle. A waterfall approach works well when there is a desire to consciously limit user options and force the adoption of out-of the-box functionality.” (Llieva, Mizuno 2013) When taking into consideration the work environment today, everything is fast paced, and interactive and requires a faster process for prototyping. This is where rapid prototyping comes in, rapid prototyping provides incremental prototypes at points throughout the development of the application or system. There are 4 key advantages to using the rapid prototyping method: 1. Allows adaptation to changing or evolving requirements. ...
