SITUATION:
We are investigating the amount of cigarettes smoked by the population of smokers in the metropolitan area. The metropolitan area is defined as the greater metro area of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, and near suburbs. Furthermore, we are attempting to make inferences on meaningful and relevant correlations and trends within the data, among other insights in to the population.

SAMPLING METHOD/DATA COLLECTION METHOD:
We obtained our samples by walking around Downtown Minneapolis individually (with each group member surveying different sections of the downtown area), seeking out individuals that were smoking and occasionally asked various people that were loitering outside. We would then introduce the project and ourselves, explain to them the situation, and ask them if they were willing to partake in the survey. If they agreed to participate, we would hand the participants the survey to complete, or upon their request, simply ask them the questions and record their answers. We did this on three separate occasions. Roughly 40 percent of our sample was acquired between 5:00PM and 8:00PM on Tuesday night, 30 percent between 11:00AM and 2:30PM on Wednesday, and the remaining 30 percent between 4:00PM and 6:00PM on the same Wednesday. Some bias that could be influencing our data is the fact that, in general, the population of downtown Minneapolis is somewhat more likely to consist of individuals with higher levels of education than the population as a whole, due to the heavy number of career professionals in the area. This could also affect income data, skewing it towards the upper end of the population.

(HYPOTHETICAL) IMPROVEMENTS ON SAMPLING METHOD:
To eliminate some bias and create a more accurate picture of our population, there are multiple improvements that could have been made. By sampling only people that are downtown, there could be bias towards sampling older people. We could have fixed this by more locations within the metro area. The downtown location also may consist of mostly higher educated individuals. This problem could also be solved by sampling other locations in the metro area. One more problem with sampling downtown is that there are many bars, which has the potential of surveying people that typically spend more time in bars each week than people who are not downtown.
Another variable that we could have used in our study is alcohol consumption. We thought that time spent in bars/week would accurately predict this, but our results suggest otherwise.

DESCRIPTION OF SAMPLING FINDINGS

NOTE: These are the coded results for each set of dummy variables:

By the way, our interval scaled variables are coded as follows:

Confidence Interval for Population Mean

Variable N Mean StDev SE Mean 95% CI cig smk/wk 99 61.53 37.02 3.72 (54.14, 68.91)

Based on the sample data we have collected, this confidence interval means that we can be 95 percent confident that the mean of our sample will fall within 54 and 69 cigarettes smoked per week.

Confidence Interval for Population Proportion

Variable X N Sample p 95% CI

This confidence interval allows us to be 95 percent confident that 40-60 percent of smokers in the Twin Cities metro area prefer to smoke the Marlboro brand of cigarettes. This does not discriminate between types of cigarettes, only brands.

Confidence Interval for the difference between 2 Population Means

From our sample of 100 people, the average smoker age 40 or older smoked 11 cigarettes more than people under 40 per week. We are 95 percent confident that the true population of smokers in the metro area that are 40 or older would smoke between 26 cigarettes more per week and 4 cigarettes less per week.

New Obs Age If Other 0 if other 0 if other 1 50.0 1.00 0.000000 0.000000

From this data, we can be 95% confident that, on average, individuals at age 50 that prefer Marlboro will smoke between 60.12 and 85.86 cigarettes in an average week.
Furthermore, we can predict with 95% confidence that an individual at age 50 who prefers Marlboro smokes from 1 to 145 cigarettes in an average week. The regression equation didn’t have a high r-squared, which accounts for the large degree of variance.

Stats Report

...Linear Regression Analysis Aarian Charania Professor Habibullah Section: 8am Introduction The independent research company Consumer Research, Inc. conducted research and collected data of annual income and household size, and annual credit card charges. In this report I plan find how much our independent variables (household size and income) affects our dependent variable annual credit card charges. By using descriptive statistics such as mean and standard deviation in order to look at each variable separately. After I will use linear regression to compare two or three variables and see how each variable affects one another. In the end I plan to decide which variable is the most effective in predicting annual credit charges. As the research is limited throughout the report suggestions for improvement such as implementation of new independent variables will be included. This will hopefully lead to a improvement in the model which we already have created by using the data given. Questions For all three data sets the data is spread significantly. This is due to standard deviation being a huge percentage of the mean. In relation to skewness, all three have different distributions; for example the income data is uniformly distributed. However the household size data is skewed to the right, this means that the mean is greater than its median. The amount charged seems to be normally distributed. Amount charged has the greatest mean and household size has the smallest. (All...

Broken Heart Stats Report

...SIM AI A STATISTICAL STUDY OF INCREASED MORTALITY AMONG WIDOWERS A STATISTICAL STUDY OF INCREASED MORTALITY AMONG WIDOWERS Have you ever wondered what it really means when someone tells you they have a “broken heart”? Most people understand that having a “broken heart” references a state of extreme grief or sorrow, typically caused by the death of a loved one or the ending of a romantic relationship. But is there any additional truth to this saying? This study examines the medical implications of having a ‘broken heart’ by establishing a correlational relationship between the loss of a romantic partner and the mortality rates of widowers due to heart-related diseases. By tracking the mortality rates of 4,486 widowers of 55 years of age and older, over a period of 9 years, the researchers made some interesting findings: that within the first 6 months of bereavement, the mortality rate for widowers was 40% above that for matched controls, and that the greatest increase in mortality during these first 6 months came from heart-related diseases. No significant conclusions could be made about the relationship between the cause of wife’s death and the cause of her widower’s, nor about the impact of social class on widower’s mortality rate. We also examine the study’s methodology and provide reasonable recommendations to some of its shortcomings. One practical application of statistics and probability is...

The easiest issue to resolve is to decide if the crew should still be awarded the prizes. Should the crew still earn the rewards or should the entire right be punished because of one person. The next issue would be to determine why Joe did not report his injury. The management needs to decide if the crew is being bullied into not reporting accident’s to make the rig’s accident stat appear better than what it actually is or did Joe not report the incident out of ignorance? Is there any possibility that...

Phase 1: The counselor is aware of the physician’s rights to keep his daughters condition private, however providing medication to a family member is cause for concern when there may not have been a proper assessment completed or if it is not being documented properly. The influence the medication can influence the process of therapy; especially when there may be no medical documentation of initial symptoms can cause various problems with treatment. It is important in determining if there is medical documentation supporting the diagnosis/medication and what types of tools were used in determining those findings. The manhunt lasted for a little over a week and authorities had no idea where he was or what his next move could have been. Somehow, they caught up with him finally and it all ended with a cabin on fire and Dorner allegedly dead. ABC 7 was not subjective, they reported the information they had, and the reporters did not seem to make subjective comments in the first report. Some information I found odd to be reported was the preschool Dorner attended. Has the reports continued, it started to seem like all the stations were being subjective in their reports. Fox 11 news was the most subjective; the reporters shared how terrible they thought the events were and hoped for Dorner’s capture. In both stations the information that was omitted or never spoken of in detail was how good of a person everyone knew Christopher Dorner as. There were people who wanted to share their experiences with him and who have known him for years and never thought of him as a killer, but apparently none of that mattered at this point. NBC 4 was the most objective, there were no opinions, and they reported the information they had. All news stations seemed to omit any good information on the suspect, but at that point they were...
