...Adriana Ambari Writing 100-14 December 6th, 2012 Project 4 Human Trafficking: A Global Epidemic When Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1963, we thought this was the end to slavery, but the sad truth is that it is still occurring today all over the world. This form of modern day slavery is called human trafficking. The United Nations defines human trafficking as "The recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation."(United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime) Human trafficking is a global epidemic, which occurs everyday, in almost every single country in the world. It’s an international industry that is rapidly expanding. Patrick Belser of ILO has estimated human trafficking to be a $31.6 billion industry. This is second only to the drug trade. The 2010 Trafficking in Persons Report by the U.S. Department of State estimates that there are 12.3 million slaves being held captive around the world. This is second only to the drug trade. Globally 80% of human trafficking victims are women and 60% are children. In the minute it took you to read this paragraph two children have become victims to human trafficking. There...

...Briana Williams Gender and Sexism Section 1 (Violence and Rape Culture) November 21, 2013 “Fraternities and Collegiate Response #2 Rape Culture” Quotation: “Sexually active men are positively, reinforced by being referred to as “studs,” where women who are sexually active report enjoying sex are derogatorily labeled as “sluts” (Herman 1954; O’Sullivan 1993). Argument: The author makes the argument that in society men having sex makes them more of a man, where when women in society have sex it makes them a “slut”, or a “whore.” Hearing this can make one sick. Society is all about labels whether it is what race you are, or even If you are just male or female. Questions: * Why is it such a crime if a women enjoys sex with her significant other, but for men it gives them a status of being a stud? * Where did the word slut come from, why did people choose names such as pussy, or douchbag for name calling? Application: For me this is hard to grasp. If a man has a one night stand with a girl at the party the next morning the guy gets greeted with cheers. But if a girl has a one night stand the next morning her friends greet her with a why would you hook up with a random guy you are a slut. Just like if a person is African American yeah there skin color is different than a white person, but that doesn’t make them different then a white person. They could have the same morals and same likes or interests as me. For me I hate how...

Sexual abuse refers to any action that pressures or coerces someone to do something sexually they don't want to do. Sexual abuse can be listed in different categories such as child abuse and rape. Studies show that Florida, Ohio, California and Kentucky have the highest percent of child abuse and rape. There is still a lot we don’t know about the extent of people being abused. Sexual abuse is the most harmful and immoral criminal act, many children have been abused by their close relatives, and most rape victims don’t report that they been rape. Research shows that sexual abuse affects tens of thousands of children and young teens every year. Sexual abuse is the most harmful and immoral criminal act occurring throughout the modern society. Most people assume that every sexual offender is a stranger to the victim; I don’t feel as this is true. In fact, sexual abuse has been defined as...

...Underage consumption of alcohol is an epidemic that has spread across the nation at an almost astronomical rate. The problem is increasing especially among teens in high school. It not only affects their health, but also their attitudes about such things as, school work, socializing with peers, and their personal lives at home. The problem only seems to be progressively growing worse and worse inside of the United States, and by the law of cause and effect, this is not only affecting today’s teens inside of our schools, but also future adults in the work place. Statistics say that that by the time teens reach the eighth grade, nearly 50 percent of teens have had at least one drink, and nearly 20 percent report to have been drunk. Statistics also suggest that 50 percent of 12th graders have consumed alcohol within the past 30 days. Not only is this substance illegal, but when used underage, it poses a substantial risk to not only the individual but also to society as a whole. For example, alcohol related automobile crashes are more prevalent among the ages 16 to 20 than drivers 21 and older. Teens are also more vulnerable to alcohol related brain damaging then adults are, because of the fact that our brain is still in the process of developing, and growing. Alcohol use also interacts with conditions such as depression, and stress disorders, which induces teens to commit suicide, the third most leading cause of death between the ages of 14 and 25. In one study, 37 percent of...

...Are women capable of serving in combat roles in the military psychologically? Kevin Carpenter BCOM/275 July 16th, 2012 Sandra Payne ABSTRACT According to an article in the Huffington Post women handle combat stress as well as men (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/06/08/women-combat-stress_n_873381.html). It is the purpose of this paper to show that psychologically women do not handle combat stress as well as men. Through research I will show that women have a higher chance of suffering from Military Sexual Trauma (MST) and have increased risk of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The definition of MST used by the VA is given by U.S. Code (1720D of Title 38). It is “psychological trauma, which in the judgment of the VA mental health professional, resulted from a physical assault of a sexual nature, battery of a sexual nature, or sexual harassment which occurred while the Veteran was serving on active duty or active duty for training.” Sexual harassment is further defined as “repeated, unsolicited verbal or physical contact of a sexual nature which is threatening in character.” In more concrete terms, MST includes any sexual activity where you are involved against your will (http://www.ptsd.va.gov/public/pages/military-sexual-trauma-general.asp ). PTSD as covered by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs can occur after a traumatic event. A traumatic event is something terrible and scary that you see, hear about, or that happens to you like combat exposure...

...discuss a victim of a sexual assault who did not report the act to her local police department immediately after it occurred, but has now sought the advice of legal consultation to find out her rights and if she could sue the offender for damages or pursue criminal prosecution as a result of the attack. Just in case the victim was afraid to report the assault she needs to know the Rape Shield Law expressly rule out the use of evidence of a victim's past sexual history to weaken that victim's credibility. This law is intended to protect victims from invasions of their privacy, and to encourage them to come forward without having to fear that their sexual history being used against them to hinder their case in any possible way [ (LaMance, 2011) ]. Being a Victim of a Sexual Assault After researching the issue of rape and victims’ rights it appears this will be a hard case to prove in both the civil and criminal courts systems. The accusation of rape usually comes down to he said, she said testimonies and because of that rape is a very sensitive subject to be addressed [ (Hill, 2012) ]. Rape is an assault that is so easily committed and often the term is misused and abused by people who want to get back at a spouse or lover. Some people even engage in consensual sex and when things don’t turn out the way they like they claim to be raped. These kinds of situations make it hard for people who have really been the victim of an actual sexual assault. To pursue a civil...

...Trends- Human Service June 24, 2013 Trends This paper will relate economic and political events to current trends in the human services field. Identify demographic trends that influence future needs in the delivery of human services. The team will focus on the North, South, East, West of the USA, and Military serving in foreign lands for our collection of data for this paper. East One major trend in the East coast that has affected Human Services professionals is the Terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 (9/11). There is no doubt that Americans everywhere will remember the tragic events that took place on 9/11 at the World trade Center, Pentagon, and the aborted flight in Pennsylvania. “The loss of lives and property on 9/11 was not large enough to have had a measurable effect on the productive capacity of the United States even though it had a very significant localized effect on New York City and, to a lesser degree, on the Washington, D.C. area” (Woodside & McClam, 2011, pg.? ) . The attack of 9/11 changed many lives in many ways. Every day is a reminder of how life has changed with longer lines at airports, concrete barriers, a greater police presence in cities, a color-coded five-level threat system, and increased emphasis on biological weapons research. The attacks on 9/11 has affected the work of human service professionals in a major way, encountering clients with both long and short term consequences. Because these attacks were acts of terrorism;...

...Enslaved and Exploited Imagine being in situation where you are forced to perform sexual acts and all odds were against you. How would you feel? Over twenty-one million people experience that on a daily basis, and this act is called human trafficking. In a recent documentary about the subject Ensalved and Exploited, they defined human trafficking as the “recruitment, harbouring, transportation, provision, obtaining of a person for the purpose of a commercial sex act” and most of these people are women and children who are destined for the sex trade. Anyone who is being abused or provides a service because they are afraid is considered human trafficking. This essay aims to explain the contexts of human trafficking and its effects. It will also look at the case of Timea Nagi and relate it all back to course material. Firstly, many wonder how do these people get involved in this trade? The main way that people can get tied up inhuman trafficking is by responding to a job offer. Many young European women who seek jobs as nannies or models in North America, have their passports confiscated upon arrival and are forced to work in strip clubs and brothels. The girls are told that they owe a lot of money for food and travel debt to their traffickers and that is how they are forced to service men. Some may service an average of five hundred to seven hundred men before their debt is paid. Why don’t they just run away or quit? If the women refuse work or run away, are threatened with...

Michael showed him photographs of himself raping a Vietnamese woman. The last picture was the same rape victims severed head, held by Michael in his hand. Later Michael taught him how to hold and shoot a gun. One day, Michael got in a fight with his girlfriend and he ended up killing her. Richard saw the whole thing and Michael was sent to jail for seven years. Ramirez's criminal record began in 1977, when he was placed in juvenile detention for a string of petty crimes. He also received a probationary sentence in 1982 for marijuana possession. He soon moved to San Francisco, California, and then to Los Angeles, progressing to cocaine addiction and burglary, and cultivating an interest in weapons and Satanism. While in California his criminal record became increasing by time, from being a rapist person to killing people he sometimes didn’t even know. Theft turned to violence in 1984. Ramirez's first known murder took place on June 28, 1984; his victim was 79-year-old Jennie Vincow, who was viciously sexually assaulted, stabbed and murdered during a burglary in her own home. What followed was a spree of brutal murders, rapes and robberies, leaving more than 25 victims in its wake. Ramirez's second known killing occurred nearly nine months after his first. On March 17, 1985, he attacked Angela Barrios, who managed to escape...

Studying the victims is important to determine why they were chosen, and how they were affected. Civil rights have come a long way in the past century, and continue to get better. Child rights groups continue to fight and win wrongful rulings in, so the kids can someday redeem themselves. First of all let’s take a look at what victimology is shall we.
