Stella Longquist was not wrong to try to sell her kidney in order to pay the immense debt that was placed upon her. Evidently, she did not have any other options available that would allow her to pay her debt. Therefore, she’s not selling her kidney to gain some kind of profit- she sees it as the only possible way to pay her debt. Thus, the only thing that is wrong from this situation is the health care structure of the society that Stella lives in; one should not feel the need to sacrifice a part of one’s body in order to save another.
2) Give three reasons why someone would be against giving her a payment for organ donation.
The first reason is obvious: it’s called organ donation for a reason. Donations are things that we exchange for no cost, so it would seem socially immoral to star making donations profitable. Also, another reason would be that it would encourage members of society to also attempt to gain profit from selling their own organs making it more difficult for people to find the organs that they need. In order to see if this practice is ethical or not, there should be a large emphasis placed on whether these prisoners on death row have given consent to have their organs removed after death.
