Stench of Kerosene

Summary: In this story, we meet the two persons, Guleri, Manak and Manak’s mother. Guleri and Manak has been married for seven years. Manak and Guleri lives whith Manak’s mother in a small Indian village.
Guleri is unable to have children, so therefore she is a mother-in-law impatient. She is now looking for a new wife to Manak. Manak gets married to the new wife, he really doesn’t want it, but his mom says that he shall do it while Guleri is out visiting her family in Chamba. The second wife didn’t care even though that she was the second wife he had. She did know that she was married to Manak, just because Guleri could conceive children. The second while could conceive children and then she got pregnant. When Guleri got the second wife to know, she got very sad and sets herself ablaze in her hometown. Manak learned from his mistakes through his friend Bhavani. Manak gets very depressed, his heart dies and he gets lifeless.

Characterizes:
Manak: Manak is ‘’moms boy’’, he always listening to her even though that it has very big consequences to his life with his wife and because he is living in her house. Manak is about 25-35 years old, because he is about to have children and he is married. Manak isn’t that immature, he is like a boy in a age of 17.

Manak’s mother: Manak’s mother isn’t a good mother, I think. She does what there is best for herself, not for his son. She doesn’t seem like a women with feelings for her son and Guleri. The mother is about 60-65 years old, because she has Manak, who is about 25-35 years old.

Perspective: I want to compare this story to ‘’Shooting an Elephant’’, both stories is about pressure, and getting pushed to do something, that they really doesn’t want to do. In ‘’Shooting an Elephant’’ a man gets pushed to shoot an elephant even though he doesn’t want to do it, and in Stench of Kerosene a man
