She spends many hours a day on her phone, on facebook, and in front of the television. I have already witnessed the effect men have had on her at such a young age. She just started dating, which is very heartbreaking as a mother to witness. She already feels inferior to men and has allowed them to take advantage of her. “You can’t be what you can’t see.” This is a quote by Marie Wilson. As I have tried to be a good role model for my daughter, I have made a lot of poor choices that have affected her tremendously. Unfortunately, I had to make those mistakes to learn from them and that has made me the independent woman I’ve become. As a parent you hope your children do not have to follow in your footsteps, but sometimes to realize your self-worth you must experience life on life’s terms and hopefully learn and grow through them. Because of the gender roles that still exist between men and women, we must make changes in our society to insure a better future for our daughters. Rhode and Barbara Kellerman July, 2006 c Some four decades ago, Betty Friedan helped launch the contemporary women’s movement with her publication of The Feminine Mystique. The book famously identified a “problem that has no name”: American women’s confinement to a separate and unequal domestic sphere. One factor contributing to women’s unequal status was their absence from leadership positions. Another aspect of the problem was the lack of cultural consensus that this absence was itself part of the problem, and a matter of social concern. Over the last several decades, we have named that leadership problem and created a cottage industry to address it. Women’s underrepresentation in positions of power generates an increasing array of committees, commissions, consultants, centers, conferences, and commentary such as the essays that follow. Yet while we have made considerable progress in understanding the problem, we remain a dispiriting distance from solving it. I. The Underrepresentation of Women in Leadership Roles The facts are frustratingly familiar.
