...An example is “In the meantime, they'll just have to move a little farther north from Mango Street, a little farther away every time people like us keep moving in” this is towards to people like Cathy that make the stereotype seem true. Esperanza and her family are nothing like the stereotype but still are judged because of it. A Latino in the novel is called two different names one in English and one in Spanish to seem like less of foreigners and to make people judge him less. The quotes is” Meme Ortiz moved into Cathy's house after her family moved away. His name isn't really Meme. His name is Juan. But when we asked him what his name was he said Meme, and that's what everybody calls him except his mother" they have a dual identity to try and fit in with nonlatinos because they fear of being judged or...

...The House on Mango Street follows the story of Esperanza, a girl growing up in a poor Hispanic family and how she was influenced by her neighborhood and the people around her. The characters fulfill certain stereotypes that would normally be applied to them, but Sandra Cisneros dispels them by portraying how they actually live through the eyes of a girl growing up in the culture. In the novella, power imbalances between races are shown through the stereotyping and neighborhood divides in the city that Esperanza grew up in, which shows how stereotypes can become so normalized that they are treated as a regular characteristic of someone of a certain group. Esperanza has had an understanding of the way her Hispanic ethnicity is viewed by society, more specifically, upper-class white society. The scale of these stereotypes against Esperanza is shown when she talks...

...House on Mango Street Reading Log Entry One What is the family’s situation? What clues gave this impression? The family's situation was that they were too poor to afford a real house, and moved around a lot. If they did manage to find a place to live, it was generally a rundown house. On page 3 the author says “We didn’t always live on Mango Street. Before that we lived on Loomis on the third floor, and before that we lived on Keeler. Before Keeler was Paulina and before that I can remember.” This shows the reader that the narrator has moved a lot, and that she has moved so often that she was not able to keep track of all the places that she lived in. Another piece of evidence from page 3 is “... and we didn’t have to pay rent to anybody,...

...The novella The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros describes the life of Esperanza via vignettes. The vignettes are used to show Esperanza’s personal experience shortly and the vignettes help show Esperanza’s thoughts during these events or on people. Gender roles are very prevalent in Esperanza’s society. Men/ boys and Women/ girls have separate ideas for the future. “The boys and girls live in separate worlds. The boys in their universe and we in ours. My brothers for example. They've got plenty to say to me and Nenny inside the house. But outside they can't be seen talking to girls.” (Cisneros 8). This quotation shows the changes that the boys go through because of how they’ll be judged. They will be judged by family and members of the community. Another gender role is that men are very forceful and like their way in Esperanza’s society and slightly in society today also. Sally’s husband is a strong example of this. “But Sally doesn't tell about the time he hit her with his hands just like a dog, she said, like if I was an animal. He thinks I'm going to run away like his sisters who made the family ashamed. Just because I'm a daughter, and then she doesn't say.” (Cisneros 92) This quotation shows that the way Sally’s husband treat her and Esperanza uses simile ‘like a dog’. The simile implies that animals that misbehave are usually hit because pain is punishment and causes the animal to not do the wrong action the animal has already done. Another gender role is that...

...Throughout the book, The House on Mango Street, by Sandra Cisnero, multiple themes appear. The most important theme that is presented throughout the book is the theme that people shouldn’t let their environment control who they are, because most people, depending on what environment they live in, will have stereotypes, and most people let this affect they way they live. Also, a lot of people in life just want to fit in, and when it’s too late, they realize that life’s not about fitting in. And lastly, life isn’t about living large and having a fancy house. It’s about making the most of what you got. To start, at the beginning of the book, Esperanza wants a new house, because the people around her told her that the house she lived in was abominable. They thought of Esperanza as trash because she lived in a poverty-filled household. This made Esperanza feel like she wasn’t adequate. An example from the book includes the time one of the nuns from Esperanza’s school dissed her on her house, saying, “You live there?” Esperanza felt awful, and realized, “The way...

...While the novel Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya, the novella The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, and the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream by playwright William Shakespeare seem extremely contrasting in every form and manner, the observation merely scratches the surface, as all three share an obvious, yet hidden theme, furthering the idea that there can be strong and independent...

...book’s publication-hope that the book might succeed beyond my youthful dreams, despair that I had failed to say anything worth saying. The reality fell somewhere in between. The reviews were mildly favorable. People actually showed up at the readings my publisher arranged. The sales were underwhelming. And, after a few months, I went on with the business of my life, certain that my career as an author would be short-lived, but glad to have survived the process with my dignity more or less intact. I had little time for reflection over the next ten years. I ran a voter registration project in the 1992 election cycle, began a civil rights practice, and started teaching constitutional law at the University of Chicago. My wife and I bought a house, were blessed with two gorgeous, healthy, and mischievous daughters, and struggled to pay the bills. When a seat in the state legislature opened up in 1996, some friends persuaded me to run for the office, and I won. I had been warned,...

...VIDEO on FT.com Lionel Barber, Martin Wolf and Vanessa Friedman interview leading figures at the FT luxury summit in Monte Carlo FT.com/luxury-video SPECIAL REPORT | Monday June 15 2009 www.ft.com/business-luxury-2009 Slimming all the rage as belts tighten Haig Simonian investigates the problems faced by luxury goods conglomerates in the current market F or years, equity analysts urged Johann Rupert to spin off tobacco and turn Richemont, the company he chairs and controls, into a “pure play” luxury goods group. In 2008, the independently-minded Mr Rupert finally took heed and returned Richemont’s stake in British American Tobacco to shareholders, leaving his group focused on Cartier jewellery, Montblanc pens and much else. Today, some of the same pundits are regretting the loss of those high and stable BAT dividends, as the world’s luxury goods industry struggles with its biggest challenges in decades. Demand has tumbled virtually across the globe with no clear sign of recovery. Manufacturers from LVMH Möet Hennessy Louis Vuitton, the world’s biggest luxury goods group, to Italy’s Bulgari, find themselves saddled with stubbornly high costs, leaving little room for manoeuvre. Even beauty has proved vulnerable, contrary to the common claim, as figures for L’Oréal and others show. On top of the market problems, the sector faces tough secular change. Globalisation has put a premium on size – but sheer mass risks diluting the exclusivity that is luxury groups’ key...

...ALSO BY MALCOLM GLADWELL The Tipping Point To my parents, Joyce and Graham Gladwell Introduction The Statue That Didn’t Look Right In September of 1983, an art dealer by the name of Gianfranco Becchina approached the J. Paul Getty Museum in California. He had in his possession, he said, a marble statue dating from the sixth century BC. It was what is known as a kouros—a sculpture of a nude male youth standing with his left leg forward and his arms at his sides. There are only about two hundred kouroi in existence, and most have been recovered badly damaged or in fragments from grave sites or archeological digs. But this one was almost perfectly preserved. It stood close to seven feet tall. It had a kind of light-colored glow that set it apart from other ancient works. It was an extraordinary find. Becchina’s asking price was just under $10 million. The Getty moved cautiously. It took the kouros on loan and began a thorough investigation. Was the statue consistent with other known kouroi? The answer appeared to be yes. The style of the sculpture seemed reminiscent of the Anavyssos kouros in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, meaning that it seemed to fit with a particular time and place. Where and when had the statue been found? No one knew precisely, but Becchina gave the Getty’s legal department a sheaf of documents relating to its more recent history. The kouros, the records stated, had been in the private collection of a Swiss physician named Lauffenberger...
