Stereotypes In Two Fishermen

When someone first meets, sees, or hears about a new person, it’s normal to make an assumption about what that person may be like. Forming this first impression is a normal reaction when being introduced to a new person, however it can also be problematic if it’s influenced by a stereotype. Stereotypes cause one to view someone, or something, in an oversimplified, and often inaccurate way. A stereotype will often put a strain on the relationship between two people, as it often causes a person to see the other as who society expects them to be, and not who they truly are. Someone could be the kindest person in the world, but if they’re associated with a negative stereotype there will be those who assume that they’re a bad person. This can take a toll on the person’s social life, as it may be difficult for them to form relationships that are free of pre-existing judgement. In “Two Fishermen”, the stereotype which is associated with the hangman, Smitty, prevents him from being able to …show more content…
Stereotypes also often result in a person feeling uncomfortable, or ashamed with themselves. Smitty is proof of this, as he seems to grow increasingly more disappointed with

Choosing Your Battles

...How would you ensure sufficient discussion of contentious issues in a work group? How can managers bring unspoken conflicts into the open without making them worse? Discussing contentious or controversial topics tend to make people feel awkward talking about it. However, without confronting the stereotypes and personal bias, these unresolved conflicts tend to worsen the situation. Dealing with controversial issues in a constructive manner enables a manager to create a collaborative team environment. As people get comfortable and develop open interpersonal relationships, they exchange different ideas and opinions that typically lead to better decision-making. Personally, the best way to address conflict is to first gauge the level of contention and to determine whether it should be handled in a group setting or individually. Either way, contentious issues (spoken and unspoken) need to be addressed immediately to allow for a team to function efficiently. The root cause of the problem should be identified through conversation with the appropriate parties in order to explore how best to work towards a resolution. Being a good listener is essential. As a leader, it is important to go in as if you have no idea about the topic (even if you do) so you are able to gain honest feedback without the person or group worrying about possible retaliation. Once the facts are confirmed, a Manager can then contemplate appropriate direction/action. This type of conflict handling intention...

Gender Specific Profanity Use

...Gender Specific Profanity Use INTRODUCTION In the course of linguistics there has always been an underlying notion that males have a broader range of profanities in their arsenal opposed to females that have a more narrow knowledge and also that as individuals their of swear words differ in the presence of the same and opposite sex. Rarely are men openly expressive terms such as ‘Slut’ or ‘Bitch’ within conversation with a woman and like-wise woman follow a similar conduct with men, but when they are in a same gendered group this friction is no longer present and the use of swear words in both genders increase. It is within this notion that this survey tries to capture the context that adolescent men and woman use profanities. This assignment uses a variety of acclaimed swear words that are used in modern society in different youthful groups within Melbourne, hopefully identifying a certain culture of ‘do’s and don’ts’ in assimilation to addressing the opposite and same sex. HYPOTHESIS That males with have a greater knowledge in identifying the various swear words presented whereas females will have a more narrow understanding of the words presented. Also, that males will generally use more swear word and in a more frequent manner then females. Also that both woman and men will swear more in a same gendered group then when they are in a mixed gendered group. BACKGROUND Sociolinguistic theory and empirical research gives great detail and insights into gender based usage...

Symbolism

...occurrence of a storm at a critical point, when there are conflicts or high emotions. The storm might symbolize these. Similarly a transition from day to night, or spring to winter, could symbolize a move from goodness to evil, or hope to despair. A river in a scene could represent the flow of life, from birth to death. Flowers can symbolize youth or beauty. Take The Loons as an example, it is just a typical novel with symbolism from beginning till the end, with “the loons” throughout as a symbol of Piquette. Through the parallel of loons and Piquette, it is easy to find their common inability to change themselves and their environment——loons are unable to adapt to modern human invasion; Piquette is unable to escape the cultural stereotypes imposed on her. The novel reflects the ecological and ethical crises between man and nature and among humans for conquest and criticizes the power ideology embodied in the crises. Vanessa casually describes Piquette’s tuberculosis and is embarrassed by her. She ignores Piquette rather than recognizing her as a human being. At the conclusion of the story, Laurence suggests that Vanessa and the white culture she represents will continue to destroy Métis culture until all that remains is a distant memory, like the unforgettable cry of the vanishing loons. In this story, it seems that that summer sees the conflict...

Research Paper

...Significance of the Study In recent decades, public opinion has shifted and has become less supportive of the plight of the poor. The view that poverty is due to individual flaws has become more prevalent. While some recognize societal causes for poverty, many others attribute poverty to lack of motivation, hard work, moral flaws, and other characteristics internal to the individual. Additionally, the literature review will show that the general public’s perception of the poor differs from the demographic profile of those in poverty. Understanding current attitudes and perceptions and how they may influence support for programs and policies that affect the poor is an important first step in addressing the issue. When researchers, advocates, and the media individualize the issue of poverty (Bolstrum, 2002c), the public looks for individual causes and solutions rather than systemic ones. Those in the middle class have distanced themselves from the poor, and because of dominant images of the poor as lazy, unmotivated, and not willing to live up to the American ideal of hard work, there is little attachment to the issue (Lott, 2002). Because of these public perceptions, any stated support for policies affecting those in poverty is tenuous. To change the way that many Americans feel about the poor and to garner support for programs and policies aimed at eliminating poverty, it is necessary to first understand what these beliefs are. From there, advocates and policymakers can address...

Cultural Analysis of Italy

...Cultural Analysis of Italy I. INTRODUCTION Italy is one of the most crowded nations in Europe with a population of roughly 58.2 million. As country, it has much to offer its citizens and visitors. The capital of Italy is Rome (also known as the Eternal City) and is almost 3,000 years old. It has been the capital since 1871 and is home to the Dome of St. Peter's, the Sistine Chapel, the Coliseum, and the famous Trevi Fountain. They are well known for their culture and food, along with their easily recognizable shape as a boot. They are passionate about many things, including their food. When McDonald's opened in 1986 in Rome, food purists outside the restaurant gave away free spaghetti to remind people of their culinary heritage. The richness of its past and the 'live-life-to-the-fullest' attitude combine to make Italy a must-see travel destination. II. RELEVANT HISTORY Evidence of civilization has been found on the Italian peninsula dating far into pre-history. Thousands of rock drawings discovered in the Alpine regions of Lombardy date from around 8,000 BC. There were sizable settlements throughout the Copper Age (37th to 15th century BC), the Bronze Age (15th to 8th century BC) and the Iron Age (8th to 5th century BC). In the north of Italy, the Etruscan culture took hold around 800BC, while Greeks settled in southern Italy from 700 to 600BC, namely in Apulia, Calabria and Sicily (then known as Magna Graecia). The Roman Empire (5th Century BC to 5th Century AD) The...

...A special report on China's place in the world Brushwood and gall China insists that its growing military and diplomatic clout pose no threat. The rest of the world, and particularly America, is not so sure, says Edward Carr Dec 2nd 2010 | from PRINT EDITION • • IN 492BC, at the end of the “Spring and Autumn” period in Chinese history, Goujian, the king of Yue in modern Zhejiang, was taken prisoner after a disastrous campaign against King Fuchai, his neighbour to the north. Goujian was put to work in the royal stables where he bore his captivity with such dignity that he gradually won Fuchai’s respect. After a few years Fuchai let him return home as his vassal. Goujian never forgot his humiliation. He slept on brushwood and hung a gall bladder in his room, licking it daily to feed his appetite for revenge. Yue appeared loyal, but its gifts of craftsmen and timber tempted Fuchai to build palaces and towers even though the extravagance ensnared him in debt. Goujian distracted him with Yue’s most beautiful women, bribed his officials and bought enough grain to empty his granaries. Meanwhile, as Fuchai’s kingdom declined, Yue grew rich and raised a new army. Goujian bided his time for eight long years. By 482BC, confident of his superiority, he set off north with almost 50,000 warriors. Over several campaigns they put Fuchai and his kingdom to the sword. The king who slept on brushwood and tasted gall is as familiar to Chinese as King Alfred and his cakes are to Britons,...
