‘Roiding Up a Good Paper Steroids have been a problem in sports for over 50 years now, and show slim signs of stopping. Sure, you do not hear about them as much, but it does not mean that it is not happening. Athletes are striving to be the best of the best, and the athletic effects the drug shows are overwhelming, but the negative consequences surely outweigh the positives. The paragraph above is just a little taste of what an introductory statement may look like. A research paper on steroids would have a more in-depth, fact spilling introduction. Clearly the topic chosen is steroids and their negative effects. But to be more specific, I would like to find these effects for the Major League of Baseball (MLB). I chose this because I do NOT want to bore everyone, including myself, by writing two papers on accounting and the topic has always been very interesting to me. I am a huge sports fanatic and steroids are problems that arise in professional sports somewhat frequently. People always say, “Everyone knows of the negative side effects of steroids,” but if that is the case, then why do people still take them? The process of a research paper can be lengthy and sometimes stressful, but can be shortened if a proper approach is taken. The obvious start is research. Look up ESPN articles and blogs and other books where steroids are the main topic of discussion and weed out the ones that support your view and have reliable information. Doing this may be tough with all the sources that are out there, but by reading the articles and webpage, you can tell which sources are better than others. The ones with analysts giving the story and their opinion is what I target for the sake of this paper. I would include articles and opinions from athletes, commissioners of the sports, doctors, and sports analysts of the MLB who know the stories and can provide information that would be useful. I generally find five solid sources that I could be beneficial to me and use them sparingly throughout the paper. Since my topic is about steroids, I, first, find a source regarding what steroids are and the history of them so I can give an overall background to the readers. A source such as kidshealth.org provides information about both and other various facts that may be useful later. After an introduction to the paper is under way, I normally think of three different examples that help support my case and find sources for each of the three. My arguments would be the negative effects on the sport, the athlete, and the body. Constant steroid use by players gives the sport a bad reputation, and the organization must come up with guidelines and rules the players must obey or they will be punished. What are the consequences in the MLB and is the drug testing process run? The players are then negatively affected by suspensions or bans, media, and maybe even in the court system. I also want to find out what the majority of fans think about the use of steroids and if the integrity of the sport is questioned. For negative effects on the sport, I would look up the frequency of steroid uses and how the sport handles that situation. A major source would be referring to the Mitchell Report, which is the 409 page report to the commissioner of the MLB that entailed research done by George Mitchell. Mitchell, a former Governor of Maine, did an investigation of the MLB for the 2002 season and released his findings in this document (“Mitchell report: Baseball slow to react to players' steroid use”). Players who were found guilty of steroid use were named and steroid dealers were also listed. A main question I am curious about is what non-steroid using players think of the others who are users. For negative effects on the athlete, I watched Sportscenter for current news; knowing that Barry Bonds has undergone trial for perjury. It is claimed that he lied under oath about his use of steroids throughout his career and is now is under federal scrutiny for it. What do MLB analysts and broadcasters think about the trial? What do fans think about the trial and is it changing their view of Bonds? I also would include the testing procedure and various fines, suspensions, and bans players may receive for any offenses. Do players think the testing program is fair? How reliable are the drug tests since players frequently accused the test of detecting some other substances?
For negative effects on the body, I would look up various websites and find what side effects occur most. Looking back at kidshealth.com, I would find the needed material that depicts the side effects for males and females and how steroids can impact puberty. With using MLB as the main topic, what are the long term effects of steroids? What are the consequences to males?
In the conclusion, I would restate my key findings and include my opinion of the entire steroid epidemic. I would conclude with restating my thesis if necessary and relist my arguments.

...Steroids, Just Another Way to Cheat What is cheating? Cheating is getting rewarded for ability by dishonest means. It is generally used for breaking the rules to gain advantage in the competitive situations. Whether you cheat in school, gambling or even sports, it is one of the lowest moral actions we are capable of doing. It doesn’t matter the way one cheats deep down inside, all of us realize we are doing wrong. One of the ways to cheat is to use steroids. Nevertheless steroids can be extremely beneficial when used for medical purposes. Many patients suffering from muscle-wasting diseases, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), and hormone deficiency benefit from using anabolic steroids. Corticosteroids relieve pain for many patients with arthritis and some skin disorders (Spraugue). Sadly most of the people who do use steroids, use it for reasons to benefit themselves. Most of the cases steroids are being used are in sports, in other words it is just another way to cheat. The use of performance enhancing drugs is mostly done to improve athletic performance. Anabolic steroids are derivatives of the male sex hormone, testosterone. They're used in the medical world to help rebuild tissues that have become weak because of serious injury or illness. Despite the evidence that taking steroids may cause serious health problems, some athletes still continue to use them illegally. The use of steroids and other drugs to enhance athletic performance has occurred with ever-increasing...

...way to get a quick fix that to take a pill or shoot up some steroids? Got an injury? Steroids will fix it. Need to bulk up before the big game? Guess what? Steroids will be there for you. The controversy involving these supplements has been that talk of physicians, athletic coaches, body builders, and parents. Effects resulting from the abuse of steroids can be brutal and not much is being done to stop it. Androgenic anabolic steroids were first created in the late 1930’s by the Germans, and were tested on dogs and later on soldiers. The Germans used them to keep prisoners alive who were dying due to malnutrition and to make their soldiers more aggressive during battle. After the war, doctors in Europe and the U.S. used steroids to treat anemia, malnutrition, and to help patients recover faster from surgery. Two decades later, Dr. Zeigler found that testosterone was the key ingredient in these steroids and soon they were out on the market and readily available. In the well-documented case of the 1976 Olympics, the East German women’s swim team set records and swept the competition. It was later discovered that the team’s doctor and the head of the East German sports federation had given them anabolic steroids which lead to their many unfair victories. Steroids are commonly used in medical practice, curing such things as allergic reaction and arthritis, but also more serous illnesses like some types of cancer. Steroids are also obvious quick fixes for hormone deficiencies or abnormal...

...There has been no bigger or constant story in the world of baseball than the consistent illegal use of performance enhancing drugs. Performance-enhancing drugs are any substance taken to perform better athletically. This term is referenced often and typically refers to anabolic steroid use in sports by professional and amateur athletes. Other substances may also be taken to improve performance, including human growth hormone (HGH). The on going epidemic has brought the attention of some the biggest names in sports into question. Roger Clemens, Sean Merriman and Lance Armstrong just to name a few of what could possible be hundreds according to the Mitchell report. (Thesteroidera.com) The Mitchell report was an investigation to the commissioner of baseball of an independent investigation into the illegal use of steroids and other performance enhancing substances by players in major league baseball, as well as other major sports. The report helped put in the spotlight the ongoing problem mainly found in athletics today. The drugs allowed players to excel far beyond their god given talent and allowed them to produce power numbers never seen before. Not only does “Doping” hurt the integrity of the sport and the athlete, but also causes serious health risks, both mental and physical. I don’t believe there was anyone more intrigued by the epic home-run race of 1998 between Sammy Sosa and Mark Mcguire. The two heroes of the time seemed to sea-saw back and forth until ultimately Mcguire...

...[Debate 3: Steroid Use in Professional Sports] | A view opposing the use of steroids | Merriam-Webster defines a steroid as “any of numerous natural or synthetic compounds containing a 17-carbon 4-ring system and including the sterols and various hormones and glycosides.” A more specific steroid is called an anabolic steroid. The definition for Anabolic steroid is “a class of man-made drugs that are chemically related to the male hormone testosterone.” Anabolic steroids are more accurately called anabolic-androgenic steroids. This name defines their two principle characteristics. Anabolic means to synthesize or build up; thus anabolic steroids increase skeletal muscle mass. Androgenic means involving male sexual characteristics. Anabolic steroids are related to testosterone and affect the body in many of the same ways as testosterone. As of 2009, not a single anabolic steroid had been manufactured that was free of negative side effects. In many developing countries, anabolic steroids can be purchased without a prescription. However, in the United States, they have been controlled substances since 1991. Possession of an anabolic steroid without a prescription is illegal and can result in a maximum one-year prison sentence and a minimum fine of $1,000 fine for the first offense. Steroids only purpose for the professional athlete is to artificially boost muscle mass and power. The steroid user gains a significant edge over their fellow competitors who do not employ such unscrupulous...

...Ash English 11 1 June 2009 Steroids Steroids where invented by the Germans in the late 1930’s to enhance the physical performance of their athletes so that they could be better than every other country in the world for professional sports. Ever since then, people have been risking their health and their life by taking them. Some people take steroids to get stronger or to have a competitive edge in sports, others take them to get rid of rashes, like poison ivy, but no matter how or why steroids are taken there is always an enormous risk of permanently changing the way someone looks and sounds. Also if someone plays sports there is an even bigger risk because of fines, suspensions or accidental overdoses. There are many side effects from taking steroids and there are even more risks, one of which will result in death. The usage of steroids among high school students is on the rise. “Steroid use in high schools has been steadily increasing for the last thirteen years” (Mihoces 1), this is extremely frightening because there are many horrible side affects when people and especially teenagers use steroids. Males and females both have different reactions physically when they use steroids but they also share some of the same side effects including, liver damage, this is because these substances are normally absorbed in the liver, constant mood swings, and profound depression. Except the side effects don’t stop there, in males steroid use can result in premature balding...

...Anabolic Steroids: A Perceived Means to Perfection At what point does the quest for perfection become an obsession? In the world of athleticism, the point of mania is usually when a person turns to performance enhancement by means of ergogenic aids. An ergogenic aid is anything that enhances a person’s athletic abilities. Examples of ergogenic aids are vitamins, foods, caffeine, and the most controversial anabolic steroids. Anabolic Steroids have sparked worldwide interest in the media because of the potential dangers associated with usage and moreover the fact that steroids are illegal in the professional sports arena. Anabolic steroids are classified as ergogenic aids, because they are chemically made substances that promote increased stamina when training, resulting in greater amounts of fat free mass and overall strength. The use of anabolic steroids has evolved into further drug experimentation and dependence, destroying the most critical aspect and fundamental of training “quality vs. quantity,” thus creating a “by any means necessary” athletic society. What Are the Affects of Steroid Use on Athletic Performance? Over the last five years several allegations and indictments have been made against athletes for their use of performance enhancing drugs. According to Steven M. Cohen, “Athletes use these drugs to enhance athletic performance, but not in the manner one might assume. Anabolic steroids won't make an athlete “better” at his or her sport. Steroids aren't...

...sports has advocated a need for new ways for players to get ahead of the rest of the pack. Performance enhancing drugs sit high on the list that the athletes have to choose from as a method to gain the advantage, but these substances have been recently heavily fought against in the realm of professional sports. This resistance has done more harm than good in a sense in that drug testing fails at what it’s supposed to do. It has led to more players turning to black market labs to obtain their steroids. As drug testing is supposed to level the playing field for all athletes, it truly de-levels the playing field in that so many athletes are cheating the drug test than there are natural athletes. Athletes who are taking PED’s are going to these black market labs that are not controlled or supervised when they are creating these drugs and as a result could potentially harm the athlete’s health. The legalization of PED’s in professional sports will not only reduce the amount of uncontrolled steroid activity in professional sports, but also positively enhance the sport and eliminate the monstrous that PED’s of are deadly. Legalizing performance enhancing drugs will give players the knowledge they need before taking them by informing players of the assumed health risks that are connected to PED's....

...Steroids : Not so Good After All In recent years there have been many stories of athletes, especially in baseball, that have gotten caught using steroids. People single out the idea that the competitor did not abide by the rules. Because of this narrow-minded act, they tend to not look at the harmful effects these drugs have on the body. Steroids are extremely damaging physically and psychologically. There are multiple ways in which a human can experience long and short-term effects from the use of these horrible drugs. The most common effects include diseases and severe brain problems. While HGH and Anabolic steroids are a serious concern for sports, it is a more prominent problem in baseball, but the frightening part people fail to recognize, is that the drugs cause life-threatening problems. Steroids were invented by “A doctor by the name of Dr. Ruzicka, who in the early 1930’s created it for medical purposes, essentially to fight conditions like cancer and AIDS” (Steroids in Sports). The drugs are mainly byproducts of the male hormone called testosterone. When a person takes steroids, they are putting extra testosterone into their body. Excessive testosterone eventually leads to rapid muscle growth. As humans use steroids, they can be faced with horrible health problems such as “high blood pressure, HIV/AIDS (when taken with shared needles), fluid retention, depression, anxiety, mania, low sperm production, and over-exertion” (Steroids in Sports). There are many health problems when using steroids. Some of these problems are premature balding, blood-clotting disorders, birth defects, and many other problems to the human body. Users of anabolic steroids may also experience “roid rage” where the user becomes much more hostile and angry which may proceed to violence. In recent years many famous sports players have been caught using these dugs. One was Lance Armstrong, a famous biker whose career is now ruined now that he was caught. They took away all of his awards and titles that he worked hard to get. His whole career in biking is essentially over, all because he used steroids. Though they are abused by many athletes, non-anabolic steroids have many medical uses. One of these uses is to heal muscles in patients recovering from certain cancers and illnesses. Another use of steroids is to reduce inflammation in people with asthma and osteoarthritis. Another way is to prevent anemia. Anabolic steroids can be very dangerous if abused. Steroid use is a very big offence and it must be taken more seriously than it is. Your genes limit how much muscle you can gain and how good you will be at a sport. Some people are “naturals”, they seem to be born to play a certain sport, and they are. But when athletes use steroids they chemically alter their bodies natural ability to develop muscle, giving them an unfair, unnatural advantage. Steroids enhance muscle fibres forever, helping the muscles to become larger, faster than the average person's. When competitive athletes are discovered using steroids, they...
