...Reflective Essay Everyone in life needs a few guidelines to follow. Motivation is one of these guidelines. I personally think it is necessary to life, just like the air we breathe and the water we drink. If we look at motivation a little closer, we can see that it is defined as the process that initiates, guides and maintains goal-oriented behaviors. It is what causes us to act, whether it is getting a glass of water to reduce thirst or reading a book to gain knowledge. A couple of days ago a great man, who gave me a lot of motivation in life and a new vision to my future, died. Steve Jobs was a brilliant entrepreneur who had everyone’s eyes on him for the goals he achieved and the great success he accomplished. Getting to know this person will definitely add a benefit to everybody’s life. Steve was born on February 24th, 1955, to two University of Wisconsin graduate students who gave him up for adoption. His parents’ only wish was for him to grow up and go to college. When he turned 17 he did go to college but soon he dropped out not knowing what he wanted to become in life. He stayed around for almost 18 months only taking the courses he thought were interesting and beneficial. Years later, he and his friend Steve Wozniak spent all their money on developing the computer into an all day used machine that is cheap and handy to everyone. Because Jobs liked what he did and because he had enough motivation, his workplace (the garage of his parents’ house) grew to a multibillion...

Definition of a Leadership Leadership itself can be defined by many alternatives: Leadership has been described as "a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task" Some understand a leader simply as somebody whom people follow, or as somebody who guides or directs other, while others define leadership as "organizing a group of people to achieve a common goal” . Who is a leader? At the most basic level, a leader is someone who leads other. But what makes someone a leader? What is it about being a leader that some people understand and use to their advantage? What can you do to be a leader? Here's what you need to know and do. A leader is a person who has a vision, a drive and a commitment to achieve that vision, and the skills to make it happen. Let's look at each of those in detail. The Leader's Vision A leader has a vision. Leaders see a problem that needs to be fixed or a goal that needs to be achieved. ...1955, Steve Jobs was born in San Francisco, California and was given up for adoption by his birth parents. As an infant, Jobs was adopted by Paul and Clara Jobs. The family lived in California, and Jobs grew up close to his adoptive family. Even though Steve was an intelligent child, he was a prankster and often had to be bribed to study. However, Jobs tested so well in school that administrators offered to let him skip ahead to high school. When Jobs was in high school, he met his friend and future partner, Steve Wozniak. Wozniak was older and was attending college when he met Steve. They immediately connected over their mutual interest in electronics. After graduating, Jobs enrolled in Reed College in Oregon. ...Steve Jobs demonstrates pathos primarily by building on different emotions that correspond with the audience. Pathos is persuading by appealing to the emotions of the listeners. A way to appeal to a group’s pathos is to connect using emotions in order to build bridges and assure them you understand their journey (Lunsford 33). Steve Jobs accomplishes this argument by recounting his failures, particularly how he founded Apple and built it for over ten years to a two billion company, only to be fired from his own company. Jobs’ firing was a public failure that left him devastated. Anybody can relate to failure, especially young college adults. However, Jobs contends that character is built in the face of adversity; "Getting fired from Apple...

...major reason for its lack of success. However after a string of incidents, that led to the flailing success of Apple, in 1998 Steve Jobs returned to Apple and after taking over as CEO, he introduced the iMac Personal Computer which became the beginning of several huge successes for Apple computers and other products. The computer was light, versatile, stylish and relatively affordable. The previous example shows how societies needs may affect the competitive dynamics of products on the market, and if they will be successful or not. Perhaps having “the first graphic based” computer is enticing and perhaps even useful to many companies, but the $10,000 per unit price tag might be an issue. So continuously revamping a product to be faster, smaller, cheaper and more accessible to consumers was a strong driver for creating more innovation on previous versions. It appears that Apple had done an amazing job of creating a plan, working the plan, creating the product and analyzing results. Because they had managed to do this so well, they continued to work the original plan after identifying the flaws in the previous versions and continuously improving the original idea. In 1985 that Steve Jobs was ousted from Apple computers, “Macintosh division” due to lagging sales by the same person who Jobs elected as CEO in 1983, John Sculley. However, in 1997 Steve Jobs had returned to Apple computers, and in 2000, he had taken the position...

As far as their education is concerned they both don’t have a good record, they both were the dropouts. As I am doing the comparative analysis of each of their appropriate skills, I will be considering the differences and similarities between Bill Gates of Microsoft and Steve Jobs of Apple Computer, two of the most successful Business Leaders in the world of personal computing. Both started their careers almost at the same time and within the same industry. They are without a doubt two of the most successful and wealthy men in the PC industry. Steve Jobs is a true creative thinker and technological leader while Bill Gates is a brilliant businessmen and true genius. The competition and rivalry between Gates and Jobs has become one of the most enduring and fascinating in the American business industry. In the end both men are well-known and idolized by many. Both Bill Gates and Steve jobs are extremely good at taking in good ideas, and developing them and making them into a successful product. This mostly because they are not at all afraid of taking any risks and try very hard even if they do not always get it right the first time. An example for this would be MS-DOS for Microsoft and an example for apple would be The Lisa and the Page Maker. As far as their management style is concerned Steve Jobs...

...Carly Fiorina and Steve Jobs Running head: LEADERSHIP STYLES OF CARLY FIORINA AND STEVE JOBS 1 Leadership Styles of Carly Fiorina and Steve Jobs Group 1 Management 4314 MGT4314 Submitted to Dr. Stephanie Solansky Leadership Styles of Carly Fiorina and Steve Jobs Leadership Styles of Carly Fiorina and Steve Jobs Carly Fiorina took a leadership position as CEO of Hewlett-Packard for about 6 years. She brought to Hewlett-Packard (HP) nearly twenty years of experience and expertise in marketing and sales that she acquired with AT&T and Lucent. However, she failed to execute HP's strategy and deliver improvements in the company's profits and stock price. She was asked by Hewlett-Packard's board of directors to resign due to the lack of the leadership skills needed to take advantage of emerging market opportunities (Hewlett-Packard, 2007). Fiorina's mistakes in leading HP are an illustration that leadership effectiveness is dependent on situation and other environmental influences, 2 and not only the traits of the leader. In contrast to Fiorina’s leadership failure, a success story unfolded at Apple Computers where a leader practically saved the company. Management guru Jim Collins calls him the "Beethoven of business," Wall Street loves him, and even Bill Gates became more of a partner to him after once being his nemesis. This powerful man is Steve Jobs, cofounder and current chief executive officer of Apple Computer. Much has been made of Jobs' aggressive and demanding...

...Bill Gates’ motivation may have been sparked from the semi-success of his parents. They were established, after all. His father served in the U.S. Army and later attended college at the University of Washington. His mother also attended college at UW where she was a sorority president. She was also a member of an organization that is now known as the United Way. Bill Gates was known for taking annual week-long vacations that he called “Think Week”. In 1995 he returned from his Think Week with a memo for his executive staff on the subject of the newest development, the internet, and Microsoft’s newest competitor, Netscape. Bill’s initiative to take time for himself to think could be attributed to his grandmother’s constant reminder for him to think. As a boy, he would even sit in his bedroom after dinner in which he said he was thinking. Gates’ was determined to grow his company by placing his software everywhere that he could. His software was installed on nearly every computer hardware that was available, except for those made by Apple Inc, in which he later made an attempt to buy when he recognized them as the only competitor left. He even made a deal with AOL to put their icon on his software if they made Microsoft’s Internet Explorer their internet browser. His competitive nature directly relates to his childhood experiences. His Gam was a competitive card player who taught him how to play and “think smart”. Gates was also the fastest in his class at answering math drill...

...I. Brief Biography of Steve Jobs II. Steve Jobs and Apple III. Ethics and Values IV. Death of Steve Jobs V. Conclusion VI. References Executive Summary Steve Jobs has been labeled a visionary by many, and rightfully so. Though he may not be the tech celebrity that he once was, nor is his name any longer so strongly associated with the basic, commonplace components of software and hardware design that he helped to pioneer and that computer users the world over take for granted, the charismatic, passionately counterculture chief executive officer of Apple Computer was once the most important individual in Silicon Valley and even today dictates the trends and, some would say, overall health of the industry, continuing to drive innovation. I. Brief Biography of Steve jobs Steve Jobs is a great man so the rules don’t apply, is how Steve Jobs is described at the beginning of his career at Apple computer.
