“Jaws” was made in 1975 and it was directed by Steven Spielberg. There is a beach party on Amity Island, where a woman named Chrissie Watkins goes skinny dipping in the ocean. Then, something pulls under. The next day, parts of her are found on the shore. Because of this, the beaches are now closed. Trying to cover up that the death occurred by a shark attack in order to prevent fear, they say it was a boat accident. However, another fatal shark attack occurs shortly after. Meanwhile, consulting oceanographer Matt Hooper examines Watkins' remains and confirms her death was from a shark attack. Then, local fishermen catch a large tiger shark, the mayor proclaims the beaches safe. Hooper and Brody find a half-sunken vessel while searching the night waters in Hooper's boat. Underwater, …show more content…
This resulted in Brody finally convincing Vaughn to hire Quint. Later, Quint, Brody, and Hooper set out on Quint's boat, the Orca, to hunt the shark. The shark appears behind the boat and it drags the barrel underwater and disappears. At night, the great white returns, ramming the boat's hull and killing the power. The men work through the night, repairing the engine. In the morning, Brody attempts to call the Coast Guard, but Quint smashes the radio. Then, the shark drags the boat backwards, swamping the deck and flooding the engine compartment before breaking the cleats off. He tries to suffocate the shark by taking it to shallower but the overtaxed engine fails. With the Orca slowly sinking, Hooper puts on scuba gear and enters the water in a shark-proof cage, intending to lethally inject the shark with strychnine using a hypodermic spear. The shark demolishes the cage before Hooper can inject it, but he manages to escape. The shark then attacks the boat directly, killing Quint. Trapped on the sinking vessel, Brody stuffs a scuba tank into the shark's mouth, and, climbing the mast, shoots the tank with Quint's rifle, destroying

His films have touched on primeval fears with the film Jaws (1975) or looked at the marvels of this world and beyond with childlike wonder in Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) and ET (1982). Other highlights of his career include the literary adaptations, The Color Purple (1985) and Empire of the Sun (1987), adventure films Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), featuring the adventures of his daredevil hero, Indiana Jones. He tackled fantasy in versions of Peter Pan, Hook (1991), Jurassic Park (1993), and its sequel The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) ("Biography.com", 2014). Spielberg’s Jewish upbringing and his lifelong interest in WW II has made for some impressive historical films such as the Holocaust drama Schindler's List (1993) about a businessman who helps save Jews from the Nazis. The highly praised film won seven Academy Awards, including Spielberg’s first win as Best Director. In 1998 his classic film of World War II as seen through the perspective of American soldiers in Europe, Saving Private Ryan (1998), earned him another Academy Award for Best Director. Spielbergs Work

...STEVEN SPIELBERG’S WORK Spielberg is one the most renowned and successful filmmakers of all time. Not only are his films and T.V shows commercial hits, they are also critically successful. He has always taken on unique challenges, the likes of which other film makers would run away from, as is evident from movies like Jaws, Jurassic park and Artificial Intelligence. As is also evident from Spielberg’s work are his innovation and what he has added to global cinema. The scope of his film making at times cannot be put into words. For instance he is one of the pioneers of CGI (computer generated imagery), a prime example of these are his films like ‘Jurassic Park’ and ‘E.T the extraterrestrial’. He made such movies at a time, when computer generated graphics were merely a source of comic relief, and looked very fake and cheap. He actually, made incredibly good use of the, at the time limited technology available to him and made it look good, realistic and appealing on screen. Spielberg has also been a pioneer in the sense that he has always looked to make unique films, i.e. topics that haven’t been tapped before and his work does not stick to any particular genre. For example his array of work includes movies like ‘Jurassic Park’, ‘Saving Private Ryan’, ‘Indiana Jones’, ‘War of the Worlds’, ‘E.T’, ‘Jaws’ and ‘Tintin’. So he has been exploring through various categories like Action, Science fiction, Adventure, Drama etc. Producing some movies where it is Man vs. Beast, Man vs...

Steven Spielberg- Auter

...distinct enough to shine through all kinds of studio interference and through the collective process.” Auteur is a french word meaning ‘ Author’ Arising in France in the late 1940s, the auteur theory it was dubbed by the American film critic Andrew Sarris was an outgrowth of the cinematic theories. The features of being an auteur include; 1 having a recognizable style, 2 repeatedly returning to the same subject mater, 3 habitually address a particular psychological or moral theme, 4 employ a reoccurring visual and aesthetic style, 5 constantly work with the same actors or cinametogarphers or editors…ect , or demonstrate any combination of the above. Steven Spielberg is an auteur and today I am going to prove it. I will show you through his use of themes, subject matter, visual style, Collaborations, and Institutions. Steven Allan Spielberg was born to parents Arnold and Leahanni Spielberg. The older brother to three younger sisters, Spielberg began experimenting with film in his early teens making movies he would show at his family house. At 13, Spielberg was already showing glimpses of future greatness, even winning a prize for his 40-minute war film 'Escape to Nowhere'. The family often moved with his father's job and it was at Arcadia High School in Phoenix, Arizona that he produced his first feature-length film, 'Firelight', a science fiction movie with a budget of $400. Foreshadowing his future success, the film turned a tidy $100 profit after it was shown at a local...

Jaws

...Gabrielle Ibanez Cinema Appreciation 15 April 2015 Jaws “The Beach Scene” Steven Spielberg is without a doubt a director whom has become a household name. With many thousand project titles under his belt in one way or another, one must wonder what the magic behind a Steven Spielberg blockbuster is? In this paper I will be analyzing Spielberg’s story telling in the uncut beach scene in Jaws. This was only Spielberg’s second large studio film and he shows signs throughout every bit of it to be quite an artist with a gift that allows his scenes to breathe organically. Spielberg’s early work has a under layering feeling of Hitchcock styled moments which can be felt throughout the beach scene and Jaws in general. In a very fluid motion he reveals all of the scenes critical elements. First, the camera direction is one that is worth noting. The scene starts with a left pan following a large woman, anyone in the audience would assume she would make quite a full and appetizing meal for the shark lurking in the depths of the ocean. Behind the large woman we see the young man in yellow playing fetch with his dog who will later act as the first red flag that danger has already arrived. Once the woman goes into the water and the young man’s dog goes that direction as well, the young boy we are really meant to follow enters from the left; opposing the camera direction. I feel that the large woman, the dog and the young man in yellow act like arrows pointing your attention towards the...

Shark Culling and Finning Essay

...Statement of intent: I have written this persuasive speech about shark culling, finning and cruelty to sharks to hopefully educate people and inform them with the actual facts and truth. To bring awareness to the important issue of shark culling and over - fishing and to change people’s views on these stereotyped creatures. To convince people to not listen to anything they see or hear on the media about sharks because it is very biased information and not aimed at solving the problem or creating a long term solution, rather to evoke people’s fear of sharks and to make them more scared when swimming in our oceans. It is aimed at the general population of Australia and anyone who would go swimming or indulge in water- based activities in the ocean and along the coast. This is also targeting anyone who has ever eaten shark fin soup without a second thought of the suffering that was caused to make it. As an ocean lover and surfer, I strongly believe that shark finning and culling is an important issue relevant to society today. Most of the population has not been properly informed about the situation and I am here today to hopefully change your views on sharks. By the end I would like you all to see them in a different light and hopefully agree with me when I say that shark culling is unnecessary and inhumane and shark finning is barbaric and cruel. Shark finning, for those of you who are unaware, is the removal and retention of shark fins and then the discard of the carcass...

Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey

...really had nothing in common with the rest of the films of this time period, despite the ability to make you think and a rather unclear ending. The first thing to compare to the rest of New Hollywood films is the film score. Rather than being able to be watched as a sort of visual album like Easy Rider or The Graduate, Kubrick’s film features very little music, and the music it features is orchestral music, which was different for the New Hollywood time period. Films usually featured songs that could be made popular by the films and could be featured on the radio. Kubrick’s decision to use instrumentals may have pathed the way for later sci-fi directors to also use scores put together by orchestras (ex: George Lucas’ Star Wars and Steven Spielberg's Jaws and E.T, all coincidentally done by the amazing John Williams). By using an original and unique orchestral song, it makes us associate the song with the film. It also lets the Director decide when and where to put the music and allows the music to fit the mood of the scene. His choice of music was atypical at the time, but was no doubt an influence to later films. Next, we can analyze the dialogue of the film. As mentioned before, when it comes to dialogue, there is very little of it for us to analyze. However, many critics have mentioned that the dialogue between the characters is rather dull and almost unnecessary. It is as if the film could exist with no dialogue whatsoever, because dialogue only comes up when something absolutely...

Analyzing Film

...Analyzing films is considered an art form that attempts to “break up the whole to discover the nature proportion, function, and interrelationships of the parts” (Boggs and Petrie, 2008). Final Fantasy, the first CGI (computer generated image) film featuring synthetic human actors, opens with its protagonist, Dr. Aki Ross, surveying her barren, alien surroundings. Aki wakes from the recurring dream and looks out at earth from the window of her spaceship. As the music swells, our heroine wonders if she will be able to save the world from the “phantom” spirits that have invaded it. Two scenes later, we learn that the phantoms also have infected Aki, effectively linking the fate of the devastated planet with that of a beautiful, young though entirely computer-generated into a female body. I’m introducing the film by way of Aki’s dubiously raced, female body for two reasons. First, Hironobu Sakaguchi, its creator, director and producer has made it clear in press releases and the supplemental documentary on the special edition DVD that the film functions as a showcase for the protagonist. “Identifying the theme can be considered both the beginning and the end of film analysis” (Boggs and Petrie, 2008). According to Sakaguchi, Aki represents his mother (the two share the same name) and his coming to terms with her death (Pham, 2001). Second and more to the point of my essay, critical reception of the film places strong emphasis on the character, which often is treated as a metonym for...
