...1. Stevia. 2. The artificial sweetener Stevia comes from a plant called Stevia rebaudiana that is naturally grown in Paraguay and Brazil. It’s been around since ancient times being called the sweet herb. It was originally used by the natives to aid in digestion, balance blood sugar, heal blemishes, sores, and wounds, soften skin, and nourish the pancreas. Although it may come off as a healthy alternative to regular sugar, it has had its ups and down with the FDA and it is much sweeter than regular sugar. “In 1991, Stevia was banned from the U.S. due to early studies that suggested that it may cause cancer.”(1) Multiply companies argued with the FDA to be categorized as GRAS so that it could be a sweetener in food and beverages. Stevia cannot be caramelized, which could make it hard for some baking recipes but the formula itself for Stevia was modified in recent years in order to find the right formulations considering it is overly sweet. Stevia is much sweeter than sugar and contains no carbohydrates or calories. 3. After reading into some of the nutritional facts and articles about Stevia, I have come to find that the overall safety of Stevia is not pure. With it being sold as multiple names with different brands, I’ve found that the names are quite similar to Stevia itself (i.e. truvia and pure via) but may not help with the possibility with losing weight in the long run. It may be able to help stabilize sugar intake in a short term way but it may have some harmful...

...Stevia Stevia is an herb found in South America (specifically Paraguay) that has been used as a natural sweetener for at least 1500 years. The leaves of the stevia rebaudiana plant have zero calories, carbs and a zero glycemic index. It is also about 30 times sweeter than table sugar. Studies have shown that these leaves also contain other nutrients such as protein, fiber, carbs, iron, phosphorus, calcium, potassium, magnesium, zinc, vitamins A and C, and other oils as well. The sweet glycosides in the leaves do not break down in heat, which makes this a desirable sweetener to use in cooking/baking. Stevia has been around for many years, and is probably one of the safest sweeteners on the market. Since it boasts a zero glycemic index, it is safe for even diabetics and hypoglycemic to ingest. People with weight problems, blood pressure or blood sugar problems can generally use this sweetener without any problem. Since our body cannot metabolize the sweet glycosides from the leaves, no calories are absorbed from the sweetener. Research shows that Stevia can help to regulate and balance blood sugar. Other studies have shown that Stevia can help to lower blood pressure, without affecting normal blood pressure. It also can prevent growth/reproduction of certain bad bacteria that can cause cavities and gum disease. People have reported significant oral health improvement when adding Stevia concentrate to their toothpaste or using it as a mouthwash when diluted with...

...Carbohydrates Doina Golub DeVry University Stevia Stevia is a sweetener and sugar substitute extracted from the leaves of the plant species Stevia Rebaudiana. Stevia was discovered about 1500 years ago by the people of Paraguay, South America, when they used to crush a few of the sweet leaves for their hot mate tea. In 1887, Dr. Moises Santiago Bertoni started studying the “very strange plant” as described by the locals. Dr. Bertoni named the plant Stevia Rebaudiana in honor of a chemist Rebaudi, who identified the plant’s sweetness component. The first crop of stevia was harvested in 1908, but it wasn’t until 1931that stevia became more commercially available when two French chemist isolate stevioside, the pure white crystalline extract that gives stevia its super sweet taste. Later on, the Japanese government highly regulated chemical additives to their food supply and once stevia established its safety, Japan became one of the first countries to use stevia on a large scale commercially. In United Stated, FDA banned all imports of stevia at first because of the newly-presented Naturasweet and Equal sweeteners on the market but Stevia gained its popularity once more doctors recognized its health benefits; two and a half years later FDA approved stevia as a dietary supplement. They needed extensive research in order to establish that Stevia is safe to use as an additive for food and beverages. The active compounds of stevia are stevioside and rebaudioside, which have up...

... Joseph Lurf 4/1/15 Mrs. Shields First Draft for Sugar vs Artificial Sweetener Sugar is one of the best things that has ever happened in human existence because we have what’s called a “sweet tooth,” so obviously sugar is the only thing that would cure a “sweet tooth” whether it is in the form of a pastry, cake, cookie, chocolate, and every other thing that is sweet. “1822: Americans consume 45 grams of sugar every five days, or the amount of sugar in a can of coke.” (“Why sugar”).But Artificial Sweeteners has taken a major hit in the past forty years. Many people say the artificial sweeteners are better for someone than sugar, but it is not if anything it is worse. Sugar is naturally found in any type of plant anyone could ever think of, and artificial sweeteners are found only in science laboratory (which means made by mankind). The first appearance of sugar was in 510 bc when the Emperor Darius and the Persian Army invaded India, their he found sugar canes , which he kept a secret from the outside world until the product was finished. While sugar was founded at an early time in human history, artificial sweeteners was not discovered until a later date. It was discovered in 1879 by two chemist, at Johns Hopkins University, a German named Constantin Fainberg and an American named Iru Remsen. “For some time, sugary soft drinks have been under attack as a major contributor to the obesity epidemic plaguing the nation, if not the world. As a result, sales of regular soft...

...Threats of Aspartame Article Review Aspartame is widely used through out the world. It is a product used to replace sugar in a diet. Accourding to Dr. Joseph Mercola’s October 2009 article “Artificial Sweeteners – More Dangerous than You Ever Imagined” on Mercola.com the product is very dangerous. I chose this topic as a way to prove myself right. I was hopping to find more information on why Aspartame is not bad but I was not able to. I chose this article in particular because of the in depth review of the product. The article is about the effects of Aspartame on the body but Dr. Mercola goes into the history of the product as well. Before he goes into great depth on the effects he shows the how this product came to be and the process it took to become FDA certified. According to Mercola Aspartame was found by accident. A chemist was working on some kind of chemical that would help treat Peptic Ulcer disease. The chemist realized how sweet the product was and that started the clime to creating the products for consumer use. Many test were ran on the product and most showed the negative aspects of using Aspartame. The only group Mercola mentions in the article that could find no issue with Aspartame was the Searle Company. The problem was that the Searle Company was the company trying to bring the product to market. Even the FDA found the product to be unsafe for human consumption. The FDA found flaws in Searle’s testing along with side effects such as, brain tumors in...

...3 Reasons to NOT Use Artificial Sweeteners There are 3 BIG reasons to NOT use artificial sweeteners. I hope that you will read this information carefully and make the choice to stop putting these dangerous products into your body. Marketing campaigns around these products are powerful and enticing. The manufacturers want you to believe that they are useful in controlling your weight. The part of the story that they conveniently omit are the dangers connected to these products. Because the sweeteners have either zero or few calories, it seems reasonable that they are good for weight loss programs. Unfortunately, the benefits end there. The risks to your health far out-weight any perceived benefits. Hopefully you are aware of the dangers of sugar to your body; sorry to say that artificial sweeteners are potentially even worse (frying pan to the fire). There have been a number of independent studies that have resulted in the same warning – DO NOT USE THEM. At least with sugar, you know the source (sugar cane or sugar beets). With artificial sweeteners, you never know what they are made from. They are manufactured from a variety of things, e.g. saccharin is made from a coal tar derivative. The purpose of this posting is to share 3 reasons why you should avoid artificial sweeteners. completely. Allergic Reactions Because of the unknowns in sweeteners, they have the potential of causing unexpected allergic reactions. The best known reaction is connected to Splenda. People...

...Supply and Demand and Price Elasticity Paper Betty Hargrove ECO/212 January 30, 2013 Vivek Singhal Introduction After careful evaluation of our daily commodities we have chosen, soap, oil, sugar, salt, tissue, flour, toothpaste, deodorant, electricity, and wheat. These lists of commodities are necessary in a basic style of life. Our chosen product to focus on throughout our paper is sugar. We will address the supply and demand shift of sugar in a market economy. Furthermore, we will address supply and demand and price elasticity as well as whether our chosen commodity is a necessity or a luxury. Supply and Demand Shift There are limited explanations of why the demand and shifts in sugar vary. One of these reasons is because of the federal tariffs that are put on sugar. A tariff or tax on the import or even export increases the price and make it less in demand. No one wants to pay more for anything that we were paying less for a week ago. Also now there are a few different substitutes of sugar then using the real things. There are brands such as Equal, Splenda, and Sweet and Low. These are known as artificial sugar substitutes. These artificial sugar substitutes are sometimes found in food that we consume daily depending on our likes. Items that are, labeled as “diet” or “sugar free” use artificial sweeteners. There is “sugar free gum” and “diet soda”. These products typically have artificial sweeteners. The demand for the sugar is how much the consumers are willing...

...Ira Remsen discovered the artificial sweetener, saccharin. He tasted something sweet while eating rolls at dinner and realized it came from the coal tar he was working with earlier in his lab. Remsen did not get credit for discovering the artificial sweetener, Constantin Fahlberg did by patenting it. Artificial sweeteners such as, saccharin, is supposed to be a substitute for sugar. It has fewer calories than sugar. With it having fewer calories than naturally, it will help a person dieting with weight loss. Psychologists at Perdue University experimenting with rats showed the opposite effect. Artificial sweeteners may lead to weight gain instead of weight loss. Before the psychologists conducted the research, consumption data for soft drinks and data on the rise of obesity showed the consumption of artificial sweeteners and weight gain in the United States increased at the same time. Therefore, further research needed to be done to conclude which came first, artificial sweeteners or obesity. Terry Davidson and Susan Swithers conducted the animal model. One group of rats were fed yogurt sweetened with sugar and another group of rats were fed yogurt sweetened with the artificial sweetener, saccharin. Both groups of rats were also fed chocolate Ensure before each yogurt meal. The results showed the rats that ate the yogurt containing saccharin gained more weight than the other rats. One reason for this is the rats eating the yogurt containing saccharin ate more chow. The rats eating...
