...Born December 10, 1830 to a wealthy family in Amherst, Massachusetts, Emily Dickinson was a bright young girl who was beloved by all throughout her community. She received the highest of marks at Amherst Academy and showed a promising academic future. Upon completing her schooling at the academy, at the age of 15, Dickinson enrolled at the Mount Holyoke female seminary to achieve her educational ambition. She studied there for only one year, after finding herself conflicted with the strict Christian teachings. However, Dickinson would not give up on her intellectual abilities. Entering a life of seclusion, away from the eyes of the Christian community, Dickinson would go on to write some of the greatest poetry of American literature. It is through these masterpieces that we can gain a glimpse into the world of Emily Dickinson, and better understand the extent of her seclusion and the reasons why during a time that was heavily dominated by Christian belief. The first example given to us by Dickinson is entitled, “340” or “I felt a Funeral, in my Brain”. With an opening line such as that, immediately the reader can infer from this that the author losing a part of herself. In the first stanza, the speaker can, “feel a funeral, in her brain” prompting the reader to think perhaps a part of her has died. Reading the second stanza, “My Mind was going numb-” also brings forth the idea that she is losing touch with a certain aspect of her mind. Within the third stanza, the line, “Then...

John lived by the Jordan River in Perea as an Essene Jew, around the time of Jesus’ ministry. Many know John as a non-divine apocalyptic preacher who claimed baptism would help one get into heaven, and it would be disadvantageous to ignore baptism. John is relevant to understanding historical Jesus not only because he baptized Jesus but because of their conflicting similarities. John and Jesus were both apocalyptic preachers, in the Essene Jewish sub-group, and popular during antiquity. Many scholars actually believe John was more popular in antiquity. Because of his greater popularity, many argue who kick started Christianity John or Jesus? One can see this argument through artistic paintings of John. Art was an important media for communication during antiquity. As Professor Boccaccini mentioned in lecture, most people in antiquity could not read; therefore, they used paintings to communicate. Painters use symbolic elements in their paintings to portray a message. These symbolic elements, such as red for matador, acted as stories or religious instruction (Boccaccini). ...Departure and crossing of the Atlantic On 10 August 1519, the five ships under Magellan's command – Trinidad, San Antonio, Concepción, Victoria and Santiago – left Seville and descended the Guadalquivir River to Sanlúcar de Barrameda, at the mouth of the river. There they remained more than five weeks. Finally they set sail on 20 September. King Manuel I ordered a Portuguese naval detachment to pursue Magellan, but Magellan avoided them. After stopping at the Canary Islands, Magellan arrived at Cape Verde, where he set course for Cape St. Augustine in Brazil. On 27 November the expedition crossed the equator; on 6 December the crew sighted South America. As Brazil was Portuguese territory, Magellan avoided it and on 13 December anchored near present-day Rio de Janeiro. There the crew was resupplied, but bad conditions caused them to delay. Afterwards, they continued to sail south along South America's east coast, looking for the strait that Magellan believed would lead to the Spice Islands. The fleet reached Río de la Plata on 10 January 1520. For overwintering Magellan established a temporary settlement called Puerto San Julian on March 30, 1520. On Easter (April 1 and 2) a mutiny broke out involving three of the five ship captains. Magellan took quick and decisive action. Luis de Mendoza, the captain of Victoria, was killed by a party sent by Magellan and the ship was recovered.
