The author’s view of the story is about a lack of communication and helplessness that the family is facing. The idea of a lack of communication is presented throughout the story; the doctors give out few details or information when the family requests answers about Scotty’s condition. The family wants to do something, but they feel helpless, the only hope that they have is to wait for the boy to wake up.

Lack of communication is clearly evidenced when Scotty asks his friend about his birthday present and the boy gives no answer. More evidence that supports the idea of a lack of communication is when the technicians start to take Scotty’s blood out and when they take the boy for scanning without telling the family. The mother asks for some explanation, but the technicians do it without bothering to give any answer. Maybe there is an urgent need to do a scan or to take the blood samples, they can’t waste their time discussing with the parents. Also, the parents might not understand and panic misinterpreting the doctor’s explanation, at times it is better the doctors don’t give many unnecessary details.
