...Intergenerational Interview Report “The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.”- Alan Watts Throughout history; more specifically throughout different generations, we as human beings have been subject to a certain amount of change within our society. As time goes by change is almost inevitable among a nation. Change has occurred throughout history due to specific events that have a ripple effect upon individuals. Whether the change is a result of advancing technology, social climate, or foreign influence there is little chance of preventing the effect it will have on society. It is difficult to argue that we have not seen a paradigm shift in social attitudes from generation to generation, and one could easily point to this the being the reason that we as a society have progressed so quickly over the last 50 years. Until conducting these interviews I was not aware of the immense amount of progress, and in some cases amount of deterioration, that we as a society have caused. It is obvious in the way that human beings have treated things like environmental sustainability, civic engagement and social justice over this time and this paper will be examining how these ideas have are different to generation. While interviewing my grandfather I was able to gather lots of information about not just the time he lived in, but also some information about himself that I had not previously known. He started off the interview by telling...

...When I think of the Netherlands, windmills, tulips, and bicycles are the first things that come to mind. Although the Netherlands is much more than this, these things do play a role in Dutch culture. Each cliché has its own specific meaning in terms of the culture. “Bricks paved roads built on dangerously soft ground; tulips thrived in the silty reclaimed soil; cows grew fat on rich, moist grass; glasses of milk and beer were safe to drink when clean water was in short supply; people grew tall from drinking all the milk; and thick wooden clogs kept farmers’ feet dry when trudging through the boggy fields” (Coates 8). Dutch history has transformed these items into being primarily “Dutch” things. One specific thing that surprised me was...

...Homework 2: The Political Conflict in Belgium 1. The political conflicts in Belgium started in 2007 after the general election and a period of negotiation between several Flemish parties (Flemish Liberal Democratic, Christian Democratic and Flemish and New Flemish Alliance) and French-speaking parties (Reformist Movement, Democratic Front of Francophone and Humanist Democratic Centre) with the aim of forming a government coalition. The main two issues for the conflict to arise were the demands by certain Flemish parties for the end of the existing Brussels-Halle-Vilvoorde district, said to be anti-constitutional and demands for more independence for the different regions, especially in terms of the economic reforms – because the Flemish region feels that it is not fair to be paying for the French community economic problems. This is an example of an intergroup conflict between a fragmented community, at this level the conflict is quite intricate because of the large number of people involved and the multitudinous ways they can interact with each other. Both the French and the Flemish community in Belgium have interests they want to defend and negotiations in order to reach an agreement are complex 2. In terms of dimension the stakes of the conflict are high, since the political stability of the country itself is at stake, together with its economic and social stability. In fact the political crisis was such that many observers speculated on a possible partition...

...Language plays and important role in human life. Out of all the languages in the world, English is considered as the international language. There are some reasons why English is so important and many people attempt to learn it Sri Lanka is a developing country and everyone has to learn English because today everything seems to be English. When we consider about education in Sri Lanka, children are forced to learn English starting at preschool in order to make their English better. English is added as a compulsory subject in O Level examination and in A Level examination in SL. Sri Lankan universities are conducting almost all the studies through English medium. After completing a university degree it's time to take up a professional course and of course those professional courses are in English medium. So I think you have to have a very good knowledge of English to be educated and to shine in the society. The next fact I'm sharing with you is finding a job in this competitive society. Every boss is looking for qualified, talented, smart and confident employees. For example if you apply for a high class job and when you go for the interview, do you know what kind of employees are going to be hired up? Why English is so important to find a job? because we already know that people deal with others in English language especially in the business world, scientific world and other. So what my point here is that you can't get a pretty good job or a promotion without knowing proper...

...Can BOSS tune to their SUBORDINATES? -Presentation on Mckinsey Article-Why good bosses tune in to their people- by Robert Sutton Difference Between YOU and BOSS When you take a long time, you're slow. When your boss takes a long time, he's thorough. When you don't do it, you're lazy. When your boss doesn't do it, he's too busy. When you make a mistake, you're an idiot. When your boss makes a mistake, he's only human. When doing something without being told, you're overstepping your authority. When your boss does the same thing, that's initiative. When you take a stand, you're being pig-headed. When your boss does it, he's being firm. Difference Between YOU and BOSS When you overlooked a rule of ettiquette, you're being rude. When your boss skips a few rules, he's being original. When you please your boss, you're arse-creeping. When your boss pleases his boss, he's being co-operative. When you're out of the office, you're wandering around. When your boss is out of the office, he's on business. When you're on a day off sick, you're always sick. When your boss has a day off sick, he must be very ill. When you apply for leave, you must be going for an interview. When your boss applies for leave, it's because he's overworked. Daily Prayer of Employee Give me the wisdom to UNDERSTAND my BOSS Give me the Love to FORGIVE him Give me the Patience to UNDERSTAND his deeds But Dearest GOD……………. Don’t give me the...

...The Boss less office An article for HR MESH – The monthly e-magazine by the HR Forum@SCMHRD THEME: Creativity in HR Submitted by: Sunil Pandey PGP1 Mob: 9920302951 Batch 2012-14 GOA INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT The Boss less office: Future Reality or Dream. ‘Every organization has to prepare for the abandonment of everything it does.’ Peter Drucker Are you angry at your boss? Be boss less... I have always loved my bosses, but most of the time we all have some or other kind of problems with our bosses. Imagine work environments where there are no bosses and no titles, where employees decide among themselves which projects to pursue and which people to hire and fire, and where each employee is responsible for deciding his or her own salary, raises and vacation days. Sounds different and quiet awkward but this is the recent talk of town of an innovation in HR. The boss less vision is being discussed on both theoretical and practical terms. Some see it as the democracy of the office place. E.g.: Valve Corp, a videogame maker in Washington State, has been boss free since 1996. It also has no managers and no official project assignments. How do the 300 employees coordinate their work? They self manage: they recruit each other for worthwhile projects, and they roll their desks around (all are on wheels) to reconfigure their work teams as they wish. Salaries and raises are set by...

...Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION This study is divided into several chapters. The beginning chapter presents a detailed background of the study conducted among a group of secondary schools pupils in The Netherlands. The study focuses on new Media and whether its’ usage has any effect on academic performance. This is explored from the context of HAVO Dutch youths in Rotterdam aged 14-16 years in two schools; Calvijn and Comenius colleges particularly from their peer solidarity and socialization processes. HAVO is one of the four streams of secondary education in Holland referred to as Senior general secondary education (HAVO). The stream takes five years and qualifies students to enter higher vocational education (HBO). Some students can also choose to enter pre-university secondary education VWO or MBO education (Dutch Education Journal, 2007). The analysis is based on both qualitative and quantitative findings from Focus Group Discussions (FDGs), structured and semistructured interviews, drawings, observations and questionnaires. This study considers both the advantages and disadvantages of youth engagement in new media. The study also attempt to contribute to the wider development discourses in the field of children and youth. The conclusion for this book highlights how new media has played a role in the youth cultures in structuring their peer relationships. Throughout the study, pseudo names are used for ethical reasons. If you have something cooking on very low heat for a long time, make sure to use a timer so you don’t forget when to return to cooking. * Be aware of spills on the kitchen floor that could cause someone to slip and fall. Mop up any spills immediately. * When cooking on the stove, always turn handles of pots and pans inward, so they don’t stick out. Periodically clean your oven of grease that could cause a fire. * Tie up loose hair, and roll up shirt sleeves so they don’t accidentally touch the stove or cooking pots. When preparing foods, take caution against burning yourself by putting your safety first: * Never taste by dipping your finger into food that is hot or cooking. Use a spoon, and let the food cool down first before tasting it. * Use a potholder or an oven mitt when...

...Cultural Differences in Job Characteristics and Job Satisfaction Avis Mitchell MT302/Organizational Behavior March 24, 2013 Prof. Wessel The countries I have selected are: Brazil, Japan, and the Netherlands, but let us first talk about Brazil. According to Cultural Dimensions Explained website (2013), the Hofstede Graph for Brazil indicates that Uncertainty Avoidance or UAI dimension is at higher levels, which means that the population is less tolerant to uncertainty and to lower it they adopt laws and policies which are very strict. The Individualism or IDV dimension is only 38 and these people are collectivist comparative to other individualist countries. These two dimensions seem to be more relevant regarding the Brazilian people. Regarding the economy, Brazil is the top player from South America and the 9th globally. Its economy has been improved a lot lately. Their inflation rate is in normal standard, their exports have been increased, and the economy is slowly growing. However, they have to improve their infrastructure, and lower the big difference in income for the people, because there are people that earn a lot of money and there are people that earn very few, so there’s basically no middle class. Moving on to Japan, it can be said that the dimensions with the highest levels for the Hofstede Graph are MAS, UAI, and LTO. The high level for MAS dimension denotes the fact that male people are the ones with the most important roles regarding the work environment...

...culture and behavior of The Netherlands and The United Kingdom. The similarities are much more numerous than differences, but there are interesting particularities. Both these countries have a very high rate of employment in services (74% in The Netherlands and 78% in the UK) which presents a closeness in terms of having an economy highly influenced by personal relations but the dissimilarities appear when you look at the main destinations for citizens from each country: Germany presents itself as the main destination for the Dutch (accountable for 30% of visits), while the UK prefers the United States above all (15% - a high percentage considering location but natural when looking at the historical ties between the two countries. In terms of economy, The Netherlands are heavily outweighed by the UK at a ratio of 3 to 1 when considering the GDP (792 billion $ compared to 2,175 billion $), but the Dutch are superior in terms of GDP per head (47,920$ for the Dutch and only 35,170$ for the British). Life and expectancy is very high in both countries (78 years men, 82-83 women), while density is higher in The Netherlands (400 per sq km compared to 255 per sq km). Literacy is also very high for both, a whopping 99%. Business structure In The Netherlands, the key institution is called the “Works Council” which consists of elected members, recommendation, rights of discussion and the most important aspect, the access to information. The works council meetings are always done in...
