Introduction Life Cares is a skilled care company established in 1970 by Forrest Preston. There are over 250 facilities across the United States with the furthest set of facilities located in Hawaii. The headquarters is located in Cleveland, TN and Forrest Preston is still the CEO of the company. As of 2014 the company built 5 new facilities and is still growing with an additional five more opening between 2015 and 2016. LCCA is a for profit business and depends mainly on reimbursements from Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance. Approximately 10% of the company’s resident population is private pay, but this population is dwindling rapidly due to the amount of disposable income available to those potential residents.
Best Value Principle
The concept “best value disciplines” refer to a model of disciplines by Michael Treacy and Fred Wierseman. These three discipline – operational excellence, product leadership and customer intimacy – are key to a company’s success and they must choose at least one to focus on. Life Cares best value discipline is customer intimacy. Customer intimacy focuses on the customer’s attention and providing exceptional customer service. This is a logical approach for LC specifically because the company is a part of the service industry. Throughout the year there are meeting held a the facility, divisional, regional and corporate level which provides training and support on strengthening customer services and customer outcomes as it relates to inpatient and outpatient services.
Generic Strategy According to businessstrategy.com, the generic strategy is a basic approach to strategic planning that can be adopted by any firm in any market or industry to improve its competitive performance. The three fundamental marketing strategies are differentiation, focus, and low cost strategy. Life Cares generic strategy is focus. In the long term care industry, the rates are set by the federal government so the only flexibility lies within the private rates for residents. Due to this the company focuses on the customer and crating facilities that have the feel of home with room service. Life Cares has a special dining program where each facility has hired a Chef to prepare exquisite meals daily, they offer activities based on the abilities of the resident and the facility grounds and structural design are some of the best in the nation. By having this focus, the company remains to be one of the top 5 largest nursing home company’s in the U.S.
Grand Strategy Grand strategy is a long-term plan of essential actions by which a company plans to achieve its major objectives. Key factors of this strategy include market, product, and/or organizational development through acquisition, divestiture, diversification, joint ventures, or strategic alliances. Life Cares is a privately owned company whose sole grand strategy is to be the facility of choice in every community in which a facility exists. This is a very powerful statement and the company has successful met the expectation of the statement. The grand strategy is easily accomplished when you combine the best value principle and generic strategy with the grand strategy. All three fit perfectly together.
Conclusion
As I have stated in my previous papers, there will always be a need in the healthcare industry. Whether the need is urgent care centers, hospitals, doctor's offices or nursing home care the business of healthcare is here to stay. Life Cares is a force to be reckoned with in the long term care industry. All three strategies put together show a company whose focus is the customer and providing exceptional care in a beautiful environment has been LCs key to success.

...Ethics Reflection Paper STR 581 Ethics Reflection Paper A company is defined by its mission; the mission in turn is a company’s approach to social responsibility. Serving several groups of stakeholder is never easy, each group has its own set of interests and expectations of a company. Through several steps a company can identify, understand, reconcile and coordinate the demands to define its social responsibility. Ethics and Social Responsibility “Corporate social responsibility is the idea that a business has a duty to serve society in general as well as the financial interests of its stakeholders.”(Pearce, 2013, p. 52) Dividing the stakeholders into two distinct groups, internal and external, despite its numerous situations a company can determine how to meet its social responsibility. There are four types of social commitment that strategic managers must consider: economic, legal, ethical, and discretionary social responsibility (Text) Maximizing profits is at the core of economic considerations while ensuring compliance with laws and regulations are taken into account under legal commitments. “Ethical obligations are the obligations that transcend legal requirements” (Pearce, 2013, p. 54). All other voluntarily assumed duties comprise the discretionary responsibilities of a firm. While the demands of stakeholders may overlap these responsibilities only some are required in the mind of the general public. Not only does social responsibility comes with both costs...

Str 582 Ethics

...STR 581 Week 1 Ethics Reflection Paper Ethics, as defined by the MintzbergGhoshal, Lampel, & Quinn, 2003, is acquisition of values and goals, not of methods. Acting ethically is coming to know the difference between what is right and wrong, and doing the right thing. Social responsibility goes hand-in-hand with ethical decision-making, as social responsibility is the obligation to act in an ethical way. Ethics and social responsibility are required when developing a strategic plan especially when considering the stakeholders. In this paper, the subject will discuss the role of ethics and social responsibility in developing a strategic plan and analyze how my ethical perspective has evolved throughout my MBA program. Stakeholders of a company include those with any interest in the firm such as the shareholders, managers, employees, customers or suppliers. Each has their own duties to be socially responsible. Shareholders responsibility is to make sure there is good return on investment. For managers and employees fair pay and good working conditions constitute social responsibility. And customers deserve fair prices and good quality products. Conflict may occur between shareholders and stakeholders, which is where proper ethical decisions need to be made. Some companies establish ethical committees to ³establish some kind of routine for probing into the general ethical climate of the firm´ (Mintzberg,Ghoshal, Lampel,& Quinn, 2003, p.299). Codes of conduct are also...

Ethics Reflection

...Ethics Strategic Planning and Implementation – STR/581 October 8, 2012 The major concern of any shareholder is to maximize the profit of the business; therefore organizations that seek to maximize their profits tend to periodically redefine the company’s missions and strategies. Those in successful strategic management positions also realize the importance of social responsibility. Strategic managers must recognize the importance of the stakeholders, which include stockholders and employees, while also considering the importance of outsiders such as suppliers, local communities, government roles, and the public (Pearce & Robinson, 2011). Because incorporating social responsibilities into the company’s mission is not an easy task, any organization that incorporates the interests of the internal and external stakeholders into its mission statement must consider the following steps: 1- Identify all internal and external stakeholders 2- Understand the stakeholders’ needs and expectations 3- Prioritizing the stakeholders’ needs and expectations as well as the reconciliation of stakeholders claims 4- Coordinating the claims, needs, and expectations with the company mission (Pearce & Robinson, 2011). Ethic/Social Responsibility In management, ethics is like the rules or guidelines that help employees display proper conduct according to the company’s personal standards and values that management has chosen to use to define the company. The company...

Ethics Reflection First Solar

...Role of Ethics in the Workplace Xxxxxxxxxx STR/581 12/10/2012 Abstract The individual assignment this week was titled Ethics Reflection Paper. The focus of the paper was the role of ethics in the workplace as well as awareness of personal views regarding ethical behavior. Students were given the opportunity to participate in the Williams Institute: Ethics Awareness Inventory and the Williams Institute: Ethical Choices in the Workplace and discuss my results. This information was reflected in the paper. Furthermore, the focus was the importance of ethics in Strategy Management and the values of First Solar, Inc. The Role of Ethics in the Workplace Individual ethical standards reflect the importance of character, results, and equity and the ineffectiveness of obligation and rules. The individual rating was above the mean. Character, results, and equity are an integral component to ethical behavior in the workplace. Conversely, the personal rating is below the mean in regard to obligation. Ethical behavior is not a requirement. Obligation implies coercion to comply due to cultural norms and standards. Morality is an option. In order for a firm to ensure that ethical behavior is practiced by employees, the strategy plan must delineate the importance of individual decisions in ethical behavior. “A focus on the rules alone can cause a person to lose sight of the role ethical principles play when individuals are faced with ethical decisions” (University...
