...Analysis of Mathey Trewella The folk tale, Mathey Trewella, is a story written by Sybil Marshall back in 1981. It takes place “backalong the ages” in the legend-land of the West Country. More precisely in the Christian fishing village, Zennor. Here we meet the squire’s son, Mathey Trewella, who has the most amazing tenor voice. One day at the church, right before the priest says the mass, a beautiful strange woman enters. The stranger has the most stunning voice, described as “a silver bell on a frosty night! Like the tide in the moonlight rippling over the pebbles! Like the holy angels singing, the night that the Lord was born”. Drawn by her beauty, the men gave her all their attention. Especially Mathey could not stand the beauty of the strange woman, who later on appears to be a mermaid. The third time she came to the church, Mathey could not stand his desire for the woman so he followed her up to the cliffs. From that day, Mathey and the mermaid were not to be seen in the village. Many years later a ship dropped anchor off the Pondower Cove near Zennor. Unfortunately, the Anchor landed right across the mermaid’s front door, which resulted that her husband, Mathey Trewella, and their kids were caught. The Captain promised to help the mermaid and commanded the crew to raise the anchor. Back in Zennor, they heard the story and felt sorry for Mathey. To remind the village not to be seduced by other temptresses, they carved a figure of the mermaid on her bench in the church and...

...EN10 Analysis The Child Who Wished We live in a globalized world where almost every country is involved with one another. Whether is through trading or war, we’re all somehow constantly connected. The Western world has used globalization to spread its ideas and values, to even the remotest corners of the world. Especially with the Declaration of Human Rights, it has had a huge influence on other countries and what should be perceived as ethical and human. The idea of assisting each other on a global scale, opening our boarders, providing asylum, and giving all of mankind universal rights, is a beautiful goal. And in some ways, the Western world has succeeded, but you can’t create a global consciousness by making laws and conquer countries, you also have to change the people’s mindset and their way of perceiving each other and foreigners. The Child Who Wished is novel by the British writer Courttia Newland. The novel revolves around the main character, a little boy from Africa called Ebi, who just moved from Africa to be with his mother in England. The story begins with Ebi’s first day at his new school, where he is met by an uncanny mass of strange faces, which shatters all his courage. With the teachers hand on his shoulder, Ebi is led with tears in his eyes, straight into middle of the schoolyard, where he’s left alone and scared. He is invisible to anyone but three bullies, who starts beating him up while telling the dirty African to go back home. After the incident...

...‘How do adults perceive that significant others in their lives (i.e. people who are or have been important to them) have affected their development?’ Abstract John Bowlby’s theory of attachment asserts that in childhood attachments are formed between the infant and the caregiver. It also asserts that these attachments form the basis of adult relationships. This qualitative thematic analysis of an interview with Chloe attempts to show how early attachments form a framework of later development. This study shows some support for Bowlby’s theory of the continuity of attachment behaviour but also shows that the nature of attachments can change throughout life in particular due to adult relationships and life experience. Introduction The field of developmental psychology is concerned with understanding how our mental outlook can change over the course of a lifetime. It considers both the effects of cultural and environmental factors and the internal motivations of the individual. One of the main area of research is understanding the degree of continuity in how behaviour is formed and to what degree it can be influenced by past experience. In the area of human relationships, Attachment theory (as cited in Wood et al., 2007) explores how relationships develop. Bowlby (as cited in Wood et al., 2007) proposed that we have a basic biological drive to form an attachment to a ‘mother figure’ at birth. The nature of the attachment gives rise to a ‘internal working model’ in...

...Running head: UBS Financial Services Inc. AN ANALYSIS OF INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL PRACTICES UBS FINANCIAL SERVICES INC.: SWOT ANALYSIS Fall 2012 November 20, 2012 Berkeley College Larry L. Luing School of Business Personal Introduction With a month before graduation, a strange feeling of both accomplishment but yet uncertainty overcomes me. I have nested comfortably in a routine that is college and has been my life for the past four years. Change is imminent, the cliff is pronounced, what was once obligatory will be new and strange. As per a requirement for graduating, students of Berkeley College must engage in an internship to gain work experience in the students’ academic background. Being such that accounting was my choice of study; interning for UBS Financial Services Inc., in White Plains, NY, opportune itself with the experience I need. For many students, including myself, the required internship class was the first exposure to an office setting among many things. Prior my experience at UBS, I was not accustomed to: answering clients’ calls, taking messages, or meeting deadlines issued by anyone other than my professors. There was a definite period of adjusting to the work environment, I needed more time in the morning just to fix a tie. I quickly learned that smarts or native intelligence is but half the battle of becoming a professional in the financial services field; to be professional – to present oneself as someone...

...ENC 1102 02 December 2010 Ambiguity: Is The Turn of The Screw based on a true story or is it a tale of insanity? The ambiguous writing style used by Henry James in The Turn of The Screw leaves the story open to the interpretation of the individual reader. I will show how this ambiguous writing style does not lead the reader to any specific interpretation, but it is actually used by James to deliberately confuse the reader and foster an atmosphere of uncertainty. This purposeful lack of facts by James throughout the story makes the reader draw his own conclusions about what actually takes place. Many critics have analyzed The Turn of The Screw and most of them have come to the same conclusion; that the story is littered with ambiguity, but this is where the consensus ends. Nearly everything that takes place in the story can be interpreted in more than one way (Beidler 189). This novella penned by James has generated more than three hundred books, articles, and doctoral dissertations over the last forty years (Teahan 349). One critic, Edmund Wilson, wrote in his evaluation “There is a very good reason, however, in the fact that nowhere does James unequivocally give the thing away: everything from beginning to end can be taken equally well in either of two senses” (172). Just a few of the many unanswered questions that get asked are: Why did Miles really get sent home from school, is he as angelic as he is originally portrayed or is he a bad boy? Why does the uncle...

...Analytical Essay – My Son The Fanatic For many people it can be hard to break out of the social inheritance, which we all have. It takes time, effort and often, a lot of money. This is just one of the many things, that is happening on in the short story “My Son The Fanatic”. My Son The Fanatic is about Ali and his father Parvez. It takes us threw Ali´s life and how his father Parvez, has a big impact on Ali´s life it. It also shows us the ups and downs in the little families’ lives. The main focus in my analysis is going to be the relationship between Ali and his father, and also on how the relationship develops, how the father helps his son. I also want to look at, the impact that Ali has in his father’s life. If he changed him in any way, maybe Parvez is just living his own life, without any influence from his son, Ali. I will also tell a bit about the environment in the short story. The short story My Son The Fanatic is a about a boy Ali, whom goes to college. He is very religious, a Muslim. He is independent and sees Parvez' beloved Britain as a fraudulent cocktail of "a sink of hypocrites, drug takers and prostitutes.” He seems to bear no resemblance to his father and be very resentful towards his way of sees life. His father Parvez is the caring, protective husband, whose dream is Britain itself; to have his son grow up, educating as an accountant, shine at cricket and school and then set off to marry a good girl and commence his own life. He...

...Dale is being escorted out, he gives Peter a USB memory stick with a project he had been working on, telling him to "be careful" just as he boards the elevator. During the night, Sullivan finishes Dale's project and discovers that current volatility in the firm's portfolio of Mortgage Backed Securities (MBS) will soon exceed the historical volatility levels of the positions. Because of excessive leverage, if the firm's assets decrease by 25% in value, the firm will suffer a loss greater than its market capitalization. He also discovers that, given the normal length of time that the firm holds such securities, this loss must occur. Sullivan alerts Emerson, who calls floor head Sam Rogers. The employees remain at the firm for a series of meetings with progressively more senior executives, including division head, Jared Cohen, the chief risk management officer, and finally CEO John Tuld. Cohen's plan is for the firm to quickly sell all of the toxic assets before the market learns of their worthlessness, thereby limiting the firm's exposure, a course favored by Tuld over Rogers's strong objection… Les personnages There are several key charaters in the movie Margin Call.
