Strange Rumbling
“Strange Rumbling in Aztlan”, an article which on the surface might seem like any other article talking about the death of a significant figure and trying to figure out why and how it happened, is much more than that once you actually examine and go into depth with the reading. Hunter Thompson, the author of the article talks about police brutality but with his diction tries to show the oppression and anger the Chicanos of the greater Los Angeles felt.
Reading the article, you are bound to sense some sort of anger, overall the article talks about and touches on a topic which back in the days and still in present day today is very sensitive and ongoing, but the topic of the article itself isn’t what does the article justice,…show more content… In the article you are exposed to profanity and terms such as “gabacho pigs” through language like this Thompson is able to accurately show the way the Chicanos felt towards the authority and how they felt about the mistreatment and misrepresentation they were undergoing, also with such language and uncensorship you are given a genuine and real feel towards the article. With such diction used the reader is able to relate to the text. In certain articles sometimes you are turned off as the words being used are long and make the reader finish reading the text and having to go reread in order to better understand what was being said and sometimes that isn’t enough, text like this pushes readers away and seems as if its targeted towards a certain section of individuals with a certain level of education. Thompsons diction does the complete opposite, it doesn’t seem as its targeted towards certain individuals but it does seem as if it was written with a certain audience in mind and that audience being the Chicanos. With diction so simple, understandable, and which very accurately resembles the way Chicanos speak, Chicanos can’t feel inadequate to read and understand the article and can’t help but see themselves through the line of the
