...2 Strategic management accounting: how far have we come in 25 years? Kim Langfield-Smith Monash University, Melbourne, Australia Abstract Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide a review of the origins of strategic management accounting and to assess the extent of adoption and “success” of strategic management accounting (SMA). Design/methodology/approach – Empirical papers which have directly researched SMA and prior review papers of the adoption and implementation of SMA or SMA techniques are reviewed. As well as assessing the extent of adoption of SMA and the reasons underlying an apparent low adoption rate, the role of accountants in adopting and implementing SMA is considered. Finally, the success or otherwise of SMA is discussed. Findings – SMA or SMA techniques have not been adopted widely, nor is the term SMA widely understood or used. However, aspects of SMA have had an impact, influencing the thinking and language of business, and the way in which we undertake various business processes. These issues cut across the wider domain of management, and are not just the province of management accountants. Research limitations/implications – There is limited value in conducting future surveys of the adoption and implementation of SMA or SMA techniques. Rather, the focus should be on how SMA-inspired techniques and processes diffuse into general practice within organizations. Originality/value – Twenty-five years after the term strategic management accounting was...

...For any operating business, the primary goal is not just to earn profit but also to maximize their profit margins. As normal convention dictates profit as the difference between revenue and cost, how much profit an entity makes depends largely on how much revenue it earns. Therefore, price and quantity of goods sold are the two most direct influence on the profit of every entity and this makes a not only accurate but also strategic pricing decision a necessity for any business that wants to thrive. There are many methods and models available for managers to use in order to fix price for a varying range of products and services, depending on the position of the company in the market and the strategy associated with the product. For a multinational company that produces electronic products, it is most likely to be a large supplier in a diverse market and great or little, its ability to influence market price is, nonetheless, certain. As a result, managers of said company will most likely take full advantage of this active power to further their strategy for the entity. Usually, the process of arriving at the selling price that is tagged with each product involves coming up with a base price or a marked up price, which are derived from cost information and then, this price will be further adjusted along with other market forces and competition so that a compromise is reached, enabling the company to earn profit and yet, the price is not so high as to drive customers away. Because...

...Real-Life Examples of Successful JIT Systems written by: Jack Wilson • edited by: Michele McDonough • updated: 6/29/2013 JIT manufacturing is a powerful and proven system of producing products efficiently while keeping costs low. Some of the most successful companies in the world have used this philosophy to improve their manufacturing processes and better meet customer demand. Just in Time Manufacturing Just in Time Manufacturing (JIT) refers to a system of manufacturing in which products are not built until the product is ordered and paid for. Some companies that have successfully implemented JIT include Toyota, Dell and Harley Davidson. Toyota Toyota is considered by many to be the poster child for JIT success. The Toyota production strategy is highlighted by the fact that raw materials are not brought to the production floor until an order is received and this product is ready to be built. No parts are allowed at a node unless they are required for the next node, or they are part of an assembly for the next node. This philosophy has allowed Toyota to keep a minimum amount of inventory which means lower costs. This also means that Toyota can adapt quickly to changes in demand without having to worry about disposing of expensive inventory. Important Factors to Toyota Success: Small amounts of raw material inventory must be kept at each node in production, so that production can take place for any product. These parts are then replenished when they are used...

Research scholar), Lecturer in Accounting and Finance College of Business and Economics Mekelle University Mekelle, Ethiopia Abstract This study examines decision making and the role of management accounting function in a business organization. Using the review of literature, I identify management accountants perform a wide variety of tasks. Only a part of management accounting activity is directed at performance improvement. Some of the activities they perform are related to the statutory reporting requirements of the organization. Some of these are related to the operational requirements of the finance function itself such as processing transactions receiving money and paying bills. Literature foresees new management accounting techniques and changes in organizational and business environments having a huge impact on management accountants’ roles, yet empirical evidence on fundamental shifts in these roles remains relatively scarce.
