Overview of Competing Technologies
As messaging services gain popularity, competing technologies will continue to emerge to produce the next best form of technology. Competing technologies such as Lync, Skype, Google Talk, Yammer, and many others have been developed to function as a competitive forms of communication against Jabber. Though despite their various competitive messaging services, they each offer new innovative approaches that help capture the attention of its customers. The development of emerging technologies calls for the development of viable technology that Jabber must evaluate and compete against in a business setting such as Microsoft Lync and Skype.
Microsoft Lync. Microsoft Lync is an emerging piece of technology that has provided ease of communication via a messaging service just like Jabber using a direct connect to Microsoft’s Outlook. Many businesses identify their means of communication through the use of Lync due to its messaging capabilities within the company’s internal and external email services as well as screen sharing. Lync like many other messaging services allows for quick messaging via an integration with Microsoft Outlook’s contacts and services. The tools encompassed within Lync have helped it gain its popularity and competitive edge against Jabber and Skype for business.
Skype. Skype one of the world’s leading form of messaging services is known to be Jabber’s most innovative competitor. Its use of real-time messaging via video or just chat has allowed its users to praise it as a high competitive piece of technology with the capability to do so much for the world. The ability to use Skype as a personal and business messaging service has helped gain its popularity. The face to face capability via a phone, computer, and all other mobile devices has led an engulfed desire for much of the world’s interest to place their focus on Skype over any other messaging service. Though Jabber has still managed to rise amongst its competitors. (Investopedia, n.d.)

Strategic Planning

...IT STRATEGIC PLANNING “You’ve got to be very careful if you don’t know where you are going, because you might not get there.” Yogi Berra BACKGROUND Henry Mintzberg, former president of the Strategic Management Society, points out that “strategy can not be planned because planning is about analysis and strategy is about synthesis.” 1 Failure to recognize this basic distinction accounts for the frequent failure of such exercises, as does an excessive focus on technical detail, lack of suitable leadership, and perhaps most important, failure to align technology to institutional mission and priorities. Strategic planning involves a structure or framework, a set of procedures (both formal and informal), and of course content. Beyond these basic elements, the underlying assumptions about strategic planning are that the future can be anticipated, forecasted, managed or even controlled, and that the best way to do so is to have a formal and integrated plan about it in place. The process of planning itself may turn out to be more important than the results, and that process requires, as Mintzberg suggests, both analysis and synthesis. Planning simply introduces a formal “discipline” for conducting long-term thinking about an institution, and for recognizing opportunities in and for minimizing risks from the external and internal environments. Among the hundreds available, perhaps the most well-know model of strategic planning has the SWOT (for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities...

Strategic Planning and Nursing Process

...Strategic Planning and Nursing Process Your name HCS/482 January 12, 2015 instructor Strategic Planning and Nursing Process Strategic planning and the nursing process have many similarities, however strategic planning has the potential to affect how nurses perform in profound ways. As the integration of technology and informatics, takes hold in healthcare settings nurses can help use their knowledge of the nursing process to develop a strategic plan to best incorporate this emerging technology. The goal of this paper is to compare the nursing process and the strategic planning process, as well as nurses’ role in both processes. Comparison “The nursing process is a scientific method used by nurses to ensure the quality of patient care” (Nursing Process, 2014, para 1). The nursing process helps nurses develop a plan to guide patient care through assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Similarly, strategic planning is a method to design a comprehensive plan to guide an organization’s operations. Strategic planning has many of the same steps as the nursing process; assessment, analysis and identification of potential solutions, course of action, implementation, and evaluation/feedback (Hebda & Czar, 2013). While the nursing process focuses on a single patient’s goals, strategic planning focuses on organizational goals. The nursing process often involves a nurse and a patient, however strategic planning affects a variety of internal...

...technological means in terms of systems development. It is a comprehensive plan that I.T. professionals use to guide their organizations. A System Strategy should cover all facets of technology management, including cost management, human capital management, hardware and software management, vendor management, risk management and all other considerations in the enterprise IT environment. Executing a system strategy requires strong IT leadership; the chief information officer (CIO) and chief technology officer (CTO) need to work closely with business, budget and legal departments as well as with other user groups within the organization. An article from CIO magazine, “Strategic Systems: Beneath the Buzz” discusses the way the very term “strategic systems” is beginning to lose its meaning. Ever since the word came into popular usage in business and IT management circles it has come to be applied to many projects, almost just for the sake of using the term. Instead of projects being necessarily strategic, they are simply called such so it sounds efficient and practical-the fact is there is little attention being paid any longer to what it means. According to the article, “it’s imperative that IT and business leaders know what truly is strategic in order to focus scarce resources on really important, high-payoff initiatives.” The article defines strategy from a business perspective as “a comprehensive plan of action to achieve a goal.” With this definition in place, it puts the term...

...Strategy defined What is strategy? The Oxford Dictionary describe strategy as A plan of action designed to achieve a long-term goal or overall aim; or the art of planning and directing overall military operations and movements in a war or battle; It is derived from the Greek word “stratégia” that means generalship (Oxford dictionary. 2015). A company’s strategy consist of the competitive moves and business approaches that managers are employing to grow the business, attract and please customers, compete successfully , conduct operations and achieve the targeted levels of organizational performance (Hough et al. 2008:4). Strategy is all about how the anticipated goals will be achieved. It works like a recipe where different elements are used in a more or lesser manner to achieve an end result. In an organisation the leader ensures all members are heading in the right direction and completing their goals and objectives. Organisations lacking leadership quickly implode as members scatter in all directions attempting to achieve conflicting goals in a silo-orientated environment. However, this can be overcome if leaders communicate and execute business strategies. A business strategy is a leadership plan that achieves a specific set of goals or objectives such as: * Developing new products or services. * Entering new markets. * Increasing customer loyalty. * Attracting new customers. * Increasing sales. * Decreasing costs. (Baltzan, 2013:16) Leaders also...

...Healthcare and health information technology (health IT) are undergoing transformative change at an unprecedented pace. Strategic planning has become a major discussion point among CIOs, CTOs, CMIOs, and IT Directors. Whether it is implementing enterprise-wide electronic health record (EHR) systems, working toward compliance with the “meaningful use” EHR Incentive Program, enabling patients’ involvement through PHRs, transitioning to ICD-10, establishing insurance exchanges, becoming an accountable care organization, or even deploying a medical home, healthcare executives are confronted with a confluence of high-priority initiatives. It is imperative to view health IT strategically from an IT management perspective (Tan). Based on developing and institutionalizing health information and health IT strategic planning for large-scale integrated healthcare organizations, lessons incorporated from this can be vital. Following these practices will equip the CIO, CTO, and CMIO to not only develop a Health Information and HIT Strategic Plan, but provide clarity on operationalizing the plan and managing information and IT strategically within their organization as well. Align with Corporate Plans for strategic intent, context, and line of sight. Consider mission, vision, core values, business principles, strategic goals and objectives, strategic direction, strategic initiatives, and outcomes-based performance measures—all elements of a robust strategic planning framework (Tan). Many public sector enterprises adopted corporate planning because they were to do so by the Bureau of public Enterprises, the governmental body that regulates all public enterprises. Despite the facts that are now quite a few firms which have introduced corporate planning, such firms still constitute a small minority.             On the academic side, research in India on strategic planning has not taken off. There are very few studies on corporate planning practices in India firms. Of late some leading Indian management education institutions have begun to offer short duration executives development programmes on corporate planning. A quick examination of the teaching materials used in these programmes clearly shows a predominance of materials originally developed in the United States. This is not surprising because strategic planning at the enterprise level had its genesis there. Strategic planning or corporate planning is a management process which enable a firm's management to explore the future impact of change and make current decisions to move towards the envisioned future. The Western economies, characterized by a rapid rate of change and fierce competition became an ideal home for the development of the concept of corporate planning.
