History and Accomplishments Purpose By the time of this report Twegaite has three announced chapters: (1) Twegaite Inc. – New Jersey, (ii) Busoga Twegaite – Houston, TX and (iii) Twegaite – Minneapolis, MN. Twegaite has had two international conventions: Houston, May 22nd – 26th and Minneapolis, May 22nd – 25th. The three chapters are unanimous in purpose and resolve to develop Busoga. Just note that both Houston and Minneapolis made Twegaite truly international. (i) New Jersey Chapter At the May 21st – 25th , 2009 Twegaite second International Convention in Minneapolis, MN, the banquet speaker Betsy Waibi Zikusoka spoke of the history and purpose of Twegaite as a concept and an organization. She also highlighted some of the achievements the organization had scored in specific projects back in Busoga. “I shall try my best to give you the history of Twegaite” she said. “Twegaite came about as a result of a meeting that was held in Princeton Junction, one Sunday afternoon, in October 1998. We figured that as a group the idea of trying to give back to our community in Busoga and Uganda at large was not a bad one. It is a non-political group and the name Twegaite means, "Let's unite." POLZER ALISON BERKLEY WAGONFELD Flextronics: Deciding on a Shop-Floor System for Producing the Microsoft Xbox It was March 2001 and Jim McCusker was getting restless during the long flight over to Hungary. He had just spent a few days visiting Flextronics’ North American operations in Guadalajara, Mexico, and now he was on his way to Flextronics’ central European facilities. He was planning to spend two days there before heading back to his primary office at Flextronics’ U.S. headquarters in San Jose, California. As the senior account manager for Flextronics’ relationship with Microsoft, McCusker spent much of his time traveling between the two facilities, one in Mexico and one in Hungary, that would be producing the new Xbox video game system for the 2001 holiday season. When McCusker first took charge of the Microsoft account in November 2000, he quickly realized that Flextronics had committed to an extremely aggressive schedule for producing the Xbox. The two facilities designated to build the product would have to work together very closely to achieve Microsoft’s goal of a simultaneous North American and European launch. The Microsoft Xbox was Flextronics’ first truly global project, and McCusker knew that it would be important to standardize certain elements among the Flextronics facilities. When writing a doctoral dissertation on the novels of Nabokov or the plays of Sophocles, clearing intellectual space for new construction can be as difficult as finding space to erect a new building in central London. A search ensues for an untapped archive, an unrecognized nuance, or a theoretical framework able to demolish a sufficiently large body of existing work. The history of information technology is not such a field. From the viewpoint of historians it is more like Chicago in the mid-nineteenth century (Cronon, 1991). Building space is plentiful. Natural resources are plentiful. Capital, infrastructure, and manpower are not. Boosters argue for its “natural advantages” and promise that one day a mighty settlement will rise there. Speculative development is proceeding rapidly and unevenly. But right now the settlers seem a little eccentric and the humble structures they have erected lack the scale and elegance of those in better developed regions.
