...Tennessee Williams shows how lying can be destructive, and take over someone's life. Lying takes over Blanche’s life throughout “A Street Car Named Desire” lying allows Blanche to escape the reality of her life when she tells lies to other people, because she starts to let herself believe her own lies. Blanche escapes reality because she is not proud of her past, and wants to be something else but herself. Blanche tries to hide who she is to her friends, and even her family. When Blanche just meets someone, it’s easier to feed them lies about who she is because they don’t know anything about her so it’s easier to believe. It’s more of a struggle to tell her own family lies because they question her because they know her past. Blanche let’s lying destructs her life slowly, by ruining each relationship with someone important to her. Blanche lives in a fantasy world to hide from her reality. Lying can be destructive because people let it overtake their life, and the truth always ends up coming out because people end up forget their lies. In “A Street Car Named Desire” Blanche starts lying to her sister, and she knows she’s lying. Blanche says to Stella in Scene One that she’s taking a “leave of absence” from her job as a schoolteacher. The truth on that situation is that Blanche got fired from her job as a school teacher, and got asked to leave. Later on Blanche lies about her age to Mitch telling him that she is younger than her twenty-five year old sister to Mitch...

...Growing up through the 2000’s and the age of technological boom has been fast paced too say the least. The world has become a very small place thanks to social media magnate such as Facebook and Twitter. Today everyone wants the newest and best thing, which is very hard to do since fads and trends are rising and dying daily. America is known for its go go go way of life, were everyone lives by the clock and never takes a minute to stop and enjoy the simple pleasures of life. Tennessee Williams’s “A Street Car Named Desire” tells a story of an outsiders emersion to the New Orleans culture and how she struggles to understand the “slow, lazy, sleepy, sweaty, hot, wet, lazy, and exotic”- Mark Childress, city that it is is. From the first set of stage directions the atmosphere is laid out for the city, “This “blue piano” expresses the spirit of life which goes on here” Through out the entire play we see that whenever a conflict rises the blue pianos tune becomes distinctive. From what we have learned in your class so far about New Orleans is that music is a very large part of their culture, especially blues and jazz. Mr. Williams illustrates not only the looks of the city but also the smells. He describes the faint redolence of bananas and coffee, and how you can feel the warmth of breath from the brown river, representing the Mississippi. The vibe given off by the city seems to very laid back and soothing. Relationships between blacks and whites during the 1940’s was not healthy...

...A Street Car Named Desire Tennessee Williams suggests that Blanche represents the faded American past in a few different ways. One way is her difficulty fitting in with life in New Orleans. New Orleans is a modern urbanized city unlike Laurel, which is a small rural town where Blanche comes from. Blanche's life is crumbling just like the old south is crumbling. Blanche and Stanley were in two completely separate and different worlds, which caused major conflicts between the two. The biggest conflict is between illusion and realism. Blanche lives her life avoiding the truth and trying to erase her past. She lives for how things should to be, not for how they are. She prefers magic and shadows to facing facts in bright light as she says "I don’t want realism. I want magic". A lot of the things she does are to make her feel pure which she is not. She blames herself for the death of her husband and therefore constantly bathes to cleanse herself of her past. Blanche also doesn't accept the fact that she is getting older. She stays away from lights because "electric light bulbs go on and you see too plainly" and she does not want people, in this case Mitch, to see what she actually looks like. Stanley looks at the world as it is and not what he wants it to be. He doesn't buy into all of the things that Blanche says. When Blanche said that she lost Belle Reve, Stanley didn't trust her because she didn't have any proof. We see he didn't trust her when he said "In the state of...

...A street The character of Blanche Dubois in the story of A Streetcar Named Desire is considered a tragic protagonist for the various conflicts she is suffering both internally and externally. It is mainly her self-delusion that ultimately leads to her destruction and the reason she is committed to an insane asylum. From the very beginning of the play we can tell that Blanche is being standoffish and not revealing everything. For instance, Blanche tells her sister in scene one that she’s simply taking a leave of absence from her job as a schoolteacher. In reality Blanche has been fired from her position and was basically run out of the town she is from because of her scandalous behavior. Blanche has been lying to so many people for so long, she can no longer can see the delineation between fantasy and reality. Blanche’s husband’s death at his own hands causes her a great deal of anxiety and guilt. We realize she is most haunted by that scene of her husband’s suicide, and that the memory is present by the sound of the polka music and then the sound of a gunshot. The death of all her older relatives and the loss of the family mansion Belle Reve contribute further to her mental instability. The struggle between Blanche and her brother in law Stanley Kowalski are a major focal point of A Streetcar Named Desire; almost immediately after meeting Blanche, Stanly has formed an opinion of her and doesn’t hold back from letting it be known how he feels about her. Stanley is a workingman...

...October 5,2014 Lessons before dying essay section 3 Question A In the book Lessons Before Dying by Ernest Gaines the characters learn lessons about themselves. By the title of the book you know that Jefferson learns a lesson before he is executed but there are numerous characters that learns a lesson in this book. Characters I see that grow through this book are not only Jefferson but also Grant and Sheriff Sam Guidry. You can tell they have changed by their words and actions within the novel. The first character that has perhaps learned the most and is the narrator of the book is Grant. Grant is an elementary school teacher in his mid-twenties. In this novel you can tell that grant is an intelligent man but he is also depressed. Grant lived in a segregated community for his whole life and because of this it made him a bitter man. He had no faith in human beings or for his society. In the beginning of the novel you can tell that he is one of the few intelligent man in his community because he went to college. He is disrespectful and he thinks he is superior to others because of the great intelligence he has. For example you see this happening when he talks to his aunt and Reverend Ambrose. When grant starts to go on visits to see and talk to Jefferson his perspective changes. He learns that he can make a change in this world. At first he didn’t, he thought visiting Jefferson was going to be waste of time but slowly and surely he learned that we could have a great...

...Blanche: A sympathetic Character she is Blanche in "A Streetcar Named Desire" is a character that throughout the play stirs all type of emotions. It can be difficult when trying to figure out if someone is a sympathetic character or not. With that being said despite the flaws that Blanche possesses she is still a sympathetic character. This can be supported examining the play. The beginning of the play Blanche automatically generates sympathy, as she is portrayed as the Southern wealthy woman who has a problem speaking to a black person in a normal manner. She has lost the family home Belle Reve and all the family members have died. She has come to stay with her sister Stella and brother in law Stanley (Williams 2191). This quote generates much sympathy for the character that have watched everyone die alone. “BLANCHE: I, I, I took the blows in my face and my body! All of those deaths! The long parade to the graveyard! Father, mother! Margaret, that dreadful way! So big with it, it couldn't be put in a coffin! But had to be burned like rubbish! You just come home in time for the funerals, Stella. And funerals are pretty compared to deaths. Funerals are quiet, but deaths–not always( )” Blanche goes on a spree trying to turn Stella against Stanley throughout the play. During Scene 4 Blanche is desperate to turn them against each other. She says to Stella: "He acts like an animal, has an animal’s habits. Stella cruelly rejects Blanche, in favor of Stanley. Stella ignores Blanche...

...already on this street. There are many youths, standing on the streets still littered with broken glass and debris from the previous night’s melee. The crowd stared unsuspectingly at me whenever I come out of my store to gauge how things are. Around 4 pm a car had stopped in the street, blocking traffic after being hit repeatedly by rocks and bricks. A police car raced down the street by my store, rounding up three youths. A car drove by a short time later driven by a white man and I heard someone yelled out, “It’s a white man, get him.” A barrage of bricks and rocks struck the car, knocking out windows and leaving ugly dents. The driver lowered his head from sight and accelerated. Thank goodness he was able to get away. Aug. 14 1965 Today is not looking any better than it did yesterday. More and more people are loitering in the streets. I went to go outside and heard remarks that maybe they should start looting the stores. Well I rushed back inside and locked up. I had a gun under the register that I got out so I could scare of anyone who tried to break in. A short time later, a group of about 20 young men started to approach my store. They stared directly into the store. They stood there for what seemed like forever contemplating if they should act. Suddenly from nowhere a rock smashed into my front door cracking the glass. That was all it took as the rest of the men started to charge and smash into the windows. By a small miracle a cop car came down the street and turned...

...ourselves settled to just hang out with each other. We put on a movie, and sat down to enjoy it when a sudden roar shook the foundation of our country home. Minutes later the streets, as well as my home turned in to a black void in which all the lights were no longer on. In a panic my family and I stumbled through the house trampling each other in the darkness. We scattered about until my mom found the door that revealed a vivid red glow. Soon after the same glow attracted the rest of my family and I, so we followed, but what we found was not an appealing sight. The ruckus that shook the house turned out to be the electrical tower that powered the entire street or what was left of it. The tower exploded leaving the streets black. Unfortunately for me and the people, who live on my street, there was a fire that had spread through the fields around where the tower lay, and we lived miles away from any real, stable, fire department. This put us in a massive state of shock, so we quickly scurried along the out skirts of the fire, trying to find some way of getting the fire to die out. The search was a long one, but no luck came are way. The fire grew more and more, and every one began to panic as there seemed to be no hope of extinguishing the rippling blaze. Because it seemed as a loss cause, the families of my street began to dissipate, leaving there homes to be demolished by the monstrous inferno. The same, on the other hand, could not be said for my family, who were dead set on keeping...

...University Planning Committee to solve the problem. Based on the traffic projections that the University has made, it was concluded by Dr. Starr that the roads leading to the interstate highway from the stadium should have a sufficient capacity of 35,000 cars per hour. In order to solve the problem, the Planning Committee is looking at widening some of the current streets from the stadium to the interstate highway to increase its current capacity. II. Problem The main problem of the case is: How to maximize the traffic flow in order to accommodate 35,000 cars per hour from the stadium to the interstate highway? The sub-problems that needs to answered are: 1. What is the maximum number of cars that may actually travel from the stadium to the interstate per hour? Why is this number not equal to 33,000, as Dr. Lee suggested? 2. If the cost for expanding a street were the same for each street, which street(s) would you recommend expanding to increase the capacity to 33,000? Which streets would you recommend expanding to get the total capacity of the system to 35,000 per hour? III. Objective The group aims to identify the best traffic flow that can accommodate 35,000 cars per hour from...

...and I decided to live about five years ago. We purchase a townhouse located off a street called “Chelsea Search Way” which is a cuddly sac off another street named “Summer Ridge.” This is the main street going through our neighborhood and links many cuddle sacs together. Summer Ridge is like one big loop that turns off of Kingstown Village Parkway and then reconnects after a mile and a half. Summer Ridge is one of the liveliest streets neighborhoods you would ever see. Everywhere you look there are small children playing, people walking their dogs, joggers running and bicyclist’s riding. The only problem with this is that this neighborhood could be one of the most dangerous places because there is a lot of traffic going up and down this road. Each year over 4,000 sons, daughters, mothers & fathers were killed while walking in their neighborhoods or crossing streets. Fairfax County must not understand that there is a problem here, because the speed limit was set at 25 miles per hour, which I believe is way too fast for such a playground. Not only the speed is the problem, you have Metro and school busses driving through and cars parked on both sides of the road making it almost impossible for two way traffic at times, not only that think of the hazards of this. Let’s say you had to park on the street and you where opening your car door to get in and a bus come alone and smashes you and your car door. That is just one of the tragedies I’m trying to prevent....

...were used to create this piece in different parts of the song. Coleman has been criticized for playing out of tune, but this is one other way for Coleman to “play outside” which was what he aimed to do. The photo I chose to associate with Coleman’s song is one that represents chaos, crowd, and conjunction. It is a photograph that was taken on May Day in NYC in 2010. Thousands of workers and immigrant laborers took to the streets to celebrate May Day, demanding rights for those “who toil in the sun”. The message in Manhattan was delivered with bullhorns and drums. Their voices and fight were echoed by millions of workers around the world, from Havana to Berlin and Istanbul. The issues were the same: more jobs, better working conditions, higher wages and decent health care. In the photo, we can see an extremely crowded NYC street. There are so many people harboring the streets that it looks as thought there is no space to move. Similar to the photo, the music has beats and rhythms that crowd one another allowing for no room or space. The street signs, cars, and colors in the photo add to the confusion and chaotic scenery. In the song the instruments sound confusing and bumptious. In my opinion, it is painful to listen...
