...ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” I think that his words have true meaning because when analysing heroes like Spiderman and Martin Luther King Jr. you would notice that both come from a background full of struggles. For example, Spiderman dealt with the death of his parents and uncle and Martin Luther King Jr. suffered from beatings and depression. The two are now heroes because they found the strength to live and endure. This theme is also commonly found in Greek mythology. Heroes from those times had also undergone many hardships in their way to glory. A great example of a hero from Greek times is Theseus. He fought through many obstacles and it is because of his strength, leadership and determination through them that he carved his name in history....

...Hardy and A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. Though each book is written in a different era and continent from each other, both authors have taken a profound look into the lives of women who, in submission of the society they live in, persevere and carry on their lives no matter what. Though Hardy’s Victorian countryside and Hosseini’s war ridden Afghanistan have very different plot lines, both novels develop the theme of inner strength of women through the protagonist’s characteristics, the conflicts in the plot and setting. In 1891 Hardy wrote Tess of the d’Urbervilles. The novel received a public outcry and was criticized for its taboo topics and insight into a ruined woman’s private life. The passionate and intense Tess Durbeyfield, whom the novel is centralized around, faces more tragedy and injustice in her adolescent years than any women could bear and perseveres through out. Tess’s character, as well as the women around her, shows the true inner strength women possess. From the early days of Tess’s journey, the inner strength of her character is shown as she plays caretaker to her large family. Hardy presents Joan Durbeyfield, Tess’s mother: as superstitious, faintly childlike, and essentially harmless, and he had remarked that between her and Tess ‘there was a gap of two hundred years as ordinarily understood’...Hardy encourages us to be critical...

...Sam Goodnough October 10, 2010 AP English 11 Period 1 Strength In the novel, The Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne endures a drastic life changing experience. Hester is convicted, in a Puritan New England town, of committing adultery and is scolded constantly by this town. Even though Hester is in an incredibly difficult circumstance that most of the people could not endure, Hester remains proud and unregretful while her lover hides in the shadows of the sinful act. Throughout Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne portrays his belief in the significance of personal strength through the contrasting personalities of Hester Prynne, who portrays strength as she faces the sin with dignity, and her lover Arthur Dimmesdale, who portrays weakness as he continues to hide from the sin. Hester Prynne’s personal strength is important, as well as necessary, for her redemption in life. At the beginning of the novel, Hester is condemned for her sin and forced to stand on the scaffold, she remains strong and dignified despite constant disapprovals from the town. The townspeople are shocked as “Hester Prynne appeared more ladylike… than as she issued from the prison,” and when Hester’s beauty “shone out and made a halo of the misfortune and ignominy” despite her dreadful sin (49). Although at times Hester feels weak and alone, in public she continuously displays immense personal strength. Instead of running away, Hester faces her punishment and wears her scarlet letter...

...their military? Sparta was a city-state in Ancient Greece. They were known for their strong military and highly valued strength but dismissed education. They had more Helots (slaves) than citizens and made them do everything but fight. Even with their strong military they only lasted 300 years. Because of this, their weakness in society outweighed their strengths in the military. They lacked education, beat young boys to the point of death, and abused the Helots. First off, the Spartans lacked a formal education. In document D it says, “[The Spartans] learned to read and write for purely practical reasons.” They focused almost entirely on obedience, bodily fitness, and courage. Spartans weren’t allowed to leave the city-state for reasons other than war. Back then, that was one of the few ways to get an...

...Out of the Ruins Out of the ruins of a crumbled city and a tortured life, we can still find unbelievable strength. In A Thousand Splendid Suns, Mariam and the city of Kabul symbolically follow a similar path. Mariam is belittled by her mother, abandoned by her father and, beaten by her husband but opens her heart long enough to find love and acceptance from Laila and her children. All the while, Kabul, the beautiful and prosperous city positioned at the base of the Hindu Kush Mountains is bombed and destroyed and then given new life. The book uses symbolism and metaphors to tell a story of the power of loyalty and devotion, the human capacity for evil, and the remarkable inner strength of women. Mariam starts life at a disadvantage. She is the bastard daughter, a harami, of a wealthy man and his maid. She spends her first fifteen years in a mud hut with her bitter mother and weekly visits from her father. Nana, her mother, lives in a constant state of depression and negativity and often places her pain on her daughter. Ironically, Nana’s belittling only encourages Mariam to idolize her father, Jalil. He was always positive and gave Mariam hope that life could be better than her mother tried to make her believe. Ultimately, Nana’s negative rants about Jalil turn out to be true. Mariam risked everything she knew, including the love of her mother, to be accepted by her father and his family. Her reward was being left to sleep in the street while her mother...

...Positive Thinking Justin Bailey Expository Writing Positive thinking requires the strength to endure trials and tribulations in life while also having the courage to prevail over them. Keeping a chin up approach to life each day will provide the self-confidence needed to pursue goals and achieve them. Balancing life’s challenges such as becoming a teen parent is a difficult task, but if achieved creates long lasting positive results. A well-rounded approach to maintaining a positive attitude will always provide a constant form of overcoming life’s challenges. There are several different modal constructs such as the seven-element’s approach and the US Army approach (Harrington, 2012). Harrington (2012) suggests “Approaching life’s challenges in a positive, optimistic way by demonstrating self-control stamina and good character with your choices and actions” (p. 29). In other words, when faced with a challenge think of the glass half full instead of half empty. Always be optimistic in the thought process in order to keep the mind in a state of positivity. Keep emotions in check and think before speaking. It will produce a more positive outcome. There are many challenges to overcome when raising a child, but being a teenager with no job and trying to finish high school is even more difficult. My life was changed forever when my son was born in the summer of 2006. It was three days before the fourth of July and everyone was preparing to go on vacation while we were...

...generation model, the Mustang still remains as one of America’s top selling muscle cars. Not many people would choose their muscle car to compare themselves to but you will see my car, the Ford Mustang, and I are characteristically similar in several ways. Like the Mustang, I am strong- like the car’s engine. I am reliable and dependable and still going strong after almost 5 decades and many physical revisions. The engine of the Mustang is strong and powerful and symbolizes my strength, both mentally and physically, to endure the many hardships I have had throughout my life. I was in a fatal car accident at the age of 2 that killed 4 people in the other car. I sustained a large head would that required 64 stitches across the back of my head and I also had 2 crushed ankles. My parents were told that I would most likely never walk again. I underwent many reconstructive surgeries on my ankles and spent over 6 months in casts that started at my toes and went to the tops of my thighs. My persisting strength became evident after the casts were removed and I began to walk once again. As I got older, I was able to play many sports like softball and basketball and never allowed anything to slow me down or get in my way. It just goes to show that a strong will can trump any doctors’ prognosis. I was raised to be a very reliable and dependable person. I was taught to always be on time, preferably early, for anything and everything. This trait was instilled in me by my father and...

...character of the book, endures every form of abuse from individuals in her life that should have been showing her love. Everyone abused her except her sister Nettie, whom she found herself trying to protect from their father. Celie’s mother abused and cursed her, even while being on her sick bed because her husband, Celie and Nettie’s father, desired to have sex with Celie more than he did with his wife (Celie’s mother). Marriage is a union between a man and a woman although in today’s society in some states it could be man and man or woman and woman. However, within the traditional marriage, the man is said to be the head of the household, especially within the Christian faith. Marriage consists of God, the husband, and then the wife which is how it was intended to be. In this context, historically, the men within a marriage ruled or oppressed the wife. The wife had to do whatever her husband demanded of her. Alice Walker’s The Color Purple explains the marital oppression of women, which included an older widowed man who is given a younger unattractive wife by her step-father after asking for the more attractive daughter for marriage. Chanequa Walker Barnes of Duke University Library states, “The Color Purple is a story about pain and, ultimately, triumph.” Being that Celie is the unattractive child, she endures violence, rape, and the lack of love from those who should have protected her. Dealing with such for so long causes her to struggle to gain strength,...

This exercise will allow me to be refreshed in the areas of expertise while also allowing me to discover which areas I should seek improvement. The following three traits of my strengths are which I have learned and mastered over my lifetime of professional and military experience. Three Strengths: 1. Self-confidence - Self-confidence specifies self-assurance in judgments, decision making ideas, and capabilities (2010, Lussier). This area is my best trait due to my military background. Prior to entering the military I had very little self-confidence that resulted in not achieving my full potential. The military has taught me to be very self-confident and it allowed me to not have any self-doubt when I am on an assignment or any other type of endeavor. Therefore, I have carried over from what I have obtained from my military experience to my professional career and it has allowed me to contribute to my organization successfully and to receive positive feedback from upper management. 2. Integrity – Integrity refers to behavior that honest and ethical that can make one trustworthy to others (2010, Lussier). It is also linked with self-confidence because it takes self-confidence to be an honest and trustworthy...
