MATRIC NO: KEC110007

Assignment Question
Produce stress concentration factors for the following geometry by using FEM (ANSYS). The stress concentration factor will have three different ratios of D/d; each D/d will have at least four different values of r/d. Please compare the findings with those in available charts of stress concentration factors. Discuss your finding. The submission will be in the form of a brief report in PDF or MS Word.

Assignment Answer
Table1.1
Ratio, r/d | Value of Kt | | Experimental D/d, 2.0 | Experimental D/d, 1.5 | Experimental D/d, 1.2 | Ideal D/d, 2.0 | Ideal D/d, 1.5 | Ideal D/d, 1.2 | 0.05 | 2.06 | 2.10 | 2.01 | 2.87 | 2.66 | 2.37 | 0.10 | 2.03 | 1.99 | 2.00 | 2.28 | 2.1 | 1.96 | 0.15 | 1.84 | 1.89 | 1.81 | 2 | 1.87 | 1.76 | 0.20 | 1.73 | 1.83 | 1.76 | 1.84 | 1.73 | 1.63 |

Figure 1.1

D/d=2 | Ratio, r/d | | 0.05 | | 0.10 | | 0.15 | | 0.20 |

D/d=1.5 | Ratio, r/d | | 0.05 | | 0.10 | | 0.15 | | 0.20 |

D/d=1.3 | Ratio, r/d | | 0.05 | | 0.10 | | 0.15 | | 0.20 |

In design under fatigue loading, stress concentration factor is used in modifying the values of endurance limit while in design under static loading it simply acts as stress modifier. This means Actual stress= t k × calculated stress. For ductile materials under static loading effect of stress concentration is not very serious but for brittle materials even for static loading it is important.
From the Table 1.1 and Figure 1.1, there are slightly different of experimental data when compared to the theoretical (ideal) data. The experimental data are collected after do simulation of stress analysis using ANSYS APDL.
All value of experimental data is slightly lower than the theoretical value. The gradient of the curve is slightly smaller from the theoretical curve and the value in (r/d) is smaller than the ideal as well.

Influences on Learning

...Unit 6: Influences on Learning. *The impact of key influences on my own learning.* There are many different factors that can influence a person’s learning. For example, a person’s health is one factor that could have an influence on learning. This is because if someone was poorly and they couldn’t attend college, they would miss lessons which could potentially make them end up falling behind with coursework because they don’t have all the notes they need to complete it. This could also link with a person’s motivation. This can also be a factor that could influence learning because, for example, if a person couldn’t be bothered to do any of their work then they wouldn’t be achieving good grades, or if they couldn’t be bothered to turn up for their lessons they could miss important notes to be taken to help them for the next assignment. Health is one of the main influences that has affected me throughout college. I have a lot of trouble with anxiety and sometimes my mood can become very low due to the anxiety and stress. This resulted in me not going to college and missing a fair amount of work being set by teachers. I felt that I was getting so far behind that I would never be able to catch up and then I wouldn’t get the grades I needed to do what I wanted when I left college, and then that made me stressed even more and made me begin to lack motivation to actually get out of bed and go to college. But also, because college was a new place where I knew completely no one, this...

Personal Responsibility

...Societal, individual, and academic triumph is all-dependent on accommodating responsibility. Personal responsibility also entails the ability of a person wisely responding to the numerous challenges and situations of life. How well we manage time, stress, and the commitment to the main goal will affect the outcome of any situation. As a first step in taking accountability for actions is to manage your time successfully. Time management is an important tool when completing goals that have time limits and constraints. Realistic goals should be set when managing the time it will take to complete each task. An example is; when you are a working and going to school full-time. You must take into consideration your work schedule, studying, assignments due, and making sure, you have time to rest so that you can remain focused. Victory in college is about superior time management. Good time management is a tricky skill to learn. Many students have not had the chance to apply time management in secondary education. During their high school years, many students have not needed to handle their time vigilantly – it has to be prepared for them. Coursework in high school was often prearranged on an everyday basis with only a few enduring assignments; regularly with class time dedicated to some of that work (University of Pittsburg, 2012). Accepting the consequences that come from individual actions can become stressful, especially when you are juggling work, school, and other situations...

Indian Ethos

...Discuss the cause and solutions to stress in modern organizations. How does the Indian philosophy differ from western thought on stress management? Definition of Stress Stress is an imprecise term. It is usually defined in terms of the internal and external conditions that create stressful situations, and the symptoms that people experience when they are stressed. McGrath (1976) proposed a definition based on the conditions necessary for stress. Causes of Stress Stressors can be divided into those that arise from within an individual (internal), and those that are attributable to the environment (external). Internal conflicts, non-specific fears, fears of inadequacy, and guilt feelings are examples of stressors that do not depend on the environment. Internal sources of stress can arise from an individual's perceptions of an environmental threat, even if no such danger actually exists. Environmental stressors are external conditions beyond an individual's control. Bhagat (1983) has reported that work performance can be seriously impaired by external stressors. There are many aspects of organizational life that can become external stressors. These include issues of structure, management's use of authority, monotony, a lack of opportunity for advancement, excessive responsibilities, ambiguous demands, value conflicts, and unrealistic work loads. A person's non-working life (e.g., family, friends, health, and financial situations) can also contain stressors that negatively...

Success With Less Stress Research Paper

...Homework brings feelings of dread, anxiety, and stress to many students. Successful students often sacrifice their health and well-being for the sake of their academic future. Students can end up sleep deprived if overloaded with homework and can even resort to self-harm and illegal activities to cope with the stress. To avoid having students burn themselves out, teachers should assign no more than fifteen minutes of homework to high school students a day and only assign homework with obvious value. Parents often hear the begrudging complaints from their children about having to sit down for hours of homework after school. These students aren’t focused and engaged in learning; they’re mindlessly completing a given task. In reality, this is not helping the student at all, and only creating an unhealthy attitude toward school. The article “Success with Less Stress” discusses a study...

Stress Management Among Students

...Learning is affected by our ability to manage stress. Stress comes in many forms. Things like our environment, physiological well being, thoughts and social stresses can have an effect on our learning. The knowledge of stress’s impact on learning has resulted in a cottage industry dedicated to teaching methods of managing it. The ability to identify sources of stress and then ways to manage them are key to resolving and overcoming stress and opening our learning channels. Environment is a major factor in causing stress and tension in all of us often without our knowledge. Noise can throw the body and mind out of synchronization and make concentration difficult. Studies have shown “that music which goes against the body’s natural rhythm - the heartbeat - induces a type of stress that even babies in the womb react to by kicking the mother’s tummy.” (“Heighten”). On the other hand music that fits with the bodies natural heartbeat causes relaxation and allows the mind to focus better and get into a flow zone, absorbing knowledge at a greater rate. (“What”) Weather and pollution can also cause stress we may not even notice. (“Stress”) You know the feeling. It is a cloudy hazy day outside and you can not seem to motivate yourself to do anything. Going out feels like a huge chore and all you want to do is sit at home and be lazy. Studying and doing anything productive is out of the question. The reason is that your body is reacting to the stress the weather is causing. Relaxation techniques...

Poverty

...Addressing Poverty in Schools Poverty is a social issue that has plagued many societies throughout the past decades with people trying to eradicate it. While there is no one fixed definition as to what is poetry, it can be defined as the inability to meet the basic needs for daily living. Poverty is a worldwide crisis; it does not simply affect one country, one race or one person, it affects all. Child poverty is persistent throughout the world; even in many wealthy countries (Huston). This brings us to poverty and the school. It is necessary for people of the society to take a hands on approach in addressing poverty especially in schools, as this is the initial step in shaping individuals for the real world. Each school faces its own difficulties, some more than others as we look at the issue of poverty. While there are some schools that may seem to be “better off” than others due to their elite status, they are still faced with the issues that poverty results even though it may not be as great in number as other schools. Because of their locations, recognition and familiarity, and their interaction and relationship with society, schools are a major platform for addressing poverty. Children who grow up in poverty are less likely to do well in school and this in turn puts them at a disadvantage for their future children. According to Capra 2009, the nation must address, and treat poverty, a condition that erodes the future and impedes any attempts at educational reform. There...

One particular incident which I would like to share over here is when our teacher explained our first class presentation assignment and it was due within a week. At that time, I just heard the due date of my assignment and just saw that the instructions are on the home page of health education course. Thus, I did not pay much attention to what the teacher was explaining because I was having my midterm of pathophysiology on the same day and I was worried how I will manage the two of them simultaneously. I am a single mother. My daughter was one year old at that time and she did not let me study much. All these factors stressed me out. Our teacher gave us time to ask questions related to assignment but, I pretended to appear attentive and concentrated. Thus, I did not ask any question. Eventually, I faced a lot of problems when I had to write my assignment. I contacted one of my classmates and asked her how she is doing her assignment. Therefore, I could not get a satisfactory grade in my first assignment of health education. Not only this, I found hard to study for my midterm of health education. This was due to the reason that I missed important information from my teacher and I assumed health education to be an easy subject. That is why, I engaged myself in...

Personal Responsibility

...that oneself is personally in control of all their successes and failures and their personal motivation determines how much success they will achieve. Every decision a person makes has a consequence. The self-evaluation of ourselves will bring the awareness of the consequences associated with our decisions. This awareness will allow us to make decisions where success will be the only outcome. College success requires persistent motivation, and the responsibility to choose, to work hard. Students are more likely to achieve the motivation required for their academics if they can attribute their successes to internal factors they perceive to have control of. (Learning-Theories Knowledgebase , 2008) A student who worked hard on a paper they received a good grade on is likely to attribute this success to the amount of effort they used. Since effort is an internal factor that many perceive they can control then they will be motivated to duplicate that effort again...
