Times are changing. Technology has continued to influence many changes in how we think and how we interact in our everyday lives and in our workplace. In this fast paced world we live in there is the internet, cell phones and email have become as common as a pen. Everything is accessible at the click of your mouse and multi-million dollar contracts are being processed and negotiated via email, fax, or video conferencing. One can now conduct banking business on-line, set up appointments online. Nowadays, everyone is operating at warp speed and these speeds of work has become a double edged sword because in our fast paced working environments these speeds in which we travel during a work day can produce workplace stress. Stress can come from many different reasons, but it can be broke down into two forms: individual induced stress and physical environment stress. Individual stress includes work overload, responsibility for others, role conflicts. Work overload is self explanatory and is basically the amount of work that is required from an employee on a day to day basis. Responsibility for others is the responsibility that is place on the employee to be responsible for others within the organization. Role conflict occurs when accomplishing one job inhibits or greatly reduced the chance at completing another assigned task. A person who is tasked to do the jobs will incur some type of stress while trying to figure out how to get both tasks accomplished in the given amount of time. Physical environment stress is sometimes thought to be hard labor. Physical environment stress is not confined only to physical labor it also involves other factors such as noise, temperature, lighting, and pollution. (Charlesworth, Nathan 1984) With that said, we can say that people in business and people in construction both have some kind of physical work environment stressors. Stress from noise doesn’t have to be caused from loud sound, it could be the sound of the air conditioner or maybe even the silence of someone who is sitting next to you and you know they are watching what you do. Temperature also adds to the frustration and can also cause stress. As the world gets more diverse, stress in the workforce will continue to rise. It is imperative for managers and leaders to be able to recognize stress, understand its causes, and know how to alleviate it within their organizations so that it can continue to grow and be productive. Stress is part of our everyday life and it can have a motivating effect or a de-motivating effect. Each of us has our own level of how much stimulation or stress we need in our lives to keep us from getting bored. Others however have a much lower tolerance for stress so managers must be able to look at each individual and decide if the individual has a high or low tolerance for stress. Managers can do this only if they have a good understanding of what causes stress and offer your employees ways to deal with stress effectively to promote a stress free or a reduced stressful work environment. (Goldberg, 1978) There is good news about ways managers can reduce stress in the workplace. One important action managers can take is to not place unreasonable expectations on the employees with regards to their ability to accomplish things just because they might have some time available. (CDC, 2011) Managers must teach their employees the power of saying no to requests, especially if the request is beyond their scope of learning capabilities; ability to complete the assigned task within a certain time frame is way above expectations. Once managers review, implement, and show by example, employees stress while at work could be kept to a minimum. The ability to lower levels of stress in the workplace has been shown to improve employee health and quality of life as well as boosting employee morale and production. These are some of the reasons that Employee Assistance programs are used to reduce stress in the workplace by providing services like anger and time management and learning relationship skills. Some even offer marital counseling, since stress at home often spills over the affect job performance that increase stress in the workplace. (Schultz, 2010) I work in health care and there are days in which I feel stressed to the max. I also know when I have reached my maximum stress level and I know when it is time to take a break. I will make sure that I take all vacations that are offered to me and I take the breaks that are offered to me on a daily basis. These breaks, vacations, enable me to receive the proper amount of rest, and it also allows my brain a moment to reboot and this in itself is a benefit in which all companies should envelope. I have worked for twenty-five years and knowing my stress level and knowing when to address my stress level has lowered my stress in general in half. Life is stressful enough without adding your daily work life into the mix. I suggest all employees take advantage of any benefits your company offers and with taking advantage of these you will someday become stress free.

ANN-MARIE ROY Contact: aroy11@caledonian.ac.uk COURSEWORK STRESS STUDY ANN-MARIE ROY ABSTRACT The aim of the present study was to investigate students’ perceived university coursework stress and whether the use of wishful thinking or problem-focused coping was related to anxiety and depression levels. The method of investigation was a four-part questionnaire. Participants were 81 Glasgow Caledonian University students. There were two hypotheses: 1) problem solving copers will score lower on the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale. 2) Those high in perceived coursework stress and who reveal wishful thinking strategies will have higher anxiety and depression scores. A multiple regression revealed partial support for both hypotheses – problem strategies had no relationship to coursework stress but wishful thinking and anxiety were both positive predictors of stress; however, contrary to hypothesis 2 depression revealed a strong negative association with stress. The conclusion from this study is that wishful thinkers are also more likely to be anxious; problem focused copers are not anxious, depressed or stressed; stressed students do not suffer from depression.
