For some people being different from others, is not always an atrocious thing. It could also mean to be capable of doing something someone else would never have done, to have a vision of becoming something that expands beyond your social environment. However, it can absolutely be difficult to accomplish this dream and there is a chance that you can meet different obstacles that you need to conquer. Deliverance could with no doubt be the answer. “Dukwanes Deliverance” illustrate[s] this problem, by [when] the black teenager, Dukwane, sadly loses his ability to walk, while he wishes on attending [for acceptance to] Cambridge University. He has to handle the actuality, that he is black skin colored [= colored], and lives in a country where most of the population are [is] white and despite that [on top of that/in addition to that], he is paralyzed as well. The main theme in this story are [is] mirrored in this battle with difficulties, and grants you the point, that you never should quit the [your] dreams of you.

The lead [main] character, Dukwane, is a black colored [black or colored] teenager who lives in Camden, London with his mother and father. His family are what you could call poor because they are not specifically wealthy, which Dukwane[‘]s job indicates. Dukewane works six shifts a week in a not so elegant fastfood restaurant [-] could perhaps be MCD [well, in the story it is called Holy Fried Chicken]. Another plausible indication of the poorness [poverty] in his family could be the fact that his father does nothing with his life, “As he looked at his father sat there, his bottom shirt bottom open and exposing his belly overhanging his trousers, he felt a sense of sadness, but also a determination to be more” (p 8, ll 25-27). His father who sits and watching television all day, scares Dukewane from becoming nothing, his father is what you could say, a [call a demotivation] unmotivation for Dukewane to become something. This ambition that Dukewane have [has], is what you could say [call] a characteristic thing about him, he doesn’t want to be the same thing as his father. Thus, you could say that Dukwane is nothing like the persons in his social environment, for instance, his father. Dukwane is a smart teenager who fears sitting on his ass all day and do[ing] nothing, for that reason he is going to attend Cambridge University, which is an abnormal decision in his social environment. Dukwane’s friend named “Jermaine”, questions Dukwane’s decision. “Well, they are all loaded, and white, I heard you get the cane from your teachers if you don’t do your work. And the older guys are gay and make the younger ones do weird shit” (p 9, ll 61-62). Jermaine tries to freighting [frighten] Dukwane from attending the Cambridge University, [and] he doesn’t like the fact that Dukwane is going to attend to Cambridge University. However Dukwane is determined to attend Cambridge university and later on in his life become a politician just like Barak Obama, who’s [who is] his big idol. Dukwane is in addition a very courageous teenager, who wants make his dreams come true. But despite of being different from his from his friends and family, he is as well a part of the social environment. “Melones hugos! Nice,” (p 9, l 48) said Dukwane in what he imagined was a Spanish accent. “That’s all you think about.” (p 9, l 49) His use of colloquial language indicates that he can act as his friends in his social environment when he spot[s] the chance.

The story are being told with [through] a third person narrator, who has a limited omniscient point of view. The omniscient point of view gives the reader the ability to see events and other characters from Dukwane’s point of view. “He hears the sound after he feels it. Almost like the release of air, his body no longer in his control, falling to the pavement again. He feels the blood but cannot lift his head to see it. All he can see is the blur of neon fading” (p 10, ll 83-85). Here in this quote we see the events from Dukwane’s point of view.

Dukwane lives, as I have said before, in a less wealthy environment, and there are different evidence, that can tell about this environment which Dukwane lives in. The social setting is mostly expressed with social and class-markers and the vernacular language, which Dukwane and his friends uses sometimes. First of all there is the not so elegant restaurant, where the customers aren’t taken that seriously by Dukewane and his friend. “Pretty much. Except when I’m thinking about ass. You should try it. £2.99, boss” (p 9, l 50), here Jermaine is replying to Dukwane, but in the last sentence he replies to a costumer. When you are at work its abnormal not to focus [on] the costumer [customer] or the costumer maybe give the restaurant a bad review because of the bad service. His action and language is a sign that they are a part of the lower social class, where people stop caring about manners anymore. Another class marker is the hospital Dukwane was in. “Dukwane turned on the TV console above his bed. £3.50 per day to watch the BBC” (p 11, l 137), Usually people does not pay money to watch TV at a hospital, this could be a sign that it’s not a marve[l]lous hospital.
In addition, you can say that the environment in Camden is multicultural. “You know the Bengalis my cousin Frank hangs out with?” (p 11, ll 128-129) The fact that the protagonist himself is black, and that there are people from all the way from Bangladesh is a sign that the area that Dukwane lives in is multicultural. An interesting information that we are being given is that the setting also reflects Dukwane[‘]s mood and the atmosphere around him. “As he stepped out onto Yorks Way, the sun was setting over Kings Cross in the distance, a crimson candyfloss sky broken by a dozen cranes all busy building his city.” (p 9, ll 34-36) This is a symbol which tells [us] that Dukwane is thrilled that he attends Cambridge University and the stunning sunset and candyfloss skies creates an atmosphere that tells that Dukwane is happy. Actually, there seems to be a contrast between the metallic machines and the candyfloss skies, which tells the difference between the mysterious quixotic sky and the rough capability and power of the cranes. The setting shows the difference between what Dukwane already has, and what he pursuit [pursues], from the less wealthy environment to the well-heeled city of London.

The theme of the short story is probably that you shouldn’t give up on your dreams, despite the obstacles that can occur on your way to achieving them, just like many athletes/successful persons would say. For an example Dukwanes imaginary Barack Obama tells him, while Dukwane is on morphine, “You are going to do what you always wanted to do. Do you hear”, “By your wits and sheer persistence. This is what makes us rise above other men, it is how we face adversity; how we challenge those who hold us back, how we make real our dream”. This has to back up my theory about the theme.

Så mit råd til dig, Christian, er at se rettelserne igennem og så i øvrigt se at få luget dem helt ud. Du ville ikke være langt borte fra en topkarakter, hvis du ikke begik sproglige fejl.
