...here in 2014 and college students still don't feel the need they should vote. Students don't realize how important their vote would be if they voted. This generation fails to realize the impact they would have on the world if they would take the time out to cast a ballot. College students should vote because we have the right to do so, our vote matters, and we should have input in our future. College students should vote because we have the right to do so. The importance of our future lies within voting. We should use this right to our full advantage. Not using this right shows disrespect to those who fought for us to have the right to vote. Without this right, college students wouldn't be where they are today. Another reason why college students should vote is because our vote matters. Politicians focus on college student numbers when we request any concern. If a low ratio of students cast a ballot , the lower the feedback will be for that concern. Politicians also focus on college student voting statistics because we are the ones who will be living amongst the changes that will be put in place. The voting age was lowered for a reason. That reason is to give the younger generations a chance for their voice to be heard. Last, but not least college students should vote because we should have input in our future. No one wants a future someone else has planned for them. To vote is to voice your opinion. Voicing your opinion will lead to the type of future you want. If a great number...

...America: Dumbing Down Our Students Back in the day, school was a place to learn. It was a place to get smart. Now it has turned into a psychological headquarters. It is like America is saying, “Who cares, as long as our students feel good about themselves.” Schools have stopped teaching important facts. Some teachers do not feel their students need to know what was taught back in the day. According to Charles J. Sykes, “In a 1990 survey of college seniors, 42 percent couldn’t name the dates of the War Between the States within half a century” ( Sykes, 4). Why don’t our teachers care anymore about teaching about important events or even science? Many of them have said it is because they just are not useful facts. I would have to disagree. I believe that you should know the background of this country you live in. I think students need to be taught about our founding fathers. I fear for our future generations. The school systems are dumbing our students down and they are too worried about how the students are feeling than what they are learning. So the question we are all asking teachers along with the school system is, “Why are we allowing students to be dumbed down?” How are we going to elect a president in the future who never had a background in math, science, or most importantly, history? Our future generation does not know what we were taught when we were in school. Some public schools have even removed certain subjects because they are not necessary or the school cannot...

...U.S. Education Today & Tomorrow This paper reviews four important trends in our educational system today across America and discusses the impact of these trends on our future educational system. We live in an ever evolving world with constant changes that are affecting every aspect of our lives daily. Our educational system has not been immune to these changes and shouldn’t be since these changes and our ability to adapt to these changes will determine our future academic success and our place in a global society. Trend 1: Diverse & Older Population America has always been a melting pot of diversity, but current statistics show that in the near future minorities will become the majority percentage of the population (Pearson, 2010). Immigration, legal and illegal, have been substantial for a long time now and is changing the needs that educational systems have to address. For example, the need for qualified and minority teachers who can teach English as a second language will and does continue to grow (Pearson, 2010). Educators will have to adapt to this also by being more sensitive to various cultures and perhaps re-evaluate the current curriculum to promote multicultural literacy. Furthermore, the number of people that will retire will be doubled by the year 2050 and there will be fewer people of working age paying into the tax system that helps support education and elder services (Pearson, 2010). Because of this, financial constraints most...

...This document contains the policies and action taken in response to the recent rioting of various student groups on campus after a recent decision made for the allocation of funds for the King-Chavez lecture series. This document contains immediate and future plans for the University. At Pilgreen University, we understand that the issue at hand may cause problems no matter what the decision, because ultimately not everyone can be satisfied. However, PU does strive to make the University a place where as much equality exists as possible, and therefore will try to make the best decision possible. Issues At Hand There are several possible issues involved with the problem of the rioters upset over the decision made by the faculty/student committee and their allocation of funds. The issue at hand is that four different groups(a predominantly white religious group, LGBT group, African American group, and Hispanic group- no other groups are mentioned) that represent students on campus are vying for funds to be allocated to them for their specific speaker. Because the LGBT group seemingly presented a better platform for their speaker, they received the majority of the money. The African American and Hispanic groups received less money. The predominantly white religious group was not mentioned as receiving money; however, a white group was mentioned as being at the riot and looking for a reason to loot and vandalize. The issue seems to have the following possibilities as to why...

...Planning for Future Success: The Adelante Program Four years ago, La Casa de Amistad launched the Adelante program. The program was created to increase awareness among local Latino students and their families of the need to complete high school and of the merits and advantages of earning a college degree. “In the past, Latinos have been on the outskirts of the community at large. In part this is due to the difficulties faced by our families when it comes to education, leadership, and proper representation. The Latino Community is now a large part of the diversity tapestry we call Michiana and as such we need to make sure our youth are aware of their future roles and the responsibility that is on their hands. ...Last summer I attended the Summer Science Academy, a competitive internship program at Howard University, with 20 other top academic performing high school minorities. We took academic courses and shadowed doctors at Howard hospital. Flying to Washington D.C., I predicted the students attending this program would be elite students from across the nation. I met with students from varying backgrounds and environments who wanted to pursue a career in the medical field. During the internship, we encountered a dilemma which threatened our education. Our chemistry teacher was an on-call doctor at the hospital who often could not teach our class due to her job . Accordingly, our teacher was replaced by a substitute from the Caribbean who had an accent which made it hard to understand; creating a perplexing learning environment for most of us. As we started to learn organic chemistry, we experienced confusion causing us to start rethinking our futures. To ensure our t nation, didn’t lose at least 20 potential future doctors, a solution had to be found. In light of the foregoing one evening I proposed a solution to my class which they embraced. Every night I would read the day’s material to familiarize myself with organic chemistry. After learning the material, I would teach my peers the lessons in a manner they could understand and remember the content, such as making jokes or creating songs about the functional groups. Every evening after class and shadowing the doctors, I would...

...international students to improve English ability, prepare academically, and connect to campus life. There are many resources, tools, and guidance to help us succeed and get university experience and skills for future career. Today, I will talk about how its curriculum, students and faculty staff, and opportunities help us to fulfill our career dreams. First, for its Curriculum: 1. It’s very intensive, we have average four courses per semester and we only have at most two weeks holiday for Christmas and summer. However, all the curriculum are designed to be helpful for our future jobs. For example, accounting major has the career-focused finance coursework with English language classes. It’s designed to polish our professional speaking and writing skills. I think it’s very beneficial for international students who want to improve their English and wanna find a job in the United States. 3. We only have 20-30 students in one class. I think it’s pretty good for us because compared to my former university in California, we have 200-300 students in one lecture hall, and many students didn’t pay attention for the lecture. Secondly~Students are from different countries, and we are here to study together. It’s very awesome to know different friends from other countries. Also, many of us are in the same course and have the same major. For example, when I went to my first accounting class, my classmates introduced themselves and told that they wanna be an accountant in the future like...

...people and its future development and growth. Higher education considered to be beneficial as it shapes the students future and career and provide them better work and open new opportunities for them to enlighten their future. However, in my views, it is not enough to get higher education, we also need to ensure that we are learning to make our future bright and to lead productive lives. It is important than ever to have a college education as it is related to various factors that contribute success in our life. Many people value higher education for monetary reasons, they believe higher education will allow them to find lucrative careers that have high salaries and many opportunities. Moreover, it also teaches us how to deal with a variety of other real-life situations by improving our problems solving skills and ability to communicate with other people to maintain personal relationships. The other important factor of higher education is that it helps us to interact better in a group which may benefit our career later on as it is an essential aspect of any type of work environment. It is my belief that the primary purpose of higher education is and should be the creation of prepared minds. The investment of government in higher education including research labs and May results in the creation of new products and services but definitely results in the production of highly prepared workers needed by industries. Thus the preparation of the mind of these students becomes even more...

...Student activism is work by students to cause political, environmental, economic, or social change. Although often focused on schools, curriculum, and educational funding, student groups have influenced greater political events. | There are conflicting views regarding students' participation in politics. It has been a very controversial subject. Two contrasting opinion is have been expressed by the two groups of people. There are people who always want to keep students very far from the politics. There are others who hold opposite view. They think that students ought to be well versed in politics because they are the future leaders of the country. There has been much discussion whether students should join politics or not. Some persons say that they should join and some say that they should not. We should first discuss the subject very reasonably. Then we can decide whether students should join politics or not: Before southern parts of Asia had been free from the bondage of the British rule, some politicians said that school students also should join the struggle for freedom. During the days of Non-co-operation movement, students were advised to give up studies and join the fight for freedom. Their argument was—"Everything is useless without freedom. Education can wait but freedom cannot. Everything will be set right as soon as we get freedom. If school students join the political movement, it will gain additional strength. Now, we have no longer to fight against the British...

Public schools have organized the material to fit everyone into one program similar to an assembly line, prioritized quantity over quality. For instance, public schools progress students at a fixed rate regardless of whether or not the material was mastered. This is equivalent to building a house on a fragile and shaky foundation.
